Against major hits like that not having bomb shelters is just as deadly. But its safer than staying outside and the idea I suppose is that even if the building falls down the sheltered people have a chance of staying intact and wait for rescuers.

The newest model HDBs are built stronger than they look, each flat even has a designated panic room which can withstand shocks better than the rest of the flat.

Be that as it may, I find modern urban warfare paints a rather similar grim picture: ruins of building hiding snipers, small teams of soldiers getting lost, burned-out armored vehicles destroyed by hidden anti-tank teams and mines/IEDs, small-scale ambushes coming in left and right, civilians hiding/fleeing being caught in the crossfire, soldiers tossing grenades into rooms full of civilians, indiscriminate bombing and artillery shelling reducing whole neighborhoods into piles of ruined rubble, smoke rising from many areas of the city, stuff like that.

oh certainly. But SG govt do try to minimise casualties. Certainly this system would save many lives from a Hamas style desultory bombardment.

War in a truly dense urban terrain will be brutal. Ukraine is the closest we get to modern war in modern city and the urban area is a meat grinder, thats why Russkies just stand off and bombard the hell out of the Ukrainians.

Soldiers to step up patrols, training to combat terror

user posted image

More armed soldiers will be seen patrolling public areas islandwide as Singapore scales up its resources to thwart possible terrorist attacks.

The move was the most eye-catching among a series of measures announced by Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen yesterday to fortify Singapore against the escalating threat.

Currently, round-the-clock patrols by soldiers are carried out only at key installations such as Jurong Island and Changi Airport.

Speaking during his ministry's Budget debate, the minister said the action is aimed at ensuring that the military can deal with orchestrated attacks - like those carried out in Paris last year and more recently in Brussels - in hot spots such as MRT stations, shopping malls and town centres.

The move signals Singapore's redoubled efforts to counter terrorism, with soldiers joining forces with their Home Team colleagues against this threat. To better equip units of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) for this role, Dr Ng also announced other measures, including:

user posted image

Building a "high density" mock city, complete with high-rise buildings and road networks, to conduct "highly realistic" counterterrorism training;

Boosting the firepower of its special forces troops, the first responders in counterterrorism and other contingency operations, by equipping the Special Operations Task Force with better tactical sensors such as palm-size unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) suitable for the urban landscape;

Sharing intelligence information with the Home Team and jointly coming up with operational command systems in order to bring to bear the "full strength" of Singapore's security capabilities.

The new moves come just a day after Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam spelt out measures like increasing the size of Emergency Response Teams to deal with simultaneous attacks on multiple sites and strengthening the protection of hard and soft targets.

Dr Ng also said that Singapore is an "attractive target" for militant groups such as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

"Every shopping mall, every crowded place is an opportunity for violent extremists to target innocent civilians and cause as much suffering and mayhem as possible," he said.

Even if ISIS is defeated, another group will rise and take its place.

"They may not be in Iraq and Syria but there are a host of failed states that an extremist group can gain geographical foothold and take the resources, whether it's Libya or other countries.

"In cyber attacks and biological pandemics, Ground Zero can be anywhere," said Dr Ng.

During his 50-minute speech, Dr Ng also touched on how Singapore is faced with "troubled peace", which has now become the new normal in a globalised world.

He noted that Singapore also has to grapple with rising tensions in the region, for instance, in the South China Sea, which are the result of strategic rivalry and rising nationalism.

Defence analyst William Choong said that it is timely and necessary to exploit the combined training efforts and capabilities of the Home Team and the SAF.

Dr Choong, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said: "It represents a closing of ranks between both entities. Having them work in sync and in tandem will serve as a strong deterrent to anyone who is interested in launching an attack on Singapore."

ISIS vehicles hunted & destroyed by Russian Mi-28 helicopters in Syrian desert (MILITARY VIDEO)

QUOTE
The Mi-28NE reportedly use Ataka (NATO designation AT-9 Spiral-2) anti-tank guided missiles with shaped charge warheads, designed to eliminate armored vehicles; the pickups and trucks of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists are pierced through. A number of people can be seen running away from the vehicles in the midst of an attack

The nature of the explosions attest to the fact that the pilots opted for 9М120F missiles armed with combined effects, high-explosive fragmenting and thermobaric ordnance

US Army to Spend Big on More Than 3000 German Sniper Rifle

user posted image

The contract lists the maximum price as $44.5 million and provides the Army with the option to order up to 3,643 rifles. The Army seeks to replace the M110 with a gun that does not physically resemble a classic sniper rifle, according to an Army Times report.

