After visiting Lowyat plaza today and meeting those promoters.. I m even more confused about the pricing of all versions of Windows Vista!! Can anyone clarify this by posting the correct pricing of both OEM and Retail Price for each and every version of Windows Vista from Home Basic til Ultimate Version? Tomorrow i m gona visit LYP once more.. to get it!!! 1 Female promoter told me that OEM is only for 1 PC...and not transferable..thts the different from Retail! How true is tht? 1 Male promoter told me OEM is like a pirating software and canot be updated online.. Worst promoter I've ever met I think...True? Thanks....

OEM should be purchased along with a new PC, that after installed, it has to be a part of the computer, u can format and reinstall it back to the same pc, its original, legal copy. But its limitation is u CANNOT installed it again into another pc even u dont use the old pc anymore or change to another operating system. Cause it has to run a procedure to bind the copy of the windows to your hardware, i believe its call activate.
After install, u are given 30 days to activate your copy of windows with internet, where microsoft know the OEM copy u purchased is link to the hardware, so if u reinstalled to another computer, u cannot reactivate anymore thus, after 30 days, it will lock your PC.
Retail is different, u have 1 copy, u can install into 1 unit of your computer, u can move it from pc to pc, as long as u have enough license for each pc u have(if u have 5 pc running windows xp pro, u can install into 5 pc), its not bind into any hardware, so u can change, upgrade, so its more expensive. And I think u can have another backup copy running with the retail version(installed into 2 pc with 1 license, as long as they dont run simutanously), its for backup reason(1 pc down, u swap).

u can buy them saparately, the activation is the point of decision, if u activate with wrong pc, sorry, there is no turning back, the key is used, registered, for the 1st pc u activate with.
I donno the price but thats how OEM works.

I think OEM is cheaper compared to retail as the license is only applicable to the PC that comes with it. If u try installing OEM on another machine or yr newer PC with the same CD-key, it is considered as pirated and u won't be able to activate yr windows. As for retail version, u can use it only on 1 machine, but u can use it jz in case u wan to sell off yr old PC and get a new one, the key is still usable in the new PC.

QUOTE(limjix @ Feb 4 2007, 09:13 AM) hey i want to ask my computer is currently running Windows XP Pro OEM version so can i buy Vista Home Premium OEM edition and install on this computer? By law, no. OEM is supposed to be shipped (or rather pre-installed) with a new computer hardware only QUOTE 1 Male promoter told me OEM is like a pirating software and canot be updated online.. Worst promoter I've ever met I think...True? This could be the most hilarious statement I've ever seen. I guess he's too desperate to meet his quota in selling retail Vista This post has been edited by samurai1337: Feb 4 2007, 09:30 AM

QUOTE(samurai1337 @ Feb 4 2007, 09:17 AM) By law, no. OEM is supposed to be shipped (or rather pre-installed) with a new computer hardware only but on the other hand, there are a lot of hardware resellers to sell out those OEM-edition windows,so we saw that there has such markets because most of consumers don't know or don't care about what is the type of the software at all.And actually for my sense, the OEM version can cheaper a lot than retail one. what we only need to consider is how is your computer's mainboard quality as the OEM version will follow the mainboard after you first time install, thus it cannot be actived by other computer or different mainboard.(conclusion from other ppls as well).

The Star newspaper reported "Prices range from RM860 to RM1,700, but buyers can get up to 17% discount during the promotion period. "
I presume the promotion period is left only today.
