Helpful tips especially for beginners (Level Up Fast, Tips And Tricks, etc) :
• Save your Stardust. Do not use them on common and low-CP Pokémon. As your player level gets higher, (around level 20) you would encounter high cp Pokémon.

Rate Your Pokémon IV!

QUOTE
WHAT ARE IV'S?
Similar to previous Pokémon games, each of your Pokémon have individual values (or IVs) for each attribute: Stamina, Attack, and Defense. These get added to the base attribute that differs for each Pokémon species. Each of these three values can be between 0 and 15, the higher being more desirable.
Your CP is influenced by the total values for all three attributes, and your HP is influenced by the total value for Stamina. It's become common to try to determine these values from your CP and HP values, along with a few other variables to rate your Pokémon, and decide if they're worth keeping.

HOW IMPORTANT ARE IV'S?
In the end, IVs may cause a ~5% difference from average in CP (~3% for the strongest Pokémon, ~10% for the weakest), which will continue despite powering up your Pokémon. While it's desirable to have a perfect or near-perfect Pokémon (15, 15, 15), things like Pokémon species or their moveset can often be much more important - some moves often have double the p/s, which is more than IVs could ever change.

Q : at what % of perfection do you keep the Pokémon?
A : 90%+ seems very solid. (IMO 80% and above should be good)
Another Answer :
TLDR ; Move set > IVs

In the main series games the only RNG part of obtaining a Pokémon was IVs and you could easily hatch as many eggs as you wanted to get the right combination.
In Pokémon GO Pokémon are harder to obtain and have more RNG elements to them; species, IVs, and moveset.
I think in Pokemon GO species and moveset will trump IVs. This applies more to second stage evolutions and very rare Pokémon.
For instance I have a Blastoise with a good moveset but the IVs aren't great. Even if I go find a perfect Squirtle and save up 125 Candy I could end up with a horrible moveset. So at this point I don't think it's worth it.

Gyms/ Gym Battles
Gyms are towering, spinning monuments found out in the wild, which can be captured with gym battles defended by increasing their prestige level. You can join a team once your Trainer level hits 5; when you next interact with a Gym, Professor Willow invites you to join one of the game's three teams - Team Instinct, Team Mystic, or Team Valor.

•Gym training and raising Prestige in friendly Pokémon Go Gyms
QUOTE
-Training is the practice of battling yours or your own Team's Pokémon at friendly, Team-controlled Gyms, for the purpose of raising the Gym's prestige and earning yourself significant amounts of XP in the process.
-The XP earned from training is equal to 10 percent of the Prestige gained.
-The maximum Prestige gained from defeating a single Pokémon through Training is 1000 - and therefore the maximum XP per defeated Pokémon in Training is 100XP.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q : I ran out of Pokéballs. How can I get more?
A : You need to go a Pokéstop to get more Pokéballs. PokéStops are indicated on your map with blue icons. When you're close enough to interact with the icon, it will change shape. Clicking on the icon will then allows you to swipe the Photo Disc, which will generate items in bubbles. Tap the bubbles to collect your items! (You can also just exit the PokéStop once the items appear. They will be collected regardless). You can also buy them in shop.

Q : How do I battle with other Pokémon?
A : You can activate a battle by tapping the little boxing glove icon when you're close enough to the gym.
Q : How to add my Pokémon to a gym?
A : You can assign your Pokémon to a gym only if the gym is taken over by your team. Find your team's gym and once a spot opens up, you will see a
new icon in the bottom left corner of the screen. It looks like the Pokémon symbol with a plus (+) sign next to it
Q : I can't add my Pokémon to a friendly gym! Why?
A : The most likely cause of this is that all of the gym's slots are full, which means you will not be able to add another Pokémon until the gym is upgraded. Gyms can hold a number of Pokémon equal to the gym's level, so the gym in question is likely only level one, and its slot is already full. To increase a gym's level, you must win friendly "battles" (training) against the gym using only one Pokémon (as opposed to the usual six). Every time you beat a Pokémon at that gym, its prestige will raise, eventually leveling it up and adding another slot. At this point, you should be able to add a new Pokémon to the gym.
Q : Should I power up or evolve my Pokémon first?
A : You should evolve your Pokémon first, then check it's moveset. If it's good, you can power it up. If it's not, you still can power it up if you want to.