The German company's US subsidiary won the sale over seven other bids, enabling it to supplement the Army's 7.62 mm M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System guns with the new gas-operated 7.62mm Heckler & Koch G28, Designated Marksman Rifle. The gun, weighing 12.8 pounds, has a maximum length of 42.6 inches, is 13.4 inches in height, and has a barrel length of 16.6 inches.

Heckler & Koch provided no price data for military-grade firearm sales. However, the G28 Designated Marksman Rifle is based on the MR380, a civilian variant of the Heckler & Koch model 417 rifle. The MR380 price tag in the US market ranges from $3,000 to $4,000.

Currently, only 30 of the new sniper kits have been purchased.

nice and well protected, but I'm surprised they couldn't find a 4x4 and 6x6 family with common parts instead of buying 2 chasses. Usually SAF got good eye for this kind of cost efficient detail laugh.gif I'm also surprised, why not just make more use of the Terrex? Its not like they're committed to doing very much elsewhere

Rebels make huge gains along the Turkish-Syrian border – Map update

user posted image

A few hours ago, combined rebel forces of the Free Syrian Army, Fatah coalition (Islamist rebel groups) and Jabhat al-Nusra (Syrian al-Qaeda group) captured al-Rai town in northern Aleppo from ISIS troops. Thus, Islamist rebels have now captured more than a dozen villages in less than a week along the Turkish border.

Today’s battle was reportedly heavily reinforced and aided by Turkish artillery pieces that pounded ISIS positions in and around al-Rai throughout the day. Meanwhile, other reports indicate that ISIS fighters have been gradually withdrawing their forces from the region, as to reinforce other vulnerable frontlines.

In fact, these advances come despite rebels in northern Aleppo being entirely cut off from the rest of rebel-held Syria, thus creating problems in terms of new recruits, logistics and redeployments. However, the rebel offensive has come into effect through Turkish support and ISIS commanders down-prioritizing the area.

Now, rebels will either try to strike further east along the border or strike southwest and carry out a pincer manuever towards the rebel stronghold of Mare’, thereby cutting off many ISIS fighters and expanding the rebel enclave in northern Aleppo.

Amazing pictures show Special Forces soldiers flying through the air and huge explosions ripping through the Saudi desert in a military training exercise

QUOTE
Members of Saudi security forces have been spotted demonstrating their considerable skills during a military exercise in the desert west of Riyadh in Saudi Arabia.

One astonishing image appears to show two men wearing black balaclavas and wielding massive guns leaping from the top of two moving police cars.

Another photograph shows a huge explosion in the background as a cavalcade of military jeeps rattle past, and another shows military personnel dangling precariously from ropes attached to helicopters.

The final image rather bizarrely shows a member of the Saudi security forces having bricks broken over his head during a military exercise.

On Tuesday Islamic State militants shot a senior Saudi security officer dead west of capital Riyadh.

The Western-allied kingdom, the world's top oil exporter, has been hit by a spate of deadly shootings and bombings targeting security forces or its Shi'ite Muslim minority since last year, many of them claimed by Islamic State.

Saudi state news agency SPA quoted an interior ministry spokesman as saying that the officer, Colonel Kitab Majed al-Hammadi, was shot dead in the al-Arja area of al-Dawadimi province west of the Saudi capital.

