Hello all agri-sifu~~

I am an engineer at age of 28, thinking of wanna do plantation and start my own business  biggrin.gif

For those short-term crops, usually needs how long for newbie like me to able to break even the investment? Plan to do part time first for 1-2 years, and then full time on the plantation after that.  laugh.gif

I have few relatives (brothers, retired parents) can help up abit for starting and jaga the plantation, target to start on a 1 acres agri land  nod.gif

I should be able to survive with RM1-2k income from this agri plantation (i have other side income but slightly less than Rm1k).  sweat.gif

My current job pay reasonable well, dont think is wise to quit my job and start plantation fresh with only side income though  blush.gif

Usually needs how long only can generate income like RM1-2k?  icon_question.gif

Welcome Funnyface, great to hear that you have interest going into farming.

Would suggest you read up & learn up on farming first ( just like any business, knowledge & experience needed).

Jabatan Pertanian is a good start, where you can get information and they even hold courses.

It's always great to have more people to help, the more the merrier.

As with all business start-up, it really matters to keep your expenses low (unless you have a high start-up).

I would suggest that you look into high value crops as you are thinking of low acreage (1 only) and high income (1~2 K a month).

Do bear in mind that information provided, even from Pertanian is based on ideal condition, successful planting (harvesting) on the first crop (try).

Also check on your marketing plan / prices.

You shall need to have all the above in place, before you can do a projection on income.

Do keep us update on your venture. biggrin.gif

Hello funnyface,

I'll take things one step at the time.. target your crop, plant them, sell them and get the feel of the market..

when you think you can do it, plant larger... planting is not a problem but selling can be a big problem..

btw, can anyone help me..? how long can i pick up my banana fruit if they were exposed to mancozeb application.. Mr Para?

Mr Farmer, ginger price is good around here... replanting 2nd season  happy.gif

I had not been doing well on Ginger. I brought in some Bentong Ginger (famous for post maternity consumption), it was great on trial, but when I do it on a lager scale, failed. I think it need a cooler environment. Anyway had to stop doing cash crops. Concentrating on longer term crops nowadays.

Great to hear that ginger price is good. drool.gif

QUOTE(mseong @ Feb 13 2014, 12:53 PM)
Hi guys,
This is my first post and I just want to say hi & thanks to all the follow seniors/sifus whom made this thread a treasure trove of information relating to agriculture. Similar to other guys, I’m very keen to get into agriculture/(or even aquaculture) following the hype that it is the new frontier and given my disillusionment with Malaysia’s manufacturing industry which has been in decline for a long while now, no thanks in large part due to the govment’s ineptitude.

I have a background in accounting and safe to say have absolutely no technical/working experiences in this field and definitely don’t know where to start. What I do have is some land (around Klang Selangor area, free from emcumbrances, undulating slope – currently with very old palm oil). So a call out to anyone who’s interested to kickstart & venture into this together i.e. xeroxphan.

The above aside, taking into the advice of MrFarmer and Michael J, definitely makes sense to do some serious learning first.  I’m checking out the DoA courses to enrol. Just interested, how did you guys begin what you were doing, mind sharing?
*
Well mseong, I did it the wrong way. I jump into Agri blur blur. After 4 years, still blur. rclxub.gif Had learned a lot along the way, lots of up & down and I see still a long way to go. You see I stayed in an apartment with zero planting skill.
Learning is part of the great challenge. Am still loving it. Was working until I lost track of time this afternoon. Only realized that it was 2 o,clock when my tummy compliant and my legs felt weak. Hey I've not taken lunch biggrin.gif

I want to know if anyone of you have faced Thief/violent criminals that rompak your harvest?  sweat.gif

If yes how do you handle it? Very worry about this.... doh.gif  I heard there is a group of Indian (not trying to be racist but...) always wondering around and steal/rob your harvest....  cry.gif
*
Would suggest that if violent, no point resisting. Our live is too precious.

I also had my share of thief, sometimes there is nothing much you can do. The kampung folks do some "jampi" and tie a red cloth around the tree.

eggs have a hard shell unlike apple. but no harm trying & do share the result.

Mr framer,
i heard that wild agar tree is preferred compared to injected ones?
and how much cost per injection if you have any infos?

I remember it could be the MARDI booth in MAHA 2012 that they have different "Wax" for fruits. Hmmh, wondering when is MAHA 2014.

pok
I don't really know. I planted, just to play play. Back in June 14, 3 Indons fell a tree (wild) near our plantation, got about 3 kg resin, sold in Kota Kinabaly for $24,000.

Wild or grown, I guess these are marketing strategy / branding.

Am thinking of growing more, for retirement. drool.gif

QUOTE(Michael J. @ Apr 28 2014, 06:11 PM)
Hi all.

How's the group been doing so far? I know Para and Mr. Farmer have been really busy, so have I. Anybody wanna update a little?

On my part, I am still involved with research, primarily dealing with plant diseases. A lot of P&C stuff, so can't reveal much.

Anyway, talking about gaharu... UNIMAS has come up with a method of producing the essential oil without needing to plant the trees. Apparently, the method does work, but needs some fine tuning. Also, it still remains to be seen if it can be scaled up to large production quantities (the likes of a Carlsberg fermentary). Nonetheless, if the tech proves worthy, there may be less needs for inoculated tree plantations.

On a separate note, I've been noticing a massive drop in key lime production, coupled with a 100% surge in prices. It used to cost about RM4/kg, but now it is about RM9/kg in most places. Anybody growing key limes?
*
Hi Michael,
Nice to see you. This tread is a bit slow lately :-)
With rubber prices so low, have no choice but to look into fruit trees.
Concentrating on my trials on Avocado, Jackfruits & Soursop.
Have 4 trees of Lime, 3 key lime & 1 Limau Purut, more on experimenting, don't really know how to care for them. Started these so that can use it for propagating if/when required.

Started trial for Fig.
Collecting data, started mini trial and looking into a Fig orchard. What do you guys think?

Maybe looking at Dragon Fruit?

Opinion please. blush.gif
