Hehe.. yeah the place is nice... it's at Tg malim in perak. FYI, Tg Malim is situated on the Selangor-Perak border line. My parents stayed there since the past 5 years already... tongue.gif

This is my first entry taken from my Penang trip during CNY recently. This is the Fort Cornwallis which is situated at Padang Kota Lama near the jetty. Some restoration works has been done to the site, and some addition to the gallery as well. More entries to come in this Penang Trip set...

This picture was taken at a jetty near Kg Nelayan, Teluk Bahang, Penang on a fine afternoon, last month. Me and my friends were doing a round-island trip that day, and stop by this village to check out if there is anything interesting to see...

This age-old wooden jetty leading up to the boats reminds me of the good old days when I used to live in Penang. When there were times that we took everything for granted, staying in the bustling city of KL really teaches me to appreciate the peaceful environment around you. Nowadays, this kind of view doesn't come by chance, YOU HAVE TO FIND THEM. Save the environment...

hmmm, to make it sharper, use a smaller aperture smile.gif something like f8 to f16 smile.gif but like that you need to use a tripod though biggrin.gif a low iso will make your pic looks squeeky clean happy.gif

Me? Well, because when the catwalk started, I were still on the 5th floor. So, when reach there, i think its better to take some landscape view of the environment that day, before going down there...

Anyway, these are some of my shots when I was cramping with the others...

Because i don't have an external flash, and the light here were very dark, i set my setting to ISO 1600 at 1/60 to prevent noticeable blur. What ur take on this ac98? Is that the best solution in such condition?

Please comment on the technical aspects of this series, on how to improve in such lowlight (i think it was lowlight) condition, without external flash... thanks...

the most difficult part (not so difficult) is to manual focusing on the droplets. use shutter priority for various effects, and make use the built-in flash as it helps 'freeze' the water and add a little bit of impact.. biggrin.gif

It was a pretty busy weekend for me, with other activities other than photography. But since weekends are the only time that allows me to get into photography, I had to find the time for an outing, even if it is a short one.

So, today I spent about 1 hours or so driving down to Taman Orkid in KL for a short photography session by myself. The objective was Extreme Close-Up, but I don't think this series achieved that. Instead, I named it 'Flower Power'.. Enjoy and leave some comments if you have one.. thumbup.gif

This is the latest series that I wanted to share with you guys. Went to Bangkok last week for work purpose, but in the free time, I walk around the city to feel what the city life is all about, especially after the recent political turmoil and the Bangkok Bombings. I can't say much about it as I spent just 6 days over there, but one thing is definite, the city is going through the process of transition from the Old Bangkok to the New Bangkok. The Rich are getting richer, and the Poor are getting poorer, as the Rich can't wait for the Poor to catch up anymore..

All captions for each picture will be included later when I have the right mind to write...

yes, very true... But I think the streets over there is much safer now compared to ours Pudu, or Central Market area. I did not see any youth hanging around the pavement looking at pedestrians like they want to rob you... I believe it is because the government is under the Military control, so ppl tend to fear a bit when thinking of doing petty crime..

Yeah I agree ... it's scary when you dunno what the militants will do to you once you're caught over small matters. There's (almost) no law so they can punch and kick you on the streets and get over with it. Another thing, most law enforcers are heavily armed and I am not talking about mere 6-bullet pistols.

Went to bangkok last july. The crowd there is crazy. All the streets are packed with cars and tuk tuk which is worse than KL streets. Yes, the youths wont be loitering around like our youths here. You can see most of them wearing school clothes or the likes of it walking around at areas like "Ma Bong Kong" aka Sg Wang here. Siam Paragon is like KLCC. All the posh shops open there but it's not that active like KLCC. There's another shopping mall which lies between Siam Paragon and MBK, Discovery Centre; a chiq mall where they have a radio station inside the mall itself and you can see what the DJs are doing since it's only covered with see thru panels.

If you want to travel around Bangkok , the best way to do it is thru their trains. It's kinda funny when the vending machine doesnt accept cash but only coins and they provide a booth at each stop to change coins for you.

