i got an offer for a galax 1080 ti exoc for 3.1k new... worth it? it doesnt seem like a high end 1080 ti but the good ones are like 4k range

Rumor has it probably sometime April if during GTC or in June during Computex. But the more interesting rumor is that Nvidia launching 2 types of GPU, Ampere and Turing. One locked for gaming and the other or mining. Anyway, all these are just rumors. But a few articles I read did give some credence to this, as Nvidia is concerned that miners hogging up gaming GPUs will kill the PC gaming market and drive gamers to consoles. I do hope its true. Some article said the GTX2070 probably has GTX 1080 Ti performance, then GTX 2080 and GTX 2080 Ti will be even faster.

based on previous trend, the 80 Ti variants are always similar performance to the next gen 70 series, like 980 Ti vs 1070. I'm also guessing the next xx70 will be as fast as a 1080 Ti. bout the ampere and turing, gamers nexus has suggested that ampere might not be the next gaming gpu but his insider info had suggested it's probably gonna be turing.

also since RAM prices have increased, we'll definitely be seeing higher MSRP than before so RIP prices even before miners get a hold of them

The next gen rumored to use GDDR6. At least its not as expensive as HBM2. But sure hope that the GPU being locked on hardware level to either gaming or mining is true, as this will help stabilize price. At least miners can hogged the gaming GPUs and drive the price up.

From a sales POV, hardware locking the cards will only reduce their profits since based on previous 'mining cards' they perform similar to regular cards and have shorter warranty period. good news for gamers, bad news for Nvidia who's investor's interest is mainly more profits than caring about the gaming community

Cannot really compare Maxwell -> Pascal generation to Pascal -> Ampere. Process node is almost 50% smaller with the former and only a mere 25% smaller for the latter. 2070/1170 might only be a little faster than regular 1080 but might not be as fast as 1080 Ti.

it's the same for the 780 ti performing similar to a gtx 970 but yea that's the thing, we're already approaching physical limitations. kinda interested to see how they'll keep up with the trend

Actually, during early Maxwell years, it was the 980 that performs similar to 780 Ti. With newer games however, definitely 970 can already compete with 780 Ti due to Kepler no longer being optimized.

They can still push the size of the GPU now since GTX 1080 die is significantly smaller than RX Vega die (314mm2 vs 486mm2)

latest news says that Ampere will be a refreshed Pascal, while a new architecture that succeeds Volta will likely be announced in GTC 2018, possibly Turing

Sounds good, realistically though availability even if the miners aren't snapping up cards, will only be Q3 or even Q4 of 2018. Most people won't be buying the more expensive founders edition cards and will wait for custom designs with better cooling.

I have to admit that even with my HTC Vive I'm barely pushing the limits of my EVGA 1070 that's almost 1.5 years old already so I won't be waiting to upgrade anytime soon
