SSD as external vs SSD as internal though, well.. problem is that the SATA interface is all tied back down to a USB bus on the PS4's southbridge. So the SSD is really only as fast as a USB 3.0 bus, which means no difference on the PS4 Pro, but a couple seconds shaved off on the OG PS4.
I believe there is an in-depth look on this later on by some media outlets. Take my comparisons with a grain of salt, I simply timed them with a stop watch.