If you're staying few days there, it's best to get their monthly passes which is way cheaper than when you buy a ticket each time you want to use their train

I still miss their fish soup noodle tongue.gif

yeah, i did bought the pass, but just daily pass that they're selling for 120baht a day. the siam paragon complex and a few between them are the latest complexes in bangkok. the designs are very nice, but not as happening as our complexes. i think most of the siamese are not up to that standard to be shopping happily around these area.. but i can see starbucks juat about everywhere...

Well, if u want tourist destination surely the grand palace area along the chow phraya river, and the floating market just outside bangkok. in town, u can always walk along the Sukhumvit stretch, or Pat Pong night market where Bangkok nightlife is defined..

Well, any comments on the pictures?? rolleyes.gif

I think in this series i want to focus more on the streets of bangkok and how the 'average' bangkok ppl see their town.. i didn't go and shoot all the famous temples and chow phraya river as i dun hv enough time, and most of those places u can find it in the internet.. This is the streets of bangkok rolleyes.gif

This shot was taken when we're still in Malaysian airspace. Approaching Bangkok, the sky was full of clouds and thunderstorm.. I did not use any special filter, just UV filter. But a bit fortunate because the sun was not on my side, so avoided flare.. And finally, just a little bit of levels adjusting in Photoshop...

Went to AutoFiesta yesterday afternoon. I spent a good 3 hours or so at the place, even though the cars were not that many compared to other major Autoshow. There were a lot of photographers over there, some of them been there just for the girls, biggrin.gif and some of them were for the whole thing. I believe there are few LYN forumers over there also doing their stuffs, as I'd met a few of them..

My primary objective that day was to make full use of my 50mm f1.8, and to capture the details and beauty of those highly sculptured 'piece of art'. I wanted to capture the lines, the curves and the colours of it to make ppl pays more attention to detail rather than just look at the whole car... smile.gif

But since my photobucket is so slow this past 2-3 days, I'll just leave with a single image as an introduction first, and hopefull it'll be done by tonight.. Stay tune.. sad.gif

I like your shots, quite abstract and I couldn't really tell which part of the car is it at first glance.

Oh I was having trouble with photobucket since ages ago and have since given up on it. Using imageshack now. laugh.gif

AutoFiesta 2nd set! The girls.. Apologize for the inconsistent White Balance setting, and crap composition, and blurred pictures.. Not to forget these pictures has gone thru some very heavy cropping (up to 70% i think). Although i don't want to upload this set actually, but since the fiesta is about cars and girls, so it'll not be completed without a peek of those hotties on the stage! These are the 'best' that made it to the gallery.. sweat.gif

The last set of this event. Again, shooting this kind of event/ subject is essential to improve your composition.. When you come to this event, you would want to take pictures different from others, so then u'll start thinking creatively hence you'll think of composition..

All the places that are nice to photograph are all featured in my thread; in KS town there's Bukit Melawati and the Taman Alam. Taman Alam is a bit boring for me coz there're only birds (quite hard to spot, maybe i'm not that observant) and er... plants? Not my cup of tea la, plus with my puny lens what birds can I photograph, lol.

Bukit Melawati is a historical place, all that I can photograph are in my thread already, except Altingburg Fort.

If you wanna go furthur up, you can go Sekinchan for paddy field and Bagan Sekinchan fishing village (which you can get at Pasir Penambang as well).

That's all I think nod.gif

It was always my dream to come back here and record the beauty and the history of this place in still images, to educate the people what this school is all about and why it should be remembered. Established in 1816 by the British, it is the oldest school in South East Asia. Although the present site is not the original site of the school back in 1816, the current site at Jalan Masjid Negeri were installed more than a hundred years ago. This is where I spent 5 glorious years of my life at...

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble but the school is only riding on its past glories. The quality of the education is not as it used to with the number of straight A students dwindling, and losing out to other schools in Penang.

Other than that, nice series on the school. Brings back bittersweet memories.
Er, the toilet still smelly or not, especially the junior's?

thats what i heard too.. the education level has gone down massively after i left the school in 2000, and the headmasters after that also does not know the rich tradition of the place.. and the most annoying thing that has happened is the school badge has become a normal cloth badge instead of the metal badge like in my time there.. very sad to hear of it..

