My friend, the Agri Shop just introduced me to the local Water Melon King (planter ). Unfortunately it's over here in Sabah, otherwise I can hook him up for you. Btw, now there are collectors from Johor, buying up banana here. From Kuching collecting vegetables, like chillies & etc.

I'm actually looking for sun dried Cocoa beans for experiementation brewing (just like coffee bean brewing) and i was wondering will the same variant of Cocoa tree coming from different part of malaysia will have diff characteristic (eg.. from sabah maybe the beans are more acidic compare to others?)

currently i'm only sourcing the beans locally... i'm also facing difficulties trying to reach those suppliers as their MOQ is quite large and i only require small amount for my usage. If anyone owns a farm and could sell me about 1-5kg of the cocoa beans... that would be delightful

I guess it happens to other crops as well... and i believe it also explains why why certain fruit carries a hint of flavor from other fruit.. (not sure it is only me or not thou...)

However, i've manage to get some dried cocoa bean from my friend that is still studying in indonesia.. no luck sourcing from locals thou...

Where are you located first of all? You can actually buy dried cocoa beans from the Malaysian Cocoa Board stations located all over Peninsular, Sabah and Sarawak. If you want to do cupping test, the research station at Nilai does conduct regular brewing and taste testing. For a more hands-on experience, you can visit their Jengka station. But to answer your question, yes, it will be quite different. And like Mr Farmer has put it correctly, it is the same with most plants as well. However for plants with high polyphenol/flavanol content, such as cocoa, coffee, wine grape etc., the effect of different micro and macro environment conditions on flavor is more drastic.

That is partly the reason for the different pricing and grade of cocoa beans throughout Malaysia. Eg. Bagan Datoh (Perak) is largely SMC2 grade with higher astringency and smaller bean size, whereas Tawau (Sabah) is SMC1 grade with deeper polyphenols but mellower taste and larger beans. If you studied the micro and macro conditions of both production areas, you'd notice that Bagan Datoh comprises of swampy coastal peat soil with high soil acidity, whereas Tawau has more alkaline volcanic soils. I shall not delve deeper into how such conditions affect flavor at this point, but am willing to do so if there are requests.

For general information, the "chocolate" that we are familiar with are actually a blend of different beans. The person doing the blend will mix different sources of beans to arrive at the specific flavor character desired by the manufacturer.

HI guys, me along with some partners just rented 5.5 acre of agri land in Kuala Kubu Baru. It was an ex-farm land but has overgrown as it was not managed for some time. At the moment we've hired several labourers to do land clearing.

It is perched on a hill slope with very old rubber and durian trees on the slope. Then a 10 feet stream flowing thru the land dividing the hill and a big fish pond which currrently overgrown with white and pink lotuses. Been told there's haruan inside at the moment. Around it are agri land with random trees of papaya, durian, limau kasturi/ purut, banana and jackfruit.

We're planning on free-range chicken, some goat for goat milk, cows(tentative), some home-stay and camping spot. Fish wise still unplan yet. Oh ya, and an area for herbs and spices that has medicinal value like, misai kucing, lemon balm and the likes. Will upload some pictures when i go down again coming weeks.

BTW anyone knows where can get best quality quality chicks? I've heard of DQ farm in bentong having the best quality organic chicken in the country, but unsure if they sell chicks coz as far as i know, many organic free range chicken farmers are very protective of their organic chicks.

Good idea. May I know how much is your rent? How long of lease? Is it possible to sign long term lease like 10-20 years?

Is there a certification of Organic Chick? Is there a certification for Organic Free Range Chicken? I read DOA has certification for Organic grow vegetables / fruits but not on Chicken. Maybe you can check with DOA and keep us posted.

Is your neighbor a certified organic farm? If not, you shall need a buffer zone, with so many things you have in mind, you may not have much land left for planting. Just my though, as I do not know what you are planning.

Lease is between you & owner. Most states you should not have problem (legality) for lease of 20 years.
