Driver involved in Nicky Hayden's fatal crash sentenced

The driver involved in 2006 MotoGP world champion Nicky Hayden's fatal cycling collision last year has been given a one-year suspended prison sentence.

The 31-year-old driver, who was not named throughout the trial, was liable to a one- or two-year jail sentence after being found guilty of road homicide.

But judge Vinicio Canatarini decided to lower the penalty, the reasons for which he will reveal in 90 days' time.

The driver has also had his driving licence withdrawn and will pay all court costs.

The court heard that Hayden, who was cycling, was struck by a Peugeot 206 at 70km/h on a road in Rimini with a 50km/h speed limit on May 17 last year.

The 35-year-old American died five days later in hospital.

An expert witness for the prosecution alleged the driver could have stopped and "entirely avoided the accident" if he was travelling 20km/h slower.

Defence lawyers argued that Hayden had failed to halt at a stop sign, and was cycling with ear buds in and listening to music.

An official accident report attributed 30% of blame to the car driver.

Evidence included CCTV from a nearby house that captured the fatal collision.

Hayden's family was not present at the criminal trial, but has launched its own civil action against the driver.

Or strap a ballast (enforce a minimum rider + bike weight).
*
In WSBK weight doesn't play a factor much. There are smaller guys than JR in the championship still can't get near him.

They should return to MotoGP if they dare.

They should. More manufacturers the better. I'd rather see more manufacturers than more satellite teams.

Modenas should return too laugh.gif

I believe kawa have the financial capability to compete back in motogp.... last time they pulled out due to financial reasons (mainly caused by late-2000s economic recession).
*
Yup, Marco Melandri was the victim, signed for Factory Kawasaki but team pulled out at the last minute. Then had to settle for the factory backed Hayate team, even had a podium. That year was probably the biggest missed opportunity for Kawasaki in MotoGP.

Yup, now I don't care about championship anymore when watching both MotoGP & F1. I take it as per individual races only.

Anyway in FP1, Dovi in the Duc looks fast and the track should suit the bike more so hopefully he can steal the win this weekend. Yamaha somewhat ok but not as strong as last race.
*
Me too, F1 I just watch Kimi laugh.gif

That's inevitable.... but rookies title battle still on icon_idea.gif

Pescao just need to (consistently) finish in front of Morbidelli at all remaining races.... but frankly speaking not an easy job.
*
Not just in front of Morbidelli but in the points too.

Sow when Kimi leaves you'll stop watching? I was like that when Senna died, but then I started to watch again when Hakinen started winning and also because I got nothing else to watch on Sundays!
*
Will still watch probably, I'll find some other person to follow.

Congrats to MM93 for the title win, Scott Redding should've hugged him when he won in Thailand at least will get another race for title fight.

Alvaro Bautista replacing Lorenzo for the next race. Nice farewell gift from Ducati, they probably want to keep him but there's not enough seats available, Factory ride in SBK next best thing.

Who will that be??  brows.gif

Naah that shoulder dislocation is already common for him. I think there's 1 race sometime ago where he had a dislocated shoulder during Friday practice but then still can qualify and race asi f nothing happened.

Probably robot hand with different hand suitable for different track

Too bad for HS55 crash. He was lonely but safe in 8th. KTM next year I predict will be greatly improved. With 4 riders and 2 well experienced test riders.

Comments online kinda make fun of the livery. I admit could've been better, too much black in my opinion. And did they choose McPhee so that his number matches Sasaki? doh.gif

Dukahati using Panigale R which is V4 version right? So far behind hopeless for them revive the glory days. More hp and higher rev also cannot keep up with old Kawasaki.
*
Yup, they keep saying it is better now but I see the Yamaha improving faster then them. Not surprised if Yamaha is fighting more with the Kawasaki this coming season. Chaz Davies is also over-rated in my opinion.

I agree, this is more noticeable on the track but Leopard Racing has similar colours.

Noticed Razlan & some media outlets keep saying that SRT is the first Malaysian MotoGP team.... do they even remember Proton Team KR Modenas? doh.gif

And Quartararo received factory-spec bike. This will make battle for rookies title more exciting (especially with all eyes & hypes on Bagnaia).

Yeah, I feel Razlan has been building too much hype. Of course I'm proud for SRT but blabbing too much without results(yet), you could fall flat on your face. The Proton KR Modenas Team was not really fully Malaysian because it was run by Kenny Roberts Snr. but it was close enough. Unfortunately the KR3 Modenas engine wasn't powerful enough to challenge the big teams. They moved to the V5 but it was probably too late since everyone moved over to 4 strokes then. The potential was there though but I felt they folded too soon.

Anyway back to current racing, it seems Ducati and Yamaha are working quite good with their riders. Ducati's riders working in tandem. Really give insight what how JL and AD worked before(or didn't work laugh.gif )
https://www.crash.net/motogp/news/912719/1/...lp-it-s-unusual

And MV seems to be working on outright speed whereas VR working on tyre longevity
https://www.crash.net/motogp/news/912717/1/...ans-bike-s-good

I'm in anticipation on how JL will work with MM. I'm guessing it probably won't be so harmonious. I could be wrong.
