one doesn't have to be an english teacher to be good in the language.......

i have been tested before for migration purposes (not ielts)......and have been certified 'native speaker' of the language.......

Seriously, why are you being so judgmental? Does correcting people or bashing others gives you the sense of superiority? hmm.gif

This is, a thread meant for medical students after all, not a thread for you to correct people's grammar and judge the eligibility of one to enter medical course. Therefore, your previous posts are considered as off-topic no?

Mind you, i never said you are good in English, i just said you are acting like an English teacher going around and correcting people. Pls bear in mind that one doesn't have to be good at something to be a teacher in Malaysia.  rolleyes.gif So pls dun flatter yourself  sweat.gif

don't blow a fuse........it was a response to the muet high band 5 result.........you don't like the comments, just ignore them, they are not meant for you anyway........ rolleyes.gif

No I'm waiting for STPM result..... I said that the essay is done in lower 6 which is my first essay after SPM which explain why the essay is that that good. The reason I got high Band 5 is that my 'Comprehension ' test is almost perfect. Comprehension have 60% of the mark I think.

Anyway, does this mean my chance of passing IELTS is none? Who have do I need to go to IMU?
*
ielts tests 4 components of the english language, ie speaking, listening, writing and reading.......and you will be graded for each component, and then an averaged final band........band 1 is the lowest, and band 9 the highest.......and there are 2 types of tests, academic, and general purpose........you will need academic.......

there is NO 'pass' or 'fail'........you get a standardised assessment of you proficiency, and accorded a band accordingly.......

the 'pass' band is decided by the bodies that require the results.......eg, most oz unis needs band 6 for most non-language intensive courses, band 7 for medicine or laws......

imu needs band 6.5 at the moment, with no component below 6, and band 7 for the pms stream, before entering the matching exercise......but will need a band 7 for all students from 2010.........that is consistent with most unis in oz and uk........they need band 7 for medical studies.......

based on you essays, and you posting here, i predict you will get an overall band of 5-6, at current level of competency........you will need some work to correct the rather systematic errors in sentence structure i notice.......

you can call me judgmental like some people, or you can think for yourself whether there is merit in what i say, and take the necessary actions........ultimate, it's your own life..........and your own ielts result smile.gif

p/s........as a reference point, below is the blog of a malay mara scholar currently studying in auckland......that would be band 8.5, which is what i believe he got.......(they almost never give band 9)

let's not forget there is a difference between social and verbal communication, which can be any language (eg history taking can be wholly in bm)......and medical and technical communication, which is still very much in english (although often is done in bm in some gov hospitals)......and educational communication, especially internationally, which is wholly in english.......

a good command of english is thus a prerequisite for being a doctor........and this is explicitly required in all top med schools.........

it is VERY painful to listen to some local presenters at conferences........all medical conferences in msia and internationally, use english........whether you like it or not.......

hmm i wonder if i can twin off without doing my muet, no admin has demanded my muet results yet though.

do you guys thin there will be too many doctors in malaysia as reported on medicine.com.my?
*
in the pms stream, you are not graduating, so i suspect there will be no issue about not having muet........it's a lan requirement for graduating locally only......

there will be a surplus of doctors graduating from probably 2014 or 2015 onwards, compared to existing number of posts available in the gov service........but i think that will easily be rectified by increasing the number of posts......note that all newly graduated msia doctors will need to work 3 years compulsory with the gov (in addition to 2 years housemanship).......so they will have to employ you.......but they may scrap that rule come the time when there is surplus........

when that happens, then employment is not guaranteed, and selection for employment will follow market forces........ie, where the degree is from, competency, language skills, etc, just like any new engineer, accountant, any graduate etc will face.........and the spectre of unemployed doctors, just like the 80,000 unemployed graduates.......

that is what happens when you mass produce doctors, with no regard for needs, and quality......

something not consistent here........you said earlier you are waiting for your stpm results now.......and now you say you can only apply to imu in mid 2011........ hmm.gif

One funny stories I encouter is in Jusco, where the cashier in bakery who can't understand a Pakistani speaking English to him saying 'Is this sweet and sour' ,the young cashier probably a SPM grads nervously said 'No discount for this'. I pity the Pakistani who repeating the same question many time.
*
i think it is quite clear there is a problem with consistency here.......