How Israel Wants To Soup Up Its Fleet Of F-35s

user posted image

QUOTE
They want to continue this legacy with the F-35. Part of this initiative now includes the ability to externally modify their new stealth jets with the addition of conformal fuel tanks
QUOTE
Conformal fuel tanks give a fighter jet more fuel load with minimal performance penalties and do not occupy precious weapon stations and induce large amounts of drag like traditional drop tanks do
QUOTE
Currently, the Israeli Air Force flies the majority of their F-15 fleet as well as their F-16I fleet with conformal fuel tanks as well as drop tanks
QUOTE
With all this in mind, Israel has stated that in addition to having access to certain areas of the F-35's software and mission computer hardware, communications systems, weapons carriage capability, electronic countermeasures and surveillance suite, they also want to mount conformal fuel tanks to its skin
QUOTE
Israel already has confirmed it will integrate the SPICE 1000 glide bomb with its F-35s, which will allow for such stand-off attack profiles. Larger and longer-ranged wing-mounted missiles are also another option at the sacrifice of much greater radar signature degradation
QUOTE
The ability to operate the F-35 confidently without ALIS, which executes everything from parts ordering to mission planning, also would give Israel a hedge against cyber attacks which could cripple the system, potentially even on a global level. Israel knows full well the threat of such attacks, and grounding their premier weapon system worth many billions of dollars because of such an event should be highly concerning. Hopefully a similar protocol, if they are allowed to develop one, can be copied by other nations operating the F-35, including the US

Uncharted waters...Meet the Royal Australian Navy’s trailblazing Muslim Captain Mona Shindy

user posted image

WHEN Captain Mona Shindy climbed aboard HMAS Canberra to test missiles in the Pacific, a locker had to be converted into a sleeping quarters to accommodate her.

Never before had an active Australian warship carried women. But aged 23 and launching what would become a 26-year career with the Navy, this was just the first hurdle of a trailblazer.

Already she had a University degree in the blokey domain of engineering. Weapons engineer. And if this were not unusual enough, Captain Shindy happens to be Muslim, and for most of her career in the navy, has been a mother.

On board HMAS Canberra Captain Shindy and her two female room-mates were like celebrities, and not all of it was positive publicity.

“We were an absolute novelty and people knew our every movement, what we got up to and where we were. Overall the experience was a positive experience but there certainly were times that were quite challenging,” Captain Shindy says.

Most female engineers in any work environment _ you really do have to work that little bit harder initially to prove your worth, to demonstrate your competence to really be accepted fully as valued member and a real contributor to the team.”

Then came the challenge of Ramadan, and explaining as a young sublieutenant that she was fasting and would appreciate a meal being put aside for her.

The response was along the lines of: “You’ll eat with everyone else, or you just won’t.” Which left her “the middle of the ocean with a few cans of tuna”.

Once the right ranking officer was made aware of the problem, a solution was soon found.

Anger was never an option.

user posted image

“My first reaction is to empathise, rather than get angry, and to try and be part of the solution and work on the education piece, through engagement and interaction and just being professional about what I do and delivering professional outcomes and results. In the end, people respect that.”

It’s an attitude that has delivered her to the pinnacle of her career, recognised this week when she was named NSW Telstra Business Woman of the Year. As Director Littoral Warfare and Maritime Support, Captain Shindy advises the Government on the best way to spend billions of dollars on replacement tankers, ships, patrol boats — almost everything except submarines.

She was previously charged with turning around the Fast Frigate System Program Office, from an inefficient organisation with adversarial stakeholder relationships, to a collaborative culture with performance-based contracts. And she shaved 30 per cent in costs from a $130 million budget.

“People were happy at the end of the tenure, ships were leaving the wharf on time with all the maintenance done, when initially they weren’t.”

Soon after her first tour of duty on HMAS Canberra, Captain Shindy married and had a daughter, now 20 and a son, 18, who finished his HSC on Wednesday. Their happy accident followed a decade later in the form of another daughter, now 11.

The job has required service on ships for two-year durations, with time away ranging from two to six months.

“But six months in anyone’s language for a mother with two young children and a young family, is a very significant sacrifice.

“I’m not going to dress it up. It was tough.”

user posted image

It could not have happened without an extended family backing her up. Crucial were her mother — “who in many ways acted as a pseudo mother for my children sometimes when I was away” — and husband, who has taken many career breaks.

NEW START FOR DARK BELANGLO

OVERSEAS SCHOOLIES SICKNESS FEARS

“For me, the only thing that made it easier is knowing that those kids had just as much love and support from those that were with them than I could have given them myself.”

Her family migrated from Egypt when she was three.

“The moment my parents migrated to Australia, they were determined to feel as Australian as anyone else.” She holds the position of Chief of Navy’s Strategic Adviser on Islamic Cultural Affairs, for which she was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross in this year’s Australia Day honours for her work bridging cultural divides.