The rest are fine, but i found out pic no 5 (on the nakpins) looks OOF, unless if the main subject is the glass.

Hey man, we know you meant well. Just that if we were to give C&C's, let them be helpful for the photographer so that he can improve his shots in the future. Simply saying that the composition is bad is not very helpful.

bro.. i tink ur creativity is not bad.. coz malay weddings are like that.. its either the hantaran, pelamin, the food, or the couple onli.. we often 4get about the other people who bring the food, the drinks & the kipas holder.. rolleyes.gif think focusing on those things instead.. then it'll be very meningful.. cheers.gif

i believe so, the glass is the main subject in focus, as u can see the sharp plate around that area.. very shallow DOF for this shot..

Yes, thats what i want to show. in fact, i have tons of 'pose shot' or outdoor shots that u normally see, but i dont want to show that here coz it is already common. So, i just filter out some creative shots to put here so u guys can judge wether it is creative or not.. cheers..

i think it's not too bad.
but yeah, trying to hard. i fall into that trap.
the young kid, where u shot him through the circle/ hole in the object ?
yeah,.... maybe less of the 'frame' i find it slightly too much of the frame.

the part where u shot the groom(?).... the objects u shot through too much in the way, if u could work on making those objects less obstructive, i think it'll be fantastic.

I feel the pic#1 should not be senget.

pic#2 good composition, but if can move a bit to the left will be nicer.

pic#3, the head kena cut a bit, it is not a big head portrait, so ithink should include in the full body.

Added on June 23, 2007, 3:02 pmpc #4 and #5 very creative, just that #4 a bit darker on the face...

So less?? Keep posting man! rclxms.gif

One of the difficult thing in photography is making your photo to tell a story. Your shot of 3 person wearing mask looking to the left has just done it pretty well rclxms.gif

no tripod, handheld. i think most of the shots were taken at f11 to f16 ans ISO 100-200. just meter from the sun and recompose the scene..

Maybe it's just me. If it's a product shot, and I happen to be the customer, I would like to see the whole watch in focus. I like the composition of the second photo, however more than 70% of the area was out of focus.

yeah.. it is shallow because the +4 close up filter, and i really focus as close as possible.. i maintain the focal point at the omega wording, so i let the other part blur a bit..

Just a tip. If you notice most of the watch advertisements. They always set the time to 10.10 or 10.08.

So to not obstruct the brand name and also the other words. But nice shots either way.

Would be nice if have a shot of the whole watch

good product shoot. i suggest try using tripod and try using small aperture such as F8 . some said that kit lens are sharp at F8 to avoid shallow DOF.

Firstly, thanks to ac98 for the opportunity given to me to do an outdoor photo shoot with those models, and to the others who were there last Sunday. It was fun and learn a lot about portraiture... (Next time need to apply sunblock before go out shoot tongue.gif )

#1 - Group photo. Didn't include the other girl, but this happens to be the best group shot..

Sorry to say this but those 3 girls dont really qualify as models. sweat.gif
*
The one closest to you in the sharp brought the rest of the 3 girls, she messaged me from Friendster asking for a shoot. The girl in black at the centre is a event freelancer and PC Fair was her last event working for D-Link. The girl at the far end, she's a first timer in photo shoots. Dun worry, there's no need to qualify anyone as models or not, everyone is still practicing.

Imagine if professional models start qualifying PHOTOGRAPHERS based on their shots of them? I think many people will bungkus already laugh.gif

Dont qualify as model? Does portrait photoshoot must involve only model-like?

like diwant said, your comment is harsh indeed.

tq for the comments, appreciate it..

abt the dodging & burning, the basic principle is simple:
1. Burn at the dark/ shadow areas
2. Dodge at the midtone/ highlight areas

It will give a little bit depth to the picture, as the dark areas will be darker, and the highlight areas will be lighter, just as curves/ levels adjustments.. But for B&W, I prefer dodge & burn as u can brush specific area u want to touch- up, unlike cruves/levels adjustments..

