Heard if using something with rubber soles like Salomon Speedcross on the road, the soles will wear out very quickly. Going for hybrids like Hoka One One Challenger might work best. I've got Asics Venture 6 and it seems to work fine on road too.
*
this is correct. if you want to alternate between trail and tarmac, then go for shoes that is suitable for all terrain.

so first to decide is whether you are a minimalist or not (e.g hoka one one are for those who prefers maximum cushioning). next decide purpose, then decide the shoe. #my1centwhichhasnovaluedy

btw, nowadays many 'trail' run is not fully trail. it's usually a combination of trail, dirt road, tarmac, etc.

hello guys, wonder if this is the place i seek for opinion on gps watch. Am doing more hiking/trekking than road running actually.
*
garmin for aesthetic, suunto for functionality. things to consider:
- how many hours can the watch run on GPS
- is uploading map into your watch important (if you are the adventurous type, the answer is yes) or you just doing leisure hike on clearly marked trails.
- do you need the heart rate tracker? yes if you plan to do more trail running than hiking.
- budget $$

Others feel free to add.

My budget is sub 1.5k
-GPS batt life up to 24hour is more than sufficient. More than dayhike means multi-day with camp allowing me to charge it back in the evening
-Map feature is quite needed
-HR tracker will be optional, weather feature optional but good to have as well
-Android compatible

Am eyeing some models on Suunto too. Especially statistics provided by Movescount is very useful for me
*
With the budget, I think you can look into getting the Suunto Spartan Trainer (or Sport when there is discount). If you don't mind older models that has longer battery life (with GPS on), then you can get the Suunto Ambit 3 at discounted price nowadays.

BTW, I don't think Suunto offers any model with up to 24hours battery life while the GPS mode is on. I think Suunto Spartan Ultra (costs a bomb btw) has a max of 17-18hours. But like you said, if you have your powerbank close, then not a problem. And if for leisure hike, switch on the battery saving mode.

Unless you mean battery life with normal usage (just looking at time LOL), then my Ambit 3 Peak can last more than a week.

Ambit3 Peak seem to be all rounder just nice, just lacking valencell wrist heart rate sensor of which Spartan Trainer/Sport has.

Anyway how long does the charging takes up to ?
*
I've never really paid attention how fast the watch charges but definitely not more than 3 hours.

Anyway, the heart rate belt is usually more accurate, hence the more functional models tend to go with the belt rather than just a wrist sensor.

I m using amazfit about one year....... full charge......can last 16-17 hours, tested at Taiwan trail event, BUTM 100KM and Penang ECO.  For event 100km, I charged it at midpoint, usually 12-13hrs after starting (battery still have 30-40% capacity).

For me ......  it is a quite high CP value watch as I m new in trail run.

You already run 100k, went international, and yet you say you're new to trail run?? blink.gif cry.gif

just every week run 5K on weekends at park. normal running shoes can run trail too right? i guess i can continue jog to train stamina?  hmm.gif
*
Depending on trail type. If technical trails and wet days, I suggest getting suitable shoes for trail running as you may slip, trip, fall because road shoes has less grip to run on dirt and mud.

If you plan to start trail running slowly (not suddenly decide to do ultra), then okay to slowly equip yourself. Before participating in an event, check for requirements - some has mandatory items that you need to carry with you during the run. Be prepared to read about elevation and how to tackle downhills and uphills.

But anyway, I pandai say ny, I also malas want to train for trail running hahaha

guys lately i start to feel minor pain in my right knees when running.

it's not too serious but i worry it might turn worse in the future. i noticed i have this when i start to increase my pace, from average of 8 min/km to gradually lower it down to 6 min/km.

more recently i tried landing more on my forefoot to minimize direct impact to the knees and it helped a little bit. but now i start to feel pain on my shins while the knee pain still come up every now and then.

just wondering you guys' experience with such injuries and how you deal with it. will it simply go away after a while? should i ease back on the pace or alternate between intense and relaxed session? eat more calcium?

usually i run twice a day on morning and evening for about 3km each session from monday to friday. i generally try to push for a better pace each session.

any tips will be appreciated!

hopefully will adapt. because i have a friend who ady retired because his doc said his knees are busted ady and need to stop. so im a bit scared i'll end up like him lol. also this knee thing has been going on for weeks ady and altho nothing severe i dunno if have long term effect.

for now i slow down a bit and do heel strikes and it does feel better. i try to improve the pace using that form and managed to maintain a 7-ish pace. paid a bit extra attention in "soft landings" on the heel and rolling it forward especially when going up and down curbs. for me the point is experimenting with different forms to find which feels right. when i go about not thinking of forms i ended up using the forefeet and that's when the problem starts. if i use back midfoot strike im comfy with when i was using my previous shoes i'll hurt my midfoot section. hence, going heel strike for now.
*
The type of shoes might help? In earlier days when it would hurt my knee going downhill, I changed my shoes to Skechers because of its max cushioning. It gives just the right bounce to avoid pressuring my knees too much. I'm still using Skechers for road, but I have since moved to inov8 for trail.

anyone here familiar with trail running?

Kadang2 macam namati laugh.gif

Usually hiking mana? Day trip or suka bermalam? I notice hikers has a bit of advantage when they join trail runs. So if you are already running road and hiking, then trail running is just combining the best of both worlds.

Usually doctor only advice to rest more and let it heal by itself over time.
the medicine given was just painkiller that stop the pain temporary.

i thought sports doctor will recommend physio/massage?

I think I over exercise...127km including walking and I also did jumping jacks, sprints and futsal in one month. Rookie numbers for you guys but for unfit guy like me probably too much my body can handle.

My current running shoes is from 2013 with minimal cushioning.

New shoes is for my running and also I'm traveling soon and will walk a lot.
*
Okay, so the pain and the new shoe not really related la haha. Yea, I see that you are cross-training but don't tire yourself too much, otherwise very prone to injuries. Take time to recover. If you must follow this strict routine, then may I suggest you take a bit of whey protein to speed up recovery time.

Thanks.
Went to see doc and was given pain killers.
Suspected Achilles tendon tear. Besides surgery what else can be done?
Anyone experienced this? Online, not much info besides rice method, pain killers and surgery
*
This suspicion is based on what? Don't be too quick to summarize that every pain can be fixed through massage, taking meds or surgery. Chill ok.

Sometimes it's just our form of running/workout, putting pressure at the wrong place. Sometimes when warming up, we do our routines wrongly. Sometimes when cooling down, certain routine should be stopped.

Just chill ok. sweat.gif
