Hi,

Anybody know how is the working environment at Schlumberger? How is their final stage interview?

Is it good place to work? How is their pay system?

Please kindly share your experience with Schlumberger. Any useful comment will be much appreciated.

thanks.

May I know how can I apply in Malaysia? It is just too difficult to find the door to knock for oil and gas industry. Thanks in advance.

SLB is one of the best oil and gas services companies in the world. They are more efficient than their main rival, Haliburton.

I was in slb for a few years, I got recruited when they came to my university as well. I was doing electrical engineering, and somehow I got sucked into IT in slb. They had a IT consultancy department back then.

I would say it's the best company to build your career foundation. They are the first to implement anything new in the market, so you can learn a lot there and get more exposure. I still remember when they roll out their smart card, pki, digital certificate, active directory services etc. BEFORE it even became the hot areas nowadays, so they have a solid ground to compete in these areas. Anyway, that was sometime ago.

Nowadays they are very focused in oil and gas areas. Their oil exploration and evaluation software are the best in breed, and they are commanding big margins in it. If you are in the oil and gas field, then you can be the field engineer or the office exec. My friend who has been in slb for 7 years now moved from technical to business development, commanding nearly RM10k now, with commision from sales around RM50k annually. And yes, they do send you overseas for training from time to time.

Their policy is that you will be relocated to different locations every 2 years or so, depending on your performance and preference. I have been to every continent except antartica while with slb. FYI I was there for 4 years.

I went through 5 round of interviews at the time. Consider it a privilege if you can get in; many ppl who know this company will not even think if they will go in, just how can they get in :-)

Hope the info helps.

I heard that if you are directly involved in their oil and gas business the money is really good. Interviews are tough though, my friend attended one and the interviewer crushed a piece of paper, handed it to him and told my friend 'sell this piece of paper to me,make me want to buy this piece of paper'. no joke

hi friends,
wow....schlumberger is the best place to build your career.sounds good. rclxms.gif
well i don't work with any service company (oil and gas).
i work with offshore drilling contractor. i have chance to work with crew from
schlumberger, halliburton and baker.more or less i know about their job, and their
hidden story.
for any people(especially fresh grads or those want to work offshore), schlumberger used to be one of the best company (there is no such thing as the best).i don't much about IT or slb(schlumberger) software, since all their report on logging activities will go to drilling supervisor and office.
but, one thing i must say....most service company don't have fixed schedule.
be prepared for that okay.when it comes to money i know some of slb engineer who already work with other company eg.hall(halliburton).
to build your career foundation,it is something depend on you, not the company that you work with.
meejawa, you working in the office or offshore?me, i started working at sea since 1992 and i don't see any best company yet.the best company is the company that can give you good money. thumbup.gif (for me at least).i cannot deny the fact that slb is one the best company that provide some service like logging.
if you really want to make money, you have to go to oversea my friend. tongue.gif
i don't think is nice thing to say that "slb more efficient than hall".it really hurts for
hall people to read your statement meejawa.my company holds so many world records in offshore drilling but we are far from being one of the best.at least i have fixed schedule and i happy with that.

I based my comments that SLB is more efficient than HAL in term of their profit/revenue ratio, not the offshore drilling records. If we are going to talk about records it'll be pointless as it will be subjective in terms of calue of each as well as the quantity. And there's nothing to feel hurt about as that is the fact. Check how much revenue each company bring in and look at the profit margin. SLB's stock has been split once and it took less than 2 years for it to get back close to the level before split. How they did it or what it means I'm sure there are more ppl out there more qualified than me to explain.

One thing I have to mention though is that some of the SLB employees are rather cocky. I'm stressing SOME, not ALL. I'd think because they know their place in the OnG industries and how much they command. Their currently set-up consulting arm is charging the customers more than USD1000 per day per consultant. Yet they are still being sought after. Says something about their competencies aint it? They don't have to act that way but some just do.

It' interesting to hear the interview stories on slb. In my time I was asked to build a ship using newspaper together with my "designated enemy". And the winner is someone who helped the enemy to complete their ship as well. :-)

Anyway, I believe all that is to build confidence. They want the best and they are not reserved in their compensation package. As I mentioned for sales you can get easily average >RM15k after a couple years if you are good. So if you really can sell that piece of crumbled paper to the interviewer, you're the one.

If i am not mistaken, anyone who have a degree in geophysic can get a starting salary of over 3k ( fresh grads ). However, it is very hard to find a job in this industry. I have a friends earning more than xxxxx figure from this company. Currenty he is on other country and his salary converted to USD.

fresh grads with degree/diploma in mechanical, electrical, petroleum will have better
chance if they want to work in oil and gas salary.
for rig crew you only need good english and some basic mathematic.
after 5 years, the salary should be around rm 20k..... rclxms.gif

for training program... yes.some company have their own training program for fresh grads in order to prepare them as a rig manager.
myself...i started as a painter tongue.gif .
normally you will start as painter, roustabout, roughneck, derrickman, pumpman,
assistant driller, driller, toolpusher, offshore installation manager, rig manager then.... sky is the limit.
btw it depend on training program. u have to complete certain module in specific time.different company, different module.
degree is only a paper thingy to get you into interview.you will learn something new everyday coz there is no school that teach you about drilling blush.gif

Talking about training, make sure you train for something outside the oil rig as well. You could for example get injured early in your career and can't work on an oil rig again or the oil price per barrel could fall to very low levels and you'll find yourself unemployed and unemployable.

So if you're in the oil and gas industry, pray the worse case scenarios don't happen...
