Yeah, real world issues might help. Another way is probably through reading. Read more books in English. Or if books bore you read magazines in English. Listen to English songs.. Or maybe. Take up extra English classes outside of college to help you through. Once you get the hang of it, English isn't so bad. It helps alot. I could maybe suggest a place for you to learn English that's pretty good. ERICAN. Go google it. Aiya.... Sap sap sui one.,.... As long as you have the determination. rclxms.gif

it's hard to teach teenagers reading BOOKS. go ahead and watch some english drama series or movies u like. get them english subtitle. also listen to english songs, get LRC lyrics. hmm.. i think this is very useful. also do use the english u learn in ur daily life. good luck.

* find out ur interest, get them all in english language. eg. if u like comic, get english comic.

Lazy want to read everything so I'll just post my experience mastering English here:

Phase 1:
1. Strengthen your vocab. You need to increase the number of English words you know.
Start by reading The Star. Write down every word you don't know in your vocab book. Get a good dictionary. I'll recommend Oxford's Advanced Learner's Dictionary. This process will be very painful in the beginning. You may find up to 5, 10 words or more per article. (Most people give up at this stage)

I still have my old vocab book. It's evolved a lot for the past 10 years. I can see my vocab really grow a lot, as much as I did. From Standard 5 to Year 2 uni now. I'm still adding words to it.

2. Speak English more often. Mix with English-speaking people who will not laugh at you. You need a lot of ballz here. Very painful process too. But you will learn very very fast if you muka tebal banyak.

Phase 2:
1. Once you can understand most words in the newspapers easily (maybe only learn 1 or 2 words per article), you can now start reading books. Try the classics. Treasure Island, Moby d*** (why is it censored!?), Sherlock Holmes, Around the World in 80 Days, etc. You will find learning new words here enjoyable. You will notice that you make less and less grammatical errors when you write at this stage.

2. Speak more English with others, watch more English language movies/shows. You should be able to catch up much faster now.

Phase 3:
1. You should enter essay-writing competitions. But I didn't do it.  tongue.gif  I had my share of writing in Englist, EST, MUET, etc.

2. Enter public speaking competitions. This stage will push you to your limits. Need the most amount of ballz here. No matter you win or lose, the experience you gain will be invaluable.

If you do all of the above, minimum you'll have fluent mastery of English, and maximum, beyond native mastery. This is what I went through personally. And one of the rewards is a Band 6 in MUET (Not to boast, but to lend some credibility to this post). It's a very painful 10-year+ process but it's extremely rewarding. And I'm still learning. TS can stop at any stage he wants. Or ignore this post.

Superb advice. I'm somewhere in between phase 1 and 2. And it's chinese I'm learning. The processes are the same, so I can appreciate the difficulty you're talking about.

To improve your grammar in writing, those grammar books do help.

Grammar is something you should strive to internalise- i.e. thinking in gramatically correct english. That's how it works for people with fluent english.

I wholly agree with the point that self-confidence is vital in this sense.
I am not able to speak Cantonese fluently, my friend would certainly laugh at me for my poor Cantonese.

Yet, there was once I met some new friends in a camp,
most of them spoke in Cantonese, no one knew me there,
so I brought up my courage to speak in Cantonese with them.
Surprisingly, I could speak very fluently.
After a few days I told them that I was not a Cantonese and
cant speak fluently either, all of them looked at me surprisingly, feeling that's impossible as I was able to converse fluent Cantonese with them.

That's the thing, self-confidence.
Do not have the mindset that you are lousy in certain language
and lose your courage.
No one knows whether you can speak it fluently except yourself.
Just pull up your socks and speak it out !

Btw, I still do not have the courage to speak Cantonese with my close friends. ><
Sorry to be so contradicting but it's a personal experience. lolz

I think you're ridiculously modest. But in anycase I agree whole heartedly - confidence is key to get those ppl speaking in your target language to use your target language only with you.

the most effective way is by speaking in english as often as possible as well as reading more useful books.

but here's a fun way, i gave this tips to many of my friends who asked the same question as you:

-listen to english songs, look up for the lyric, find meaninga of the words that u do not know, sing a long to it and hv fun. biggrin.gif

start by doin sumthing simple and sumthing dat u like
4 exmple listen 2 english songs, get the lyrics and understand d whole story by refering at ur dictionary....this way, not only u can improve ur language, but it can widen ur vocab also....=)
but the caution is, careful in choosing d songs... try 2 look for evergreen song...their english is better if u compared 2 d "hiphop" songs nowadays......
gud luck!!

Read the English newspaper more often. Watch movies and read books. You could also carry a pocket notebook around and write down words that you don't understand when you read or listen. Then check the meaning when you get home.

u r right, thanks for ur info..

What yu need is basic. Start from basic. Unless yu want to crash course, of course. Wait till yu do presentation in the real working environment. Yu'll be even laughed at. Did yu know a poor presentation can cost dearly for yu or your co. of landing a project?.

Since the groundworks can be laid upon, there's less worries in that department. The key issue is your communication skills. Enriching your vocabularies is a good start. Try converse in English whenever and wherever possible.

ok... english...

What is ur first language? Writing is very crucial especially when u want to further study in tertiary level or even though in working field. But y must u mix up english usage with ur thinking? Act, I know every could be a good writer, (if u r writing in ur 1st language). Try think this way... think the point 1st then only proceed. My teacher used to teach me to start up a writing with a point must have, of course a point, explanation or elaboration adn some example. And it's work! Dun ever think about ur english 1st, the thing is whether or not u dare to write more... The moment u can write... the moment u will feel confident... My advice, write as much without thinking of the grammar usage (Dont mistaken, Im not saying to IGNORE the grammar, just for u, the first step is to practice writing.)

Trust me, when u r surrounded in english environment, (eg u r in university), ur english would be better than expected.
