Hello guys.

Very new with this android tv box.

Moving to a new house, just brought 4K UHD Smart TV. I'm a 9-5 worker, thus not a heavy TV watcher. Not a gamer either.

Now considering buying an android tv box, so i can avoid subscribe to Astro. Will subscribe with Unifi later.

My options:

1) Xiaomi Mi Box 3S
2) Minix Neo U9-H
3) A5X Max+

I read the thread and comment's for several pro and cons. Considering to buy A5X Max+, but hard to find a review for it. Moreover, most review say that i need more than 10mbps of wifi for smooth viewing.

Any advise is appreciate.
*
10mbps for Full HD only. 4K recommended 25mbps.

In actual play for example in Netflix. Full HD often around 5mbps to 7mbps and for 4K often around in 15mbps.

So if you want stream in 4k. Get Unifi 30mbps package or DiGi Infinite 150.

Except the 4k quality is way below if you play from TV. If you are not in 4K video, this xiaomi box is good, I use it for AOTG.
*
What wrong with Xiaomi 4K video quality?

I don't have single issue playback 4K content from Netflix and YouTube and it play as nice as my Panasonic TV apps.

How about other player like mx-player and etc?

Which one do you feel is the best to use?
*
For streaming, the best is Video Player (XPlayer). Very smooth streaming experience.

The worst actually is MX Player Pro. Not really smooth streaming and some HW+ support issue on certain channel, for example BBC 2.

I searched for related key words that makes sense to me, like nat geo people, nat geo, etc. can't seem to find an answer/solution for me. Hence me posting this.
I have liveNet TV. It has a few pre-recorded documentaries, but not quite a lot. Don't seem to have Nat Geo People programmes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nat_Geo_People#Programmes)
Don't mind me asking, does RedBox and CHDV have those programmes? If not, I won't bother installing those apps. I found some on youtube but not a lot. Also, youtube is not as nice to use compared to tv show apps  smile.gif
Thanks for all the replies  smile.gif

CHDV have NatGeo People. Channel 491.

QUOTE(GuyM @ Apr 13 2018, 11:02 PM)
So I bought another box as mentioned last week. It's the Mecool M8S Pro L 3gb/32gb S912 with Android OS that came with the optional voice remote. To those intending the same, get the voice remote, it's worth it!

I must say is a very fast box with a refreshing UI. Installing apps was a breeze and faster compared to the last S912 box which I sold off.

There's plenty of video review available. Some apps I'd need to sideload but didn't encounter any problem

The usually Kodi, Terrarium, FreeFlix all installed smoothly. YouTube and Netflix plays in 4K.

As I just got the box this evening, will try to install other apps and try out.

So far I'm very impressed it and looks like it's gonna be the primary box replacing the Q16 Quad I've had for years.

Wife and kids love it so much especially the solid build voice remote
*

I Google around and all mentioned Netflix only in HD not 4K.

Can you confirm Netflix is in 4K? Easier way to check - you will found 4K title category (mostly is TV series) and those 4K title will mentioned 4K in below title and above the description when you open the TV series. If you can't find any title with 4K description then your TV box is not playback the title in 4K. 4K title will label as HD if the box only up to HD.

Guys, need some recommendations. I'm looking for an android box for my mom's house. Plan to use astro on the go & unifi app mainly.
Don't need a high-end box, something simple & reliable will do.

Would Mi Box (with Android TV) be a good fit or maybe an Amazon Fire TV stick?

I had a Minix U1 previously (already sold) that didn't work very well with the Astro app but I didn't really use it for that purpose so never bothered much about it. Would getting another Minix U1 be a good idea?
*
I am using Mi Box and both apps is inside. So far so good just need a mouse for navigation as both apps is not design for Android TV OS.

Mi Box is pure Android TV OS box.

Do you have to do workarounds or do the apps just work?
You mean airmouse or normal mouse?
*
Both need to side load the apps. Also need install orientation apps and set auto run else the Astro GO will be on portrait mode.

Make sure your Mi Box is original Malaysia or International edition and not China edition as I seen people comment Astro GO not working on alter root device. Root could make paid service apps not working.

Also need a device can act as mouse, you can use wireless mouse, air mouse, gamepad and etc.

I post before my apps in mi box https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...post&p=88306377

Thanks, will consider the Mi Box as well as the Minix U1. Any good air mouse to recommend? I have only used the Minix A2 Lite before.

I not sure for air mouse. I only use game pad set as mouse mode. Not a good way to use but it is working and I seldom use also.

HyppTV Modded

AOTG Modded

You mean instead of using the official astro & hypptv app we use the modded versions? Does it work well?

QUOTE(fruitie @ Apr 24 2018, 10:48 AM)
Sounds good, will try this weekend with my another box when I'm back in hometown. biggrin.gif
*

Done test this Astro GO mod edition and it is an older version with no benefit of using it.

This mod edition playback all channel in a very very very low quality output.

Done revert back to official version which playback in high quality HD output. This Mod edition is unnecessary.

HyppoTV is older version which now replace with playtv@unifi. This mod version just load forever and won't play.

Ya dimsum very care and listen to customer. I comment at play store mentioned their cast to TV not working in proper and prefer Android TV support.

Dimsum later reply and mentioned Android tv is support just in their next release. Maybe coicident but very cool! smile.gif

Probably a coincidence that it's due for release soon. But at least they responded nicely and unlike TM. TM will tell you that your device is the problem  laugh.gif  Hopefully, this service can be sufficient for those who want simple fuss free Asian content. Similarly to how Netflix is king in its category.
*
Yup at least it reply nicely. The quality of dimsum is good not like Rakuten which is too low bitrate until image often pixelate and not smooth especially in fast action scenes. Rakuten really should re-decide their video output stream quality.
