QUOTE(wj91 @ Jan 30 2024, 04:59 PM)
Hello all the Sifus, I am seeking recommendations for one or two new credit cards that that offer improved cashback or miles options, aligning with my family's current spending patterns. Here are my criteria:

Annual Income: Approximately RM150K (Husband only)

Mandatory Free Lifetime Annual Fee: Must be free or waivable by meeting requirements (or contact Customer Service)

Required for:
a. Weekday expenditures
b. Utility bills – RM150
c. Family insurance - Approximately RM1.5k monthly

Current credit cards:
a. Maybank 2 Cards Platinum – Utilizing AMEX for weekend petrol, dining, and shopping. Usually achieving the RM50 cashback with a monthly spend of around RM1k.
b. Alliance Visa Infinite – Topping up RM3k for E-wallets (TNG 1k, Boost 1k, Shopeepay 1k) for daily retail spending (meals, KKmart, 99 peedmart, tolls, etc.) and online shopping. The RM1k Shopeepay top-up is directed towards the SSPN fund for my child.
c. Aeon Platinum Visa – Topping up RM12.5k to Grabpay for grabfood, jayagrocer, grabcar, etc., to get RM25 cashback, utilizing this card for Aeon store purchases.

Additionally, given my monthly spending total of RM3.5k on Housing Loan repayment, Hire purchase, and PTPTN repayment, having credit cards applicable to these categories would be advantageous for me.
*
Public bank islamic MasterCard 4% cashback for grocery. Public bank visa signature for contactless purchase at 3% Cash Back on Grocery, Dining and Online Transaction with minimum RM100 per transaction, capped at RM30 per monthly statement cycle

Use Lazada for utilities if qualified. Maybank amex ikhwan. If not use tng to pay tnb.

Insurance can try affin duo. But you can get only max RM30 for anything below RM3k. Once above 3k, it's RM50

QUOTE(shdin271 @ Jan 30 2024, 10:45 PM)
1. Annual Income: RM60K to RM100K

2. Free Lifetime Annual Fee: A Must

3. Card required for: cashback, petrol, tng ewallet

4. Existing credit cards (if any): maybank petronas ikhwan & grab

5. Interested in CC from: any

6. Others: wanted to cancel my grab card since points are not worth it. i will be spending approx 60k (appliances online/brick & mortar shops & ikea furniture) to move in new home, might as well get a cc to reap most benefits for that (cash back or points that convert)

Affin Duo Plus has PayWave 3% cashback (lowest tier). Is it good or there are higher % of cashback (not a bit spender. RM1.5k monthly)
*
Better you sign up for public bank visa signature if you can. I think they are better value than affin.

Must be credit card? Why not just use Wise's debit card? They are focused on foreign exchange rate after all. I think stan chart had a debit card for that purpose as well. No CC in Malaysia (that I know of) focuses on good exchange rate, because they always add on a charge to every transaction.
*
Wise exchange sucks. I want better than wise. Last time was good. Now sucks.

QUOTE(qu3vax @ Feb 9 2024, 12:33 AM)
as far as i know, usually foreign transaction = visa/master exchange rate(1%) + bank charges(1% or above)

maybe u should look for zero bank charges like ocbc voyage card or cimb twe card. at least saved 1% but conversion rate is by visa/master which i am not sure about the exchange rate.
sometime campaign works better even though some might charged 2-3% , like currently uob has up to 8% cashback foreign transaction max capped rm300 which mean approx rm4xxx swipe amount+ pointsssss worth few % for miles.
*
Thanks. Too poor for both of them. Haha

1. Annual Income: RM120k

2. Free Lifetime Annual Fee: free lifetime or waive 12x/year

3. Card required for:
(i) purely cashback for petrol but general, not limited to one petrol company. Cashback Sundays -Thusday something like Maybank ikhwan gold 5% cashback without conditions.

Reason for asking Maybank amex seems like not acceptable anymore at petron at my area and petron is the nearest options.

(ii) Cashback for grocery. Giant no longer accept amex.

4. Existing credit cards (if any):
Maybank ikhwan gold
Maybank 2 gold
Maybank ikhwan amex
Public bank visa-i platinum
Public bank MasterCard-i platinum
Affin duo

5. Interested in CC from:

Thanks for redirecting, but to respond to your question, isn't the purpose of having credit card ( for most people ) is to only use it for emergencies purposes, rather than a daily usage of the card to purchase necessities and food ?
*
Wrong. You use it in place of cash to get cashback or air miles. But make sure you have sufficient amount inside the bank to pay for it.

Eg
Let us say every week you pump petrol RM100. If you use cash you earn noyhing. You use card can get like RM5 back. It's still expenses that you are going to fork out.

1. Annual Income: RM 30K

2. Free Lifetime Annual Fee: A MUST, no annual charges of any kind, free for life ( Top Priority )

3. Card required for: Food / Petrol / Groceries / Mobile & Internet

4. Existing credit cards (if any): NIL

6. Others: The reason for getting my first credit card is mainly to keep / maintain a good credit score, so I can have higher chance of getting future loans approval, that is my first and most important priority, the others is second.

P/S - Is this suitable for me ? As it seems to tick all my boxes Credit Card

Hi, able to explain why don't bother with CIMB , are they not good ?

As for the above 2 cards, Maybank doesn't really tick my boxes, as I pump petrol almost every 2-3 days. As for Affin, it's not free for life in terms of annual charges.
*
Need to spend RM2,999 then only can get 2% cashback vs spend say RM100 and get 5% cashback with Maybank ikhwan or 3% with affin duo visa.

Doesn't seem wise. Your money. Up to you how you want to maximise your money worth.

Change your lifestyle. Die die must pump every 2-3 days? Reschedule your refuelling to Friday and Saturday.

Affin bank waive with 12 swipes a year. Can use it to pay Tnb, telephone bill, buy stuff from Lazada or shopped. You swipe RM1.00 also counted as 1 swipe. Don't tell me you cannot swipe 12x/year?

Oh thanks a lot buddy, I didn't pay enough close attention to the CIMB's cashback, yes indeed need to spend RM 3k in order to be eligible for cashback.

I would consider the Maybank one that you mentioned, but according to their policy PDF file, it says just need to spend minimum RM 20 to be eligible for cashback every month ?
*
Come on la. Your petrol and groceries don't tell me cannot come up RM20/month?

If cannot reach RM20/month, I want to learn your secret.

No no, don't get me wrong. I just want to know what's the minimum amount to spend to be eligible for the cashback for the Maybank credit card, of course my minimum spending per month would be way more than that.
*
There is no minimum spend. I didn't even know about the Rm20 until you brought it up.

Thanks, looks like the method of usage for maximum Cash Back will be:

1. Groceries and Petrol on Fridays and Saturday only - Maybank Islamic Ikhwan Mastercard Gold Card-i

2. Everything else - AFFIN DUO Visa Cash Back

A couple questions:

1. Is there a list of approved groceries stores? Do convenience stores (KK, 99, 711, Family Mart) and bakeries (RT, TK, etc) count?

2. Will I be charged RM25 SST if I don't activate the AFFIN DUO Mastercard? And should I just cancel it as soon as I get it? as I'll only be using the VISA
*
So far tested 99speedmart counted as groceries under Maybank ikhwan gold.

Some said will be charged. I haven't been charged yet. I haven't activate my MasterCard at all.

Enjoy it while it last.
