Chatime to open 200 more stores, eyes 2018 listing rclxm9.gif

user posted image

PUTRAJAYA: Loob Holding Sdn Bhd, the licensed owner of bubble tea chain Chatime Malaysia, aims to open 200 additional outlets nationwide under its three-year expansion plan, said chief executive officer Bryan Loo.

He said the company had partnered with Shell Malaysia to open Chatime outlets at 100 Shell petrol stations across the country, aimed at integrating bubble tea drinking as part of Malaysians’ lifestyle.

“We already have 20 stores at Shell petrol stations and will open another 80 outlets over the next three years,” he told Bernama recently. There are 175 Chatime stores in Malaysia at present.

Loo said the company was targeting to penetrate 25% of the total petrol station market share in Malaysia, leaving it with another 300-400 potential stores to be opened in the future.

To grow further, he said, the company was also looking at opening Chatime outlets at the 92 light rail transit stations, given they have the mass concentration of people.

“We are already speaking to them (Prasarana Malaysia Bhd). We want to reach every single location,” he said. As for the company’s long-term plan, Loo said it planned to go for an initial public offering on Bursa Malaysia in the next two years.

He said due to the weaker market sentiment, the company had to hold its plans for now and would execute it in 2018.

“I want to create a legacy for the family and organisation. The only way is to take the company public and allow public funds to grow the company to the regional level,” he added. - Bernama

Chatime still selling like hot cakes but a lot of ingredients they use seem to be low quality and watered down. Like the butterscotch drink they have is not creamy but is like a sugar filled and watered down butterscotch.

Very ambitious, but I think the outlet needs a makeover to make it more upmarket and premium. Anyway, I hope they will still hire cute college girl to operate their business.

Oldtown did well on the outlet design, but service quality really terrible. Hiring all cheap labour, foreigner with terrible command in english or malay.

Mmm thats true. See how.

Problem is that its not difficult to start up a bubble tea shop. Even I know where the wholesalers are; bought from them to sell at school carnival. If I want bubble tea I'll buy from pasar malam not Chatime. But if Chatime can bring down their prices just a little they might be able to really monopolise the market.

For Rm5.90 you get milk tea, small, with bubbles. If you want large with bubbles ie approx 16oz, its Rm7.90 IINM. Quite expensive considering its the same for a large latte at McCafe.

*
They can monopolize if they bring the price down (they literally are already lol), but I somehow think that Chatime is more of a premium type of bubble tea brand. And their marketing strategy its quite good, some more they keep on updating with new flavours that only available for a particular time.

Even the llaollao and the gindaco shops, those are pricey as hell but people would still queue and eat it.

MooCow and Tutti Fruitti existed years back (many have closed down), now llaollao comes up and 2-3 times more pricey than the existing froyo shops, but people would actually choose that over the existing ones lol

Malaysian always choose the more expensive ones somehow. Our disposable income got so high? hmm.gif

For Rm5.90 you get milk tea, small, with bubbles. If you want large with bubbles ie approx 16oz, its Rm7.90 IINM. Quite expensive considering its the same for a large latte at McCafe.

lol, chatime premium? they felt like some cheap ass bubble tea, gong cha is the premiun one

IMO if they wan to do premium bubble tea like wat u say they need to launch a new brand, cos chatime to all of us is just normal bubble tea, how they change it oso we wont feel its premium

its just like lets say mcd suddenly rebrand themselves as premium fast food, but u will still think dat its some cheapskate fast food

for me I see the business can work as they scale up

-good locations that they've selected got lots of traffic, can command premium over pasar malam milk tea (but not too much, their prices from rm6++ is still considered 'affordable')

-more shops = more brand visibility and more visits from customers. This builds a habit to buy from Chatime - once ppl bought it once, then more likely to buy in the future. If everything goes well, they'll be like the Mcdonalds of milk tea

I would say, I was wondering if Chatime may consider if going for a market penetration strategy would be more effective considering its product does not feature any premium value add over competing products easily available in other places for example pasar malams, competing chains and even sole proprietor businesses, and a strategy based solely on geographic distribution invites competition...

What is there to penetrate Mr.smart wannabe Kl boy.
EVERYONE knows bout chatime.
Tell me,what is there to penetrate?your shit hole?
Maintaining customer loyalty would be a better idea.

Lowering the price? Why would they do that? The product is aimed at middle to upper class,youngters/hipsters.They can afford it.Low price means fake products/tea made from powder. This mindset has been stuck in consumers' mind whereby "cheap things not good" and certainly is not the direction chatime wants to go.

Not your market penetration cheap price strategy where people buy tea with cheaper price or buy1 free 1.
You cant afford them you go buy pasar malam 1 lo.And then you console yourself they are better than chatime cause you cant afford them.

It's true some outlet is super disappointing. Normally I wouldnt expect much but for chatime it's different cos the boss Brian said that chatime is growing slower than other franchise because he needs to QC each outlet personally to maintain the quality.

Our disposable income got so high?  hmm.gif

Not your market penetration cheap price strategy where people buy tea with cheaper price or buy1 free 1.
You cant afford them you go buy pasar malam 1 lo.And then you console yourself they are better than chatime cause you cant afford them.
Totally understandable.

Just because you are ignorant about what else is available doesn't mean everyone else is. Typical ahbeng hipster also to confuse price and value.

As others have mentioned, there is Gongcha and Eachacup as well as other brands. When I say pasar malam I don't mean unker auntie ownself do with a home mixer, I mean professional looking food trucks such as this. Chatime is not offering anything special. Unless they can really attract more customers perhaps with lower price, they will end up like that other snack shop which tried to enter the petrol station market: Dunkin Donuts.

But then again, its people making poor purchasing decisions like you who keep the economy going, so by all means, continue to be hypnotised by the hype.

number not good enough.

now especially with low profit from petroleum product sales, this is another avenue for the station dealers to earn so money.

As someone mention it is just a trend and will be come like Dunkin Donut!

Lol. Funny la you.
Popular doesn't mean it's good. Popular just means their marketing strategy worked somewhere in the past.