Hmmm, the motion blur is due to 'panning' technique that i wanted to achieve in these photos, meaning that I set the settings like that, not by Photoshop or post-processing.. biggrin.gif external flash helps to 'freeze' the car although it was not clean enough...tq

Wow! It has been a long time since i last update my entry.. Puasa, Raya, now Raya-aftermath, haha.. its been a bit outdated, but i hope with this entry, my mood for updating will come back.. enjoy.. most of the catwalk pictures were cropped at the low part due to interference of other photographer's hands, so my mistake..

Taken from my raya vacation in Penang, enjoy this Penang Hill series, but don't expect landscape picture of the island from atop because the weather was not as good as I hoped for, and the scenery is not that nice to be honest..

Hi Diwant, a very average shot I shall say, but I like the 3rd shot though, I like the perspective. I found watermark quite distracting though.

Haven't been here in a loooooooooooooong time.

I echo goldfries' sentiment. My favourite shot is only the 3rd one. The rest are not that special, IMHO.

Whoa, forgive me for criticizing someone more experienced that me unsure.gif

This is a river in Tg Malim, named Ulu Bernam. Located on the border of Selangor - Perak, actually the river is the divider between Selangor & Perak. It is a popular picnic location now, but still not on the mainstream radar. biggrin.gif

My favourites are Pic 1,2 and 3. I think it would look more dreamy if your shutter was longer, which would make the water look even softer.

thanks guys.. i dun have an ND grad or CPL to deepen the highlight, hence i can't slower the shutter anymore than 0.3sec, otherwise, the sky will be overexposed. so i guess thats the slowest i can go in order to balance the expose biggrin.gif

any other technique?

Bro, I also just got back from Kg. Juara, Tioman. But we don't go there using the 4x4 road, we take fisherman boat around 1 hour to arrive at that place. It really remote places but the scenes, the privacy, and truly relaxing out from hangky pangky in Salang.
Beautiful pics especially the water lookalike a mist. How to do it. My pics not up to that level la.

for these kind of shots, i use a cokin ND filter 4 stops slot in type.. it will slow the shutter without over-exposing the bright areas... biggrin.gif

It's been a busy weekend for me, covering 2 event on Saturday and Sunday in Penang. Today, along my journey home, just got enough time to pay a visit to Tmn tasik Taiping, Perak for an hour two. My first impression was totally unexpected. It was truly a  magnificent & beautiful lake compared to others I'd visited before.

Luckily for me at THAT time, the weather was perfect, allowing me to capture the beauty of this place with bright blue sky. As you know, when you mention Taiping, you think 'rain', but not this time though. Actually there are a lot of sections that forms the lake, but I only managed to cover 2 sections of it, that is near the MPI tower and near the zoo entrance if you know what I'm talking about.

Definitely I'll come again to this place when I got the chance...

Last Saturday was a hot day, no doubt about it. It was also the weekend of the MotoGP event in Sepang. I've been attending several F1 races, Japan GT, Merdeka Millennium Endurance and AFOS, but this is the first time watching 2-wheels machine live in action. A lot of people say at RM80, it's a bit too expensive to say the least, but it actually depends on how you value THAT money. If you just going to spend an hour or two just watching Valentino Rossi riding around the track, you may very well just stay at home and watch it in front of the 'idiot box'.

But, if you do a little bit more of thinking, at RM80, you'll get to see 2 days of the event (qualifying and race day), not to mention FREE entry on Friday practice, a lot of merchandise booth at discounted rate, endless photographic opportunity, and above all, the ATMOSPHERE of being in a racing environment, the feel of speed, the sound of the machine and a sense of tense surrounding the area. For a true motorsport fan, this IS why you pay RM80 for, but who doesn't, I'm sure tomorrow morning you'll be happy to wear some racing shirt to office.

The Shot of the Day

MotoGP race day on Sunday. Me and Nizar arrived there a few minutes past 12, and the actions has already started. The weather was hot and sunny, perfect for racing action. Before we go straight to the stands, we took some time to wander around the promotion booth, looking for some merchandise and hot chicks. After finished shooting some 'birds', me and Nizar head to the grandstand, hoping to get the best view for the start of the main event, which was the MotoGP premier class category. We found a spot, then throughout the race, we keep switching places back and forth just to make sure we covered possibly all the angles available.

It was a perfect weekend for me and for friends as this was my first experience watching MotoGP live in Sepang!
