SLB is one of the best oil and gas services companies in the world. They are more efficient than their main rival, Haliburton.

I was in slb for a few years, I got recruited when they came to my university as well. I was doing electrical engineering, and somehow I got sucked into IT in slb. They had a IT consultancy department back then.

I would say it's the best company to build your career foundation. They are the first to implement anything new in the market, so you can learn a lot there and get more exposure. I still remember when they roll out their smart card, pki, digital certificate, active directory services etc. BEFORE it even became the hot areas nowadays, so they have a solid ground to compete in these areas. Anyway, that was sometime ago.

Nowadays they are very focused in oil and gas areas. Their oil exploration and evaluation software are the best in breed, and they are commanding big margins in it. If you are in the oil and gas field, then you can be the field engineer or the office exec. My friend who has been in slb for 7 years now moved from technical to business development, commanding nearly RM10k now, with commision from sales around RM50k annually. And yes, they do send you overseas for training from time to time.

Their policy is that you will be relocated to different locations every 2 years or so, depending on your performance and preference. I have been to every continent except antartica while with slb. FYI I was there for 4 years.

I went through 5 round of interviews at the time. Consider it a privilege if you can get in; many ppl who know this company will not even think if they will go in, just how can they get in :-)

I based my comments that SLB is more efficient than HAL in term of their profit/revenue ratio, not the offshore drilling records. If we are going to talk about records it'll be pointless as it will be subjective in terms of calue of each as well as the quantity. And there's nothing to feel hurt about as that is the fact. Check how much revenue each company bring in and look at the profit margin. SLB's stock has been split once and it took less than 2 years for it to get back close to the level before split. How they did it or what it means I'm sure there are more ppl out there more qualified than me to explain.

One thing I have to mention though is that some of the SLB employees are rather cocky. I'm stressing SOME, not ALL. I'd think because they know their place in the OnG industries and how much they command. Their currently set-up consulting arm is charging the customers more than USD1000 per day per consultant. Yet they are still being sought after. Says something about their competencies aint it? They don't have to act that way but some just do.

It' interesting to hear the interview stories on slb. In my time I was asked to build a ship using newspaper together with my "designated enemy". And the winner is someone who helped the enemy to complete their ship as well. :-)

Anyway, I believe all that is to build confidence. They want the best and they are not reserved in their compensation package. As I mentioned for sales you can get easily average >RM15k after a couple years if you are good. So if you really can sell that piece of crumbled paper to the interviewer, you're the one.