he's a singaporean, so he needs to complete  2 yrs of National service before Uni/medskol, get it?
*
ah.........that explains it........ biggrin.gif

one question......if a singaporean is resident overseas, and remains there, does he necessarily need to return to serve out the 2 years national service? Or can he finish up his studies elsewhere and either get exemption, or perform the ns when he graduates and return?

visualize, every male singaporean, and pr as well, is required by law to perform 2 years of armed forces national service.........this is the real thing, not the 3 months summer camp of msia's ns........

Yep, I actually get an 'offer' from one of my father's friend who can help me in such situation. But I decided it's too late since I have too many offer rejected when I'm a Singaporean here like not be able to get into MRSM when I was Primary 6 and Sec 3 since I'm not M'sian and a course when I apply after SPM. My father just told me live in Europe after somewhile.

Anyway, the are many generic drug currently available Do you think its
its quality differ slightly from original-type drug?
*
so you didn't because you thought it was too late.......?

not because it is morally wrong?........

okay..........

Okay guys, im really interested in learning medicine.
Im right now 15. Going over to the UK to do my GCSE which is this September most probably.
What should I do to get ready. What should I read to improve my knowledge on medicine.
So when I go to UNI, I will be ready and everything will be easy thx!
*
that means you are aiming for direct entry into uk med schools, which is quite labourious.......

entry is based on 4 parts.......sitting for an exam (which one depends on the intended school), writing a personal statement, and attending an interview.....this is all usually completed 9-12 months before the start of uni (therefore before you A2 exam even)........and then if they think you are potential material, they will make you an offer, with a cut off A2 result........usually AAA, maybe AAB or ABB if they REALLY like you......

showing interest in healthcare activities is important, so many people volunteer in their local hospitals for jobs like 'tea lady', mobile library boy (yes! someone coming with a trolley of books to lend to patients to read!) etc......

depending on where you study, you school may/will also help you with details on what you need to do, how to write the personal statement, etc........

it is not necessary to read medical books, but there are several books around on how to write a good personal statement, how to score in ukcat, bmat etc!

most uni needs chemistry......the others are optional, and you only need 3 principal subjects........a good combination would be chemistry, maths and bio or physics.......make sure you do the hard subjects and avoid soft subjects........

you may want to browse through this: http://www.ukcat.ac.uk/

most uni wants ukcat.........cambridge, ucl, oxford and imperial want something called bmat instead........

they are compulsory.......no test, not considered.....it is VERY competitive there for medicine....they go to great lengths to make sure they select the BEST candidates....this contrasts greatly with the situation in msia.......

at this point, it is unrealistic to want to be 'a ENT Specialist', or any specialty......just aim to be a doctor first.....

postgraduate training is another set of issues, especially for a foreigner in uk......don't think about this now.......premature......

Added on February 24, 2009, 12:12 amgoing through you other thread on photography, i think you can afford it........consider concord college, they prepare people well for entry into critical courses, and into ivy league (oxbridge)........

Are most of you taking BMAT?
So after my A-Levels , I should do the BMAT Test?

Umm, any tips for a 15 year old which is keen in medicine. I wanna start early. Starting my GCSE this September.
*
you do your bmat AND ukcat in the first year of your a levels, application process to med school starts 1 year before entry, soon after your as exams.......don't worry, if you are doing a levels there, the school/teachers will tell you what to to....there will be many classmates who will be doing the same thing......

i would advise to forget about this till you are in the a levels itself.....

Some university wanted BMAT. Others may want UKCAT. So first decide which university you wanted to apply to and then take the appropriate test.

only 4 med schools use bmat (oxford, cambridge, ucl, imperial)

the rest want ukcat......

the study attributes 60% of the variation to the difference in the required entrance qualifications of different med schools.......

if these variations are as such in uk, where there is a relatively small band in terms of the required entrance qualifications, imagine what the variation will be like in msia, where the entrance qualifications varies VERY widely, and stretching down to admitting very poor quality students.......

i shudder to imagine.......
