Will be joining my first HM this April for SCKLM, hope to finish by 3 hours. What training should I do so far have been running 5k- 8k twice a week only.
*
Okay already la. Now watch your pace and do some speed training.

I took gel when i am in a rush... chasing PB or COT.
Honestly i did feel the surge in energy after taking gels, faster than eating the real food.
Sometimes the caffeine effect of the gels still stays after the race, I can't fell asleep even when i m very tired.

During ultra race, i just walloped anything they offered at the WS. Paid expensive fees, must fully utilize the support and eat la  laugh.gif
*
Maybe my body cannot get familiar to it. So my humble opinion is, gel does not necessarily work for everyone and that is the point I want to put across. thumbsup.gif

Skipping water stations won't save you much time unless you are one of those world class elite runners. Every seconds counts.

Actually it counts leh if you want to PB laugh.gif

QUOTE(Odinn @ Mar 27 2018, 05:19 PM)
Dear runners,

Would like some insight and advice. Plan to attempt my 2nd FM (Penang bridge 2018). I attempted my first last year, SCKLM FM 2017. Didn't finish as I failed to make the last cutoff, KM36. I started breaking down near KM30, legs gave in and couldn't run anymore.

Some background on myself; more of a HM runner, but not a very active or pro runner. I do short runs (1hr) 2-3 times a week, mostly indoors on treadmill. But I participate in HMs instead of 10KMs, with my PB so far bein 2:53hrs (usually finish around 3:10ish hrs). So for FM, I'm only looking at finishing within the cut-off time.

So, my question is, apart from changing my training regime (increasing weekly running distances), is there anything else I should do to prevent that breaking down again at the KM30 mark. I did take energy gels during my first FM attempt, don't remember at which points though. Also drank about 2 cups of water at every water station.

I think it may have been due to the heat at the end. Good thing about the Penang FM is that it'll start much earlier in the morning so should finish before the sun is up and scorching. Also, the elevations in SCKLM probably didn't help me much..

Thanks in advance for the tips and advice.

I am not a fast runner but I've completed an FM before (sub 6). What I did at that time was ensuring I run 10km x 3 times a week. I think I did that for about 4 weeks leading towards the race. Back then, I didn't know what was the right training method. Just hentam only. I know many will say go do LSD! But I didn't. Well at least my method did work for me.

And can you run outdoor instead? 1 hour on treadmill is not equivalent to 1 hour on road.

Yes I probably should start doing LSD more. The most I do even then is 10km, of course doesn't qualify as LSD.
I used to do outdoor twice weekly at my previous workplace, but not so often now. Yeah I know outdoor isn't the same as indoors, so will naturally start incorporating outdoor more.
I don't start out very well early in the mornings, maybe because I don't sleep well the night before. But I think PBIM would be better than SCKLM because less heat from the sun and a flatter terrain.

Anyone here plan to take the kinrara lrt station to the starting point of scklm ?

I saw a runner commented on one of the scklm's posts regarding the lrt station opening at 2am issue, he said that not all lrt (those lrt stations stated by scklm in fb ) actually opens on time at 2am and turns out he had to rushed to bandar tasik selatan and almost missed the flag off time to fm

Is this true ? Because i stay in bandar kinrara and i actually plan to go from kinrara lrt station but if it didn't operate on time then i guess im screwed  doh.gif

(btw its my first time joining scklm, so i really hope past scklm fm runners can guide me on the transportation to the starting line)
*
You just need to know which one is open, the distance and approximate time that it will take to arrive at Masjid Jamek. The key is to park at an LRT station, so you could as well drive further from your house (and nearer to race venue), then take the LRT.

I've decided to take it slow and go 50km for janda baik ultra and end the year with 70km malaysia ultra trail festival.

If I survive that then can consider 100km for next year lol.

some questions..

- is there a lot of difference between running say, 42km on road vs trail?
- MUTF got tons of mandatory items including things like first aid kit, emergency blankets, reflective vest, headlamps etc. do all of them really really really need to be brought and is enforced tightly? or is it more of a guideline if ur seriously contending for the top placement and a miss here and there is okay if ur not really competitive despite the warning?
- also do you lug all of the stuff along the race?

- is there a lot of difference between running say, 42km on road vs trail?
A LOT. Typically, trail has higher elevation gain (JBU was approx 1900m last year). Some trails are single, technical trails, some are wide logging trails. Also a lot of trail run happens in a mix of sand, gravel, tarmac environment- your choice of shoe can make a difference if you are prone to injury.

Mandatory items are compulsory to show to them when you want to collect your bib. I do believe for reflective vest depends on your hydration bag - some bags are already well-reflected. Or you can just add reflective tapes to the bag.

- also do you lug all of the stuff along the race?
Yes, but i minimize my first aid kit and sweater/poncho depends on weather.

Most mandatory items may not seem essential. E.g. headlamp. You think you are only running during the day because flag off is 7am and COT is 7pm. So why bother carrying a headlamp, right? Please change the way we think of mandatory items. They become essential items if we get lost in the trail and have to spend extra hours in the trail. Then your emergency blanket becomes necessary when the night gets cold. You know, along that line. laugh.gif

aaaah great advices thanks sifus!

@silvadesk

- so for some items like reflective vest no need to follow bulat2? as long as have decent reflective equipments can be accepted?
indeed. so if let say they say must have headlamp and blinker, and your headlamp comes with blinker, no need to have 2 separate items dy.

- ah i see. basically safety-wise need to prepare just like when you go for long hikes. im guessing unlike regular runs most part of the route would be unmanned and unmarked so theres higher chance to stray off the route.

- im very interested to have training session with you guys but probably not this weekend. my legs got injured recently and need to let it recover until mid next week. can we have it next weekend instead?
if you want to run with us, just PM me ok.

also i dont even have trail shoes yet. i'll try to at least get those by the next week. im pretty lacking in equipments but i plan to acquire them slowly within these few months. same can be said with my training as well laugh.gif

Hi, guys. Anyone using Strava here?
I notice that the activity information from Movecounts transfer to Strava have huge different. So which app provide infos is more accurate? I personally think Strava infos is more accurate. But what you guys think?
Sometimes my activity can't turn it into movie in Movescount app due to error but Strava still able to turn it into movie. Anyone here experience this issue before?

Suunto user here~

which info difference are you referring to? there are 2 ways of tracking time on strava - moving time/elapsed time - so depending on what you're seeing. if you are referring to elevation gain, it is because their algorithm is slightly different but the difference should not be huge as you mention. i'll always refer to strava though, for consistency.

yes you need to bring all the stuffs along the race, thats why you need to buy a hydration pack/running vest. usually they're not cheap, a UD running vest usually costs around rm400.
*
i just buy aonijie vest which is less than 100bucks and reuse my gatorade water bottles. survived many ultras dy. #cheapskate laugh.gif laugh.gif

Early morning runs. 7am/730am. KDCF, Kemensah trail or Setia Alam trail. I heard Salomon is having a running session at Kemensah on the 15th. You should go try run there.

Elevation gain difference still acceptable level. Not very big gap difference.
Activity completion time got few hours difference & calories burnt got few thousand difference @.@
*
Activity time depends on what you set on Strava as the Run Type. By default, the Run Type is set as RUN, and it gives you MOVING TIME. If you set it as RACE, it gives you ELAPSED TIME. Quite dumb la, because even not race also, I would rather see Elapsed Time. But that's just how Strava is.
