Guys wta those using oversea platform to trade US, do you have to pay tax???
*
Everyone pay tax even overseas. Only difference is local charges you more in fees such as dividend fee, expensive comission, markup exchange rate, quarterly fees, TT fees. You can see them as a form of secondary tax by your Malaysian broker on top of the first tax by US govt.

There's only dividend tax by US govt. We don't have capital gain tax in Malaysia. Unless you are a trader full time then yes there might be some Income tax.
Dividend tax was suppose to come this year but push back to 2025 if I am not wrong.

The USD exchange rate has been crazy recently, unfortunately my average cost to exchange USD is relatively high as I only entered in recent years. I only buy index fund but yikes it is still painful to look at. The market need to have outstanding performance to compensate the loss from foreign exchange, then it will only generate a meaningful return.

Anyone mind sharing your experience on the impact of foreign exchange rate on your portfolio?

Think long term. Don't look at short term Forex movent.

Don't look at the upside. Look at the downside. Can you stomach if the stock swing the same amount the other way?

The trick is buy when it's down. Majority of people scared to buy when it's down. If you want to ride the wave up. You need to buy when it's down. If it's down more, and if the drop is significant like 10%, just buy more. If it's like 1-2% drop, don't bother.

At last closing price, mkt capitalization is USD43.57 billion. But definitely overvalued: since they now focusing on profitability, I find Shopee expensive compared to Lazada: they don't give that many free shipping coupons the way Lazada does. I shopping less with Shopee and more with Lazada.....and if other shoppers feel like I do, their turnover is going to decrease. I looking to short it tonight if it rises.
*
I long time never shop at shitpee already. Due to their insincere free shipping. What the hell give give free shopping and still need to pay for shipping? Better I use Lazada where free shipping = really free shipping.

Well, SIVB is halted from further trading. FDIC decided to close it since it can't raise enough capital.
The message from CEO yesterday that everything is fine is really everything IS NOT fine.

Why the FED no ball?

Kill the bank and hundred of hundred venture companies die. Unemployment rises faster.

Inflation is down fast, Jpowell's mission accomplishes, the interest rate hike stops and the market is green again.

Ain't it perfect?
*
Govt bailout again. At this rate all banks just default and govt always there to bail them out.

should I buy some stocks now like S&P500, Amazon etc or wait?

Prices keep going up these few days. Feel they will crash back down again soon. Due to this news:
https://www.barchart.com/story/news/1559468...-pressures-ease
*
One simple question why are you not buying when it's down and why do you want to buy now when it's on the way up?

Only you can answer the question. I was buying on the way down and now I enjoy the ride up and continue collecting cash on the sidelines.

I am doubtful in investing in US stock market. My feeling will go up and down like roller coaster looking at the chart daily.
*
Why are you looking at charts? Don't look at charts unless you are trader. If you are investor look at fundamentals. If you dont know or don't want to look at charts look at fundamentals, just buy S&P500. For me very easy. When things are red, buy When things are all green, I ignore the market.

All my wealth have always been make in red market. You name it. Microsoft, amd, Tesla, abnb, BlackRock, visa , unp, Adobe, Google, crowdstrike all bought when market is red. The redder it is the happier I am as I get to scoop stocks on discount.

just curious

do u guys buy some short-term bond etf using the idle money thats sitting to be deployed to buy stocks

if yes, which etf u all buy?

the dividends from etf is also subjected to 30% tax right?

the yield seems very attractive now, if 5.3% gross yield, minus 30% tax still got around 3.7%

Just use put your money into MMF tax free. You can choose Fullerton USD cash A account or CSOP USD money market fund.
Choose either Tiger or moomoo to park your money.

Any broker to recommend? I'm asking whether we can transfer out the share, but I would think there is some fee. So pity be B40, no people want to play with you
*
Just use interactive broker. Yes can transfer. I think called ACAT transfer. Takes time though.

QUOTE(Hansel @ Sep 26 2023, 03:26 PM)
In the other forum, you mentioned IB will be announcing this too because this is an MAS directive, not a broker-specific initiative.
*
Based off some Singaporean guy. Not sure if it's true. Another rumour I heard is Charles Schwab got no license to operate in Singapore.
"Just called and spoke to one of the customer service officers.

He mentioned this accredited investor requirement is imposed on them by MAS and they are unable to transfer our account to TD Ameritrade US as it's not allowed by MAS.

He also mentioned that they will be one of the first few to inform us and other US brokerages will be restricted by this MAS regulation as well 😢"

QUOTE(jasontoh @ Sep 26 2023, 03:28 PM)
What about Firstrade? IBKR still have some charges if we are trading?
*
First trade under US jurisdiction. Won't be affected if it's MAS directive.