It is her aim to encourage more Muslims to join the defence force — around 100 of the 45000 defence force personnel identify as Muslim, 27 of them in the Navy.

“There’s lots of Australian Muslims who feel very hurt … by previous military campaigns that our defence forces have been on that have I guess resulted in discomfort and difficulty …. where those campaigns have occurred that have caused ramifications for a lot of innocent people.”

user posted image

She says terrorist attacks which have hijacked aspects of religious teachings to justify those behaviours have created “fear and uncertainty for others who are non-Muslims”.

“For some people that gets looked at as the whole Muslim community,” Captain Shindy says. Some young Muslim see this in black and white “us and them” terms.

“They don’t have the maturity necessarily to see the greys and to understand that this is not everyone that has those views about you. That erodes confidence for those kids.”

There’s lots of Australian Muslims who feel very hurt … by previous military campaigns that our defence forces have been on

Her message to them is this: “You can be a proud Australian that loves everything about this great nation and still love your roots and love where you came from and straddle both worlds and both communities. That’s how I live my life and I like to help other people find their way in living those two things.”

And she can cite her own experience, including active service at the start of the 2003 Iraq War.

“It’s always tough, when you go anywhere, whether that’s Iraq. They were difficult times, they were interesting times I think for the whole nation.

“We are an instrument of our democratically elected government and I think that’s something that is very much accepted, understood and part of the contract that I personally have with my organisation. That’s my role, that’s what I signed up to do.”

Watch as This Russian Fighter Spits Cannon Shells, Rockets

Here's a new first person footage showing what it's like to fly a Russian MiG-29. A Russian pilot strapped a sports action camera to his helmet and filmed himself during a close air support exercise firing 80-millimeter rockets and 30-millimeter cannon.

The first shots fired in the video are 80-millimeter rockets. You can see a B-8 rocket pod under the left wing. Each B-8 can carry up to 20 S-8 rockets, which can carry high explosive, anti-tank warheads, devastating fuel-air explosive warheads, or flechette warheads, which unleash scores of tiny, lethal darts.

The next round of shots are from the Gryazev-Shipunov GSh-30-1 30-millimeter gun. The GSh-30-1 is capable of firing armored piercing, high-explosive, or incendiary rounds at a rate of 1,500 to 1,800 rounds per minute.

The MiG-29SMT is a modernized version of the MiG-29, an aircraft comparable to the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The video description says the MiG is from the Western Military District, near Kursk. That would make it part of the 14th Interceptor Aviation Regiment based at Vostochny Airport.

Airbus Helicopters advances Panther MBe deliveries

08 APRIL, 2016 BY: DOMINIC PERRY LONDON

Airbus Helicopters will accelerate deliveries of its AS565 MBe Panther anti-submarine warfare rotorcraft following requests from the Indonesian and Mexican navies – its sole customers for the new variant.

Initial examples were due to be handed over to the services in mid-2017, but this has now advanced to late-2016, says the manufacturer.

Airbus says this has been enabled thanks to changes to the production process which have cut lead times by 30% for final assembly and flight-line operations. This saved “several months” on the first serial aircraft, which conducted its maiden flight in November.

Final assembly has shifted from a static production line to a takt flow line and Airbus Helicopters says it has implemented an integrated team to tackle issues much earlier in the build process.

The first production aircraft is undergoing avionics and mission systems testing in Marignane, France, with qualification expected during the summer.

Airbus Helicopters has 21 Panther MBes on order – 11 for Indonesia and 10 for Mexico, dating from November and June 2014, respectively.

The latest variant of the long-running platform, the MBe gains uprated 1,129shp (842kW) Turbomeca Arriel 2N engines, which offer a 15% power increase over the 2C models they replace and lift maximum take-off weight by 200kg (441lb) to 4.5t.

Earlier editions of the manufacturer’s product literature had suggested a certification target of late 2013 for the AS565 MBe.

The base model of the Su-50 is also known under its prototype name of the T-50 PAKFA. There have been five T-50s built so far. The plane’s final version (the Su-50) is supposed to be fully operational by 2016.

Once complete, the Su-50 will serve as a base model for future fifth-generation aircraft. Some versions of the plane are intended for export, with the bulk of them being developed for India.

