Hey guys,

I believe I have a serious problem of anxiety everytime I need to give public speech or interact with people superior than me. I knew everyone has it too but I am convinced that mine is abnormal. Everytime when I need to talk on the stage, i will have a very intense feel of puking and I tried all sorts of way to control it. One example is that I dont eat before presentation because I felt that it will induce mucus in my throat and forcing me to throw up.

Any guys face the same issue here? If so, how do you solve it? Did you visit any psychologist/psychiatrist? kindly recommend some good one! icon_question.gif

Thanks for the recommendation bro. But just to clarify, is mindfulness meditation the kind of meditation practiced by Buddhist?

It's very similar, just different techniques. Mindfulness meditation is generally a western, scientific way of describing it after university researchers began studying the practices of Buddhist monks, and perhaps other types too like Hindu priests.

There are many techniques, just keep an open mind and explore which one works best for you. Don't be judgemental on which is 'better' than the other as this would be counterproductive, just realize that some may be more suitable for you personally.

While there are many, in general you can start your search on the topic by googling the following:

Loving Kindness Meditation (Metta) by Matthieu Ricard
MBSR by Jon-Kabat Zinn
MBCT by Mark Williams
Headspace by Andy Puddicombe

Look up REBT. This is perhaps the branch of counseling I subscribe to and often I think it has profound results on my behaviour.

These are a set of techniques/guidelines designed by the respective practitioners.

They all have books/articles that you can find via Google.

The first one might involve the use of some 'spiritually inclined' terminology due to context but it doesn't matter as it's the technique that matters.

The last one is an app that imparts guidance.

Entirely 'science-based', if you feel more comfortable with that term would be MBSR and MBCT, as those were designed by well-known professors.

But recognize that even the science based ones partially involved scientific studies into Eastern religious practices. Nothing wrong about it.

TS,

Before convincing yourself that you have a medical condition, why not practice public speaking - there is no other better place that Toastmasters. These guys know how to do it, and they know how to overcome the challenges.

I suggest you find a Toastmasters club nearby your place, go for a few sessions as a guest, then see how you feel. If you're not comfortable in one club you can always go try out another club.

Thanks for your suggestions.

But i thought the point of toastmaster (or overcoming your fear) is to escape from comfort zone? Can i still learn these the comfortable way?

Yes, the whole point is to get out of your comfort zone and to get used to public speaking.
What I meant in my previuos post is that if you don't like how things are done (or timing or location) in one Toastmasters club you can always attend as a guest at another location.

Give it a try, most of the people I've met from Toastmasters are very sociable and helpful. They're also very supportive of newbies.

Believe it or not, you have mental blocks that you must dissolve. So you need a therapist like me who need to assess your conditions first.

If you are keen to talk more, please page me privately.

You can try CPCS in HELP University Damansara Heights or Subang 2 campus.
