UI: phone system still very unstable, even after two firmware upgrades
At the time of this review, the latest phone software version for the M600i was R4A002 - and Sony Ericsson has stuck with this version for quite some time already, which probably means that they feel it is "stable" enough for use.
But after having used the M600i extensively since the upgrade, I am still finding stability issues with the phone.  The biggest problem was with the phone restarting itself sporadically (at least once every 2-3 days) - and the reason given being "to improve overall phone performance".  Yeah... fine, but just not when I'm in the middle of doing something - and without any sort of notification whatsoever!
However, when compared to the previous major release, R3A004, the upgraded M600i was indeed more stable (and problem-free) than before.

Usability: slower-than-expected response times from smartphone UI
The overall responsiveness of the M600i UI is no comparison to the lightning speeds of the P910i.  Not to say the M600i was unbearable when it came to its use - but this will probably come as a major shock to those existing UIQ 2.1 users who've grown accustomed to the finer workings of their smartphone device.
This will be something that Sony Ericsson needs to work on improving.  "Tolerable" is how I'd describe the responsiveness of the UIQ 3 platform at this stage.
*
Not sure about other problems, but the above 2, has been addressed in the latest firmware. Navigation is quite speedy and it seldom restarts compared to previous firmwares. So I guess its really improving by the day.

I've got no problems at all with my W950i. smile.gif

Apparently phones with a metal finishing is the rage nowadays.

The pics are not showing anyway, so here goes. smile.gif

And yes, I agree with sunauto, the M600i is much better looking at this stage. biggrin.gif

Guys, can the UIQ3 support applications from UIQ2?

Added on February 28, 2007, 1:28 pmAny free Instant Messaging applications for M600i?
*
Most apps cannot be used on UIQ 3 due to Symbian signed requirement on UIQ 3.

I used Agile Messenger while using my W950i / P990i.

Yeah, forgot to tell you guys, the Magix Ringtone Maker comes free with the PDA Essentials magazine sold in MPH, the price of the magazine is RM42 something if I'm not mistaken, the software given is a full version and you can use it to make your ringtones louder but to take note if it's too loud, there will be cracking sound from your hp speaker.
*
Which Issue of PDA Essentials?

Does anyone use an external GPS device with P990? Can anyone recommend one? smile.gif

Not sure if I should make a separate topic as I'm fairly new to external GPS devices (and GPS itself), but is TomTom a good mapping software to use with P990?

Most importantly, does TomTom have Malaysian maps?
*
There's no supporting Malaysian maps for Symbian UIQ yet. So even if you buy an external GPSr, you can't utilize GPS.

ooo...really no GPS support UIQ for Malaysian maps? hmm.gif
hmmm...when would it be available... rolleyes.gif
is this a sign to go for Nokia model? icon_rolleyes.gif
*
I'd suggest that if GPS is your priority, drop Nokia from your list. It does not use the latest SiRF III Star GPS chipset which is the best in the market. And it does make a difference in what chipset is being used.

A question for all of the experts here, how did you guys put on the +Today calender in the main desktop area?
*
IIRC, that feature is only available in M600i and W950i.

It wasn't there in my ex-P990i.

I beg to differ, I find UIQ much easier to use than WM.

This I agree. But WM has more 3rd party apps support and that made me switch to WM and left the UIQ 3.0 scene.

QUOTE(shockk @ May 8 2007, 07:13 PM)
Any reason why you chose Nokia now? biggrin.gif

I think Sony's software is much more pleasing on the eyes and more functional. But in terms of stability, i definitely think Nokia's software is much more refined.
*
The reason I left UIQ 3.0, is the instability of the OS (at the time I owned the P990i), and also the lack of 3rd party applications, as compared to WM and also Symbian Series 60, whereby continuously you can find new apps being developed.

I don't agree that SE's OS is much more pleasing on the eyes, as I feel both are almost the same, just that it's an individual preference and I happen to like both. Functionality, UIQ 3.0 wins only because it has touchscreen. Other than that, Series 60's functionality is no less functional than UIQ 3.0, and in fact I find a lot of apps very useful, and that's absent from UIQ 3.0.

And I've said it above, instability of UIQ 3.0 is the reason I left it. Having tried both the P990i and W950i convinced me that I had to switch. smile.gif

The above is my personal reason for going to Nokia, after leaving it for >2 years. I'm starting to get disappointed at SE phones for churning out phone after phone bearing similiar features with no significant breakthrough, like they're going Nokia's way some years back. Nokia, although no significant breakthrough as well, but still managed to introduce new stuff into the market sooner than other brands, like a 5MP camera phone, and integrated GPS like in the N95. Form factor wise, the N93i is a very stunning looking, yet no less functional Symbian phone. Look at the K810i, it's almost the same as the K800i, albeit the slimmer casing. Why can't they come out with something with more differences? Change a casing and market it as a new model? I believe they can do better than that.

The above is just my opinion, and is not meant to offend any Symbian UIQ users. smile.gif Hey, I was once a Symbian UIQ 3.0 user too. smile.gif