The Indian version of the plane, called the Su-50E, will be similar to the Su-50 but modified according to certain demands from the Indian Air Force. Russia and India are also co-developing the Su55-FGFA, a twin-seater version of the Su-50 that will be specially designed for the Indian Air Force.
QUOTE
Aside from India, Russia also plans to complete variants of the Su-50 for South Korea and Iran. The South Korean version, the Su-50EK, should be ready for export by 2018 while the Iranian Su-50ES version will be ready by 2022

RUSSIA DEFENSE REPORT: COUNTERMEASURES OF HYBRID WAR

On April 5, 2016, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree establishing a new paramilitary formation, the National Guard, out of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) Internal Troops, and ordering a number of organizational changes in the MVD and other associated agencies. The first commander of the National Guard will be the Internal Troops commander since 2014, Army General Viktor Vasilyevich Zolotov, who has had a long career in the intelligence and security services dating to the 1980s. The National Guard will include the Internal Troops as well as the SOBR and OMON special riot control and counter-terrorism units, which will result in a paramilitary internal security organization directly comparable to France’s Gendarmerie Nationale.

This will provide the National Guard commander and, ultimately, the President, with an integrated internal security organization capable of fine-tuning the level of violence, depending on the level of the threat, starting with Maidan-style not-so-peaceful protests and ending with full-scale insurgencies. During the Chechen Wars, Internal Troops became almost indistinguishable from the Armed Forces in that they were using artillery and armored vehicles. While there is no mention of the National Guard’s external role, its mission might also involve peacekeeping and law enforcement operations in, say, the Donbass, where their presence would be less controversial than of the military.

Instead of being part of the MVD subordinate to its minister, the National Guard’s commander will answer directly to the President, which implies institutional standing on a par with other security services and ministries. National Guard’s sphere of responsibility will include combating terrorism and organized crime. Furthermore, the MVD will absorb a number of separate federal agencies, such as the Federal Migration Service (FMS) and the Federal Drug Trafficking Interdiction Service (FSKN).

These far-reaching changes suggest that Russia is taking seriously the threat, voiced by ISIS, al-Nusra, and several of its international sponsors, that it will “pay a price” for defeating Islamist forces in Syria. Even though ISIS cannot avoid a crushing defeat in Syria at this point, many of its militants, leaders, and organizational networks will migrate or be transferred by their international sponsors to other theaters of the global hybrid war. While they include Libya, a more worrisome prospect is their use to destabilize Central Asia and perhaps even the Caucasus.

The combined focus on drug trafficking, organized crime, migration, and terrorism is not coincidental, because in combination these are vital elements of hybrid warfare practiced by Islamist forces. We have seen these factors in action, individually and in combination, in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and most recently in Western Europe, where the migrant stream is being used to entrench organized crime groups with ties to the Middle East. These organized crime networks can then serve as a “delivery vehicle” of sorts for terrorists who can use the tried and true illegal transportation networks to enter Europe and perpetrate acts of terrorism.

One should expect a similar model to be used soon in Central Asia, with Russia being the ultimate target. For all of Obama’s talk about Russia’s economy being “torn to shreds”, the fact remains that its labor market is still large enough to absorb large numbers of migrant workers from adjoining countries. Many of them come from Central Asia. There are significant organized crime networks all over Russia with ties to the Caucasus and Central Asia which are engaged in drug trafficking and which likewise could be used for terrorist purposes. In order for such tactics to be effectively countered, a single government agency dealing with all of the components of hybrid war in an integrated manner will be much more effective than having several agencies each attempting to address individual aspects of the problem.

The new National Guard appears to be an instrument that is directly intended to make the hybrid war doctrines fail when applied against Russia and its close allies.

America’s Secret Army in Iraq: US Says ‘Temporary’ to Mask Troop Surge

user posted image

QUOTE
The Pentagon has made abundantly clear that the use of the term “temporary” does not suppose an imminent drawdown of these troops. Rather, Pentagon officials have confirmed that there is no scheduled end date for their operation, saying that temporary troops will remain until there is an “enduring solution.”

Defense analysts speculate that the “temporary” label has been artificially added to recent troop deployments to keep the nominally reported number of troops capped at 3,870.

However, as the US continues to add troops to repel repeated incursions by Daesh in Northern Iraq, it is thought that the US may be compelled to renegotiate the Status of Forces arrangement.
