wondering if run game from external HDD will affect the game performance or smoothness?
*
QUOTE(tohff7 @ Mar 7 2017, 05:22 PM)
theoretically, loading time should be faster because of the higher transfer rate of USB3.0 and if u r using a 7200rpm HDD.

expect ppl to do the testing when the 4.50 firmware is officially out
*
The differences are very subtle, in fact they are in the regions of human error timing. No mechanical HDD is fast enough to fully saturate a USB 3.0 bandwidth to begin with.

SSD as external vs SSD as internal though, well.. problem is that the SATA interface is all tied back down to a USB bus on the PS4's southbridge. So the SSD is really only as fast as a USB 3.0 bus, which means no difference on the PS4 Pro, but a couple seconds shaved off on the OG PS4.

I believe there is an in-depth look on this later on by some media outlets. Take my comparisons with a grain of salt, I simply timed them with a stop watch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, since both the slim and pro use USB 3.1. If paired with a usb 3.1 hdd (assuming it's arriving soon), it will have some improvement right?
*
Common misconception.

The PS4 Pro and PS4 slim has USB 3.1 GEN 1 port. USB 3.1 Gen1 is basically a renamed USB 3.0 port, which has the same 5gbps throughput. The higher bandwidth USB 3.1 with a max throughput of 10gbps is called Gen 2.

They are 2 different specs sharing a similar name.

You can put a HDD into a legitimate USB 3.1 Gen2 external enclosure, but it doesn't mean jack because it will still only transfer at Gen1 speeds. More over, as I've said; there are no HDDs fast enough to even fully saturate a Gen1 (5gbps) connection in the first place.

Assuming a 2TB 2.5" HDD uses 1 platter vs a 2TB 3.5" using platter, both at 7200rpm - there is in theory no difference.

Unfortunately, reality is that there are only 2TB 2.5" consumer drives that runs at 5400rpm, using dual 1TB platters. On the 3.5" side, there are 7200rpm drives using 1 platter for a 2TB drive. The difference between them on a PS4 ecosystem is a little bit harder to measure because the overhead that the OS uses is different compared to that of Windows.

All else considered, a 3.5" 2TB drive at 7200rpm should always outperform a 2.5" 2TB drive running at 5400rpm. This much is obvious, but the thing is - the difference isn't very significant at all.

That said, reliability wise - 3.5" drives are usually built to withstand a higher tolerance of vibration shocks, they have a longer actuator arm that sweeps more linearly and they generally have less platters to deal with (of course, don't compare a 2007 drive to a 2017 one). But all this is just on paper of course.

ps5 rumors flying around..out 2018 sweat.gif

2018 is when we will hear a mostly "taped-out" PS5 spec (meaning, almost ready for production). All boils down to how badly the Scorpio will beat the PS4 Pro though. I feel 2019 is still the most optimum time frame to launch the next PlayStation.

They can sell well if it's ps4 compatible.
Btw maybe sony board panicked on scorpio power. The supposely scorpio killer ps4 pro seem too weak eventhough launch period early 6 month than scorpio. Push it two more years and scorpio wins
*
Perhaps, maybe. Let's face it though, the scorpio would have ended up more powerful than the Pro either ways at the end of the day. MS approach to the console market now is different than what they envisioned 3 years ago.

Just a heads up before you guys dump your entire library of games onto your external HDD.

There are reports that some games can and will perform poorly on the external drive vs being on the internal drive. By poorly, some games can get stuttering in cutscenes (Yakuza 0) and erratic framerate drops when loading into a different area (Dark Souls 3).
No hard numbers here, but I'm just reading these from neogaf, reddit and the official PS forums.

Also some users has said that their external drives are randomly disconnecting. Now I've only read like 3 reports on this, so it probably doesn't mean anything because it could have been down to their enclosure having issues (I once had a malfunctioning external enclosure too).

Me personally, I have been using the 4.5 beta for nearly a month now but haven't encountered any of these issues. But then again, I haven't thrown my entire library of games onto the external drive either. In fact, I've only played 2 games off the external drive so far (Destiny and Injustice).

auto updates barely work on my PS4s (yes, that's plural)

From my launch PS4 to my Batman PS4 and now PS4Pro...sometimes auto updates work, other times(make that MOST of the time) they only start the minute I switch on the console (I always set the console to rest mode, never shut down)

a barely functioning feature shakehead.gif
*
Auto updates are triggered only once per day and that's 5am our time. The problem? Most games have their updates out Before or AFTER that time, so our PS4 doesn't get the cue for the auto update to happen. It's a silly flaw, but it's one way for Sony not to have 50 million machines pinging their servers every minute.

It's effin' infuriating I know.

how nice of them to only have it active during a certain hour yet don't inform...unlike the ps3 era when we can manually set doh.gif

I swear, this ps4 ps+ is not that much better than ps3's free online.

anyway, with regard to the external hard disk, i find my ps4pro now triple beeps way more often when i set it to rest mode.
if i leave it to rest mode by itself automatically by setting the power saving option, this doesn't seem to happen at all. hmm.gif
*
Hmm. Is your ext hdd connected at all times? Also do you have "provide USB power" under rest mode enabled?

yes to both.
have to stress that i'm still installing (downloading) content to the external.
*
There seems to be an issue if you're downloading content onto your external drive when the system is in rest mode. I saw a few reports on this.

Only way I can explain is that the external HDD park its actuator head when there it is told that there isn't much power being supplied. The USB ports in rest mode provides less voltage than when it is turned on. Just a theory, I don't think it's anything definite either.

I personally have the provide USB power turned off though.

It's great when it works. Unfortunately, the product's QA is pretty dicey. You either get one that works properly or one that doesn't.

Used it for a while until I got my battlebeaver custom controller though.

thx for the tip i'll try later, i'm just afraid my tv don't have the hardware for HDR
*
2014?

Samsung didn't release a single TV with HDR capability in 2014.

HDMI 2.0 is a connection spec. It enables the capability to ACCEPT HDR signal input, but that doesn't mean the TV has the capability to process such signal in the first place. So case in point, no Samsung TV from 2014 could process HDR. Even if they could, they simply weren't even bright enough to do HDR justice anyways.

I remember Samsung releasing an "evo HDR" kit or something in 2015 for some of their highest end 2014 TVs to process HDR. But the results were mostly mediocre at best, since the hardware on the TV wasn't even up to snuff in the first place.

You all know that you can call PlayStation customer service to register your warranty right?

Just call this number: 1 800 81 4963 (PlayStation Asia, under SCEHK)

Really? I registered my warranty in 10 minutes tops. Half of that was waiting for someone to pick up. Better than waiting indefinite weeks for the website to come back on isn't it?

If I got a game from france..will it be in french? Anyone can clarify this thing

Most games from EU region have atleast multiple languages in subs and/or dubs - French included. So if it's R2, safe to assume it should have French language support.

*
There are only 2 dubs recorded for Persona 5 - English and Japanese.

All other languages are only in subs.

The writing in the box could be in French, this one you will have to double confirm with the seller from Amazon (or with Amazon themselves).

They are based in Hong Kong. Their English isn't the best, definitely not "can't even understand basic English". I had no issues conveying my warranty registration with them through the phone, the lady on the phone was absolutely fine.
