Is a medical check up required before we enter a job in research?

If I graduate with a bio medical science degree, and i want to work in any research or lab department, do they require a medical check up?

And if so, will Hep. B cause me not to get the job?

Thanks in advance =)

It depends on company, if not mistaken.

Most big corporations require a routine medical checkup as a standard hiring procedure, regardless of the industry. Very routine stuff: eye tests, urine tests, chest xray, blood pressure, etc. As far as I know the basic medical check ups does not include a blood test which is what would be required to detect hepatitis-B.

But in my opinion, if you have a medical condition, it is best to be honest with your employer.

i dunno others, but for my company, the medical check up include blood test, urine test, eye test, ear test, xray, ECG ( hear rate). I think quite complete. But my other frens said that their medical checkup only basic screening checks, no blood test.

And I know which company is doing that too! tongue.gif

Anyway, it depends on the company. I went the whole shebang (like Joanalooidog (?)) and also just a urine and doctor check for my current one.

There is plenty of room here for the person doing the hiring to use judgement so it really pointless for me to give advice other than there is usually no official policy that somebody with some medical condition has to be disqualified, assuming the condition does not affect your ability to do the job. One big reason for the lack of standard policies is because the companies do not want to be seen as discriminative (lawsuits are expensive).

So because there are no official policies, this question is highly subjective and depends very much on the person evaluating your application so there is no straight answer. So if you want an answer it is "maybe".

.....nothing to say, can u plz list down al lthe companies which has Hep B as a requirement??

I think u need to be honest loh, before u do medical checkup, jsut tell ur hiring company, and convince them that u will be very careful, your Hep B is under control and won affect ur performance. Since u need to went thru the probation period, u can say that if ur HEP B is worsening and affect ur performance, just fire u loh, bla bla bla............

well if you have Hep B, The company might be cautious in hiring you cos they would look at the fact that medical they might have to cover, ur performance, and also should you visit the hospital how would they get a replacement. U're basically in the higher risk category should the company hire you.

If the doctor never ask you, you want to tell him you have Hep B ? As i mentioned earlier, i never see any company require Hep B checking before employment biggrin.gif

I don't see Hep B will be a restricting factor.

Agreed. You don't see it in Agilent, Avago or even Intel medical checkup sheet biggrin.gif

There is a likelihood since you are in the biomedical industry.

Those are semicon companies; TS stated he/she is in the biomedical research field and Hep-B is transmittable via bodily fluids which may or may not affect the results of his work.

It still depends on the company itself. It's quite subjective ...

This is a special case. I guess it does not apply to non-biomedical field. If you work in electronic factory, you do not need that. biggrin.gif

I'm sure in biomedical field, you'll be wearing personal protective equipment or attire, you won't be working with a naked body (normal working casual/formal/office attire), hands (gloves are needed), mouth and nose (mouth cover - not sure what it's called is required).
