Hey do you guys know what freq range the common 2-way radios available in msia are on? PMR446? UHF CB at 477MHz? FRS?
Are they officially legal? What's the max power output?
thanks!

QUOTE(mitodna @ Feb 18 2008, 10:05 PM) yeah 2 signatures FYI - for B license holder you are permitted to work on only 4 bands thats the 10M, 6M, 2M and 70cm. kuala lumpur depends on class, for class B, max is 50 , class A is 400 , correct me if I am wrong HF = 28 - 29Mhz, 50 - 54Mhz VHF = 144 - 148Mhz UHF = 430 - 440 Mhz. with a max of 50w on all these bands allocated for class B ... k now the question from eug, CB radio? CB radio is on 11m band ... thats 27Mhz, this is band is open to everyone, but still you will need a written permission to use this band from MCMC, at a max of 5watt - but with the correct antenna and good propagation, i think u can reach half the globe! heard from some ham friends, u can get this set from kedai potong, half cut from japan will have this set, very cheap - bout 150 - 200 per set, but will require some sort of fixing ... and the antenna issue ... for those FRS radios operating at the 477.***Mhz range, was initially open to everyone, where u can just buy and use it, approved in 2000, but was revoked back in 2004 or 2005 i think ... not really revoked but recategorized as PRS(Personal Radio Services) but would depend which radio set u using - sets from China are from 409-410MHz wherelse those that came from US would be on the 465-467MHz(correct me if i am wrong) check this for more info http://www.mcmc.gov.my/registers/cma/Class...BI-register.pdf do some searching before asking and this is off-topic! Added on February 18, 2008, 11:36 pmand yeah for Class A holders, they can operate up to 100w on those bands and some up to 400w ... which we shall not go in to ... There is also UHF CB which is in the 476 to 477MHz range. QUOTE(earl-ku @ Feb 19 2008, 01:34 AM) heard from some ham friends, u can get this set from kedai potong, half cut from japan will have this set, very cheap - bout 150 - 200 per set, but will require some sort of fixing ... and the antenna issue ... I've worked 27MHz before and you really do get a lot of range - but only when there's good skip. 27MHz is useless for urban communications, and 27MHz cb radios don't have ctcss or DCS which makes it even more useless when the front-end gets overrun by local transmitters - you get so much interference breaking squelch that you just switch it off!QUOTE(earl-ku) for those FRS radios operating at the 477.***Mhz range, was initially open to everyone, where u can just buy and use it, approved in 2000, but was revoked back in 2004 or 2005 i think ... not really revoked but recategorized as PRS(Personal Radio Services) So it looks like both of the above are officially illegal - from the link you pasted, the only legal bands are the PRS 477MHz band, and the 433MHz short-range communications band which looks similar to the LIPD band. but would depend which radio set u using - sets from China are from 409-410MHz wherelse those that came from US would be on the 465-467MHz(correct me if i am wrong) Radios from the US would be on the FRS band, which is between 462 - 467 with a 5MHz gap in between. GMRS is not very popular nowadays, as FRS radios are more readily available. Both would officially be illegal too. I was looking at 'proper' radios in LYP and elsewhere and nobody carried one that could do 477MHz! They all ended at 460 or 470MHz. So much for having a class assignment. QUOTE(earl-ku) check this for more info I tried to search - but couldn't find anything. As you can see above, the licence-free radio situation in Malaysia is quite a mess! There are 410MHz radios, 462MHz radios, 477MHz radios, and there's no easy way to search for the official legal band (i.e. with google!). None of the programmable radios that I came across in shops are able to operate on PRS freqs either.http://www.mcmc.gov.my/registers/cma/Class...BI-register.pdf do some searching before asking and this is off-topic! Now that I know that the Malaysian licence-free band is called PRS, even googling for "PRS frequencies Malaysia" doesn't return a list of frequencies, or anything describing the band. This thread would have all the amateur people already following it, and who else better to ask questions like these, hence my post. A one-line reply would have answered it. Your link was just what I was looking for, thanks! This post has been edited by eug: Feb 19 2008, 11:04 AM |

Your link was just what I was looking for, thanks! now the thing is that the term license free doesn't really exist here in MY ... not a single portion on the frequency is available for that sole purpose, even most of the freq allocated for amateur usage, are actually allocated as only secondary usage, primary would be for commercial usage. those prs radios, i believe there are some from Midlands which operates at the MY PRS freq, never seen them before. i have never seen these CB radios before, but i was told they have a few channels only, say on a CB set, there is gonna be only 3 or maybe 4 pre-assigned channels, and with a proper antenna, 5watt can get u very very far, easiest would be Indonesia and some say Sweden with good and proper propagations ... Added on February 19, 2008, 12:42 pmand yeah, never never get radios from that shop in Lowyat, cut throat ... This post has been edited by earl-ku: Feb 19 2008, 12:42 PM |

Probably because Aus/NZ isn't as big as the US! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHF_CB QUOTE(earl-ku) now the thing is that the term license free doesn't really exist here in MY ... not a single portion on the frequency is available for that sole purpose, even most of the freq allocated for amateur usage, are actually allocated as only secondary usage, primary would be for commercial usage. If a class assignment allows use of a PRS radio without requiring the user to get a personal radio licence, i would consider that 'licence-free'. i.e. anyone can go out and buy a radio and use it, no need to apply for a licence.QUOTE(earl-ku) those prs radios, i believe there are some from Midlands which operates at the MY PRS freq, never seen them before. Mine had the standard 40 channels. You can get radios with 120 channels, but they're really just 40 regular channels plus 80 upper and lower sideband channels on the same freqs. I've never seen a 4 channel HF CB radio... apart from some toy ones. i have never seen these CB radios before, but i was told they have a few channels only, say on a CB set, there is gonna be only 3 or maybe 4 pre-assigned channels, and with a proper antenna, 5watt can get u very very far, easiest would be Indonesia and some say Sweden with good and proper propagations ...
