just want to know are there any significant differences btwn using 1 x 1Gb RAm & 2 x 512 Mb ????
According to apple site , it' best to use up the 2 slots so taht the dual memory channel can perform at its best. Has any1 feeel the diff ???

I would suggest you to get a standalone 1Gig Ram rather than 2x512MB ram. This is because later when you wanted to upgrade to 2 Gig, just slap another 1Gig would do. Dual Channel or single channel doesn't matter. It dont really makes much difference. I think it's more of a marketing gimmick tongue.gif

Get the 1Gb and slap it in for total of 1.25Gb. Its good enough AND upgradable.

I've been using this setup for few months, yet to upgrade another Gb cause rarely use that much memory. Hehe..

BTW, who knows what brand of RAM offered by other party supported for MB??

Can v find those 3rd party non-apple certified RAM that can run smoothly on MB easily in Penang??

if u dont plan to upgrade the memory in future anymore.. than get 2 x 512mb to enable the dual channel.

dual channel is like - two way two lanes motorway

single channel is like - two way but one lane motorway

hence dual channel can afford more transfer, more capacity, more efficiently.

but if u plan to upgrade ran again in the future, then get 1 x 1gb first to save up the slot for next time

if u plan tat ur total upgrade will be 1gb only, then get a 512mb first and get another 512mb next time when u got the cash again.. at least when u hv the total upgrade of 1gb, u can hv it running dual channel..

else throw much cash now for a 1gb and upgrade another 1gb ram or 512mb next time if u need it. but if u put 512mb next time, u wont hv the dual channel stuff.. which is not really important if u a lot of memory..

rhesusv..

if u r on the macbook, i think u need two of the same size rams, i.e. 2x512 or 2x1GB... it's dual channel... i heard the macbook does not boot or does some weird shit if only one slot's occupied...

U can give it a go... mayb the new core 2 duos allow tat... gd luck...

Its not a marketing gimmick . these ram and mainboard call them dual channel memory slots for a reason. its actually slower to have a machine with 1gb compared to 2x512 - there are tons of writeups on the net- go look for it.

I think everyone knows that, and that you cannot leave one slot empty. Just pop in the 1GB coupled with the existing 256MB for a total of 1.25GB. The upgradability of this setup is worth more than the speed improvement of 2X512MB setup.

if you are talking about the same amount of memory...i'd say dual channel memory is better at least under the benchmarks... but it might not be that much noticable...i'd opt for the 1 x 1GB upgrade as many here is correct as you do not have to sacrifice the 2 x 512MB in the future... furthermore... 1.25GB is more than 1GB even if it is only 256MB more.. and don't forget the macbook takes up another 64MBs for its built in display adapter...

just make sure you get the same memory in the future you get now to better optimize it... as DDR actually states that you should get a dual channel kit...which is more expensive than buying 2 separate pieces...

there are Kingston KTA memories available for around RM550 i think rather than the usual KVRs...

I'm using Corsair, no problems but there are people here against Corsair, maybe I'm the lucky one.

I think Kingston RAM prices came down, the 1GB is less than RM350 if not mistaken, while Corsair is still around RM395.

It's not that it's not good, just maybe not really compatible with the motherboard.

RM350 .. is kinda cheap ...

am looking to pop in a 1GB after CNY ..... but also wondering what to buy (as long as no compatibility issue.. performance wise, i don't think it is really noticeable)
