Right now I am using Bose Lifestyle which doesn't have 4K input and sound wise it is alright, I just upgraded my TV, I was pondering upgrading the sound system as well. Heard good things about Denon receivers, which ones should I be looking at?
ironcrowz If you worry about too much power damaging your speaker, get a speaker with high sensitivity. Less watt is needed to produce the desired loudness (sound pressure level). I normally give this advice to people who are new to home theater.
Here is an example of a wrong setup: Use hard to drive speakers with poor amp. To achieve the desired listening level, the user cranks up the volume knob. The poor amp tries so bad and distorts. With electronic eq, you will be surprised that a lot of power is actually needed.
It is hard to go wrong with a powerful amp, but it's not cheap. Too much power is better than too little power. Your ear hits the limit first before the speaker hits its limit. If you ignore the distortion, the danger to the speaker becomes real.

I see, based on SSJBen's and your advice, I think I do not need to worry much about damaging the speakers or amp/AVR? Since the human limit will be reached before theirs
I'm eyeing the Denon AVR-S960H now, should be more than sufficient for a long time.
If pair with the above Denon AVR, any speaker brand or model can recommend for rock music? Budget preferably below RM2k but willing to top up slightly if there's significant improvement on the sound quality.. Thank u!
i hope this calculator (link below) will help you. if you are going towards reference level (i normally play my movies at -10 to -7 dB), the AVR actually hits the limit before your ears. speaker sensitivity of 88dB @ 2.83 volts / 1 meter (as an example) is actually hard to drive. https://www.crownaudio.com/en-US/tools/calc..._power_required
just buy within your current budget. no point of topping up slightly. if you keep on digging the rabbit hole, upgraditis is always there until you hit the pro level. by the time you have learned enough, you might wanna get external amplification and advance eq. i will always prefer an AVR with pre-outs. however, the budget increase is a lot.
ur ear still ok wor. play so loud my ear sure spoil ady
btw, newbie dunno what is ref level 0db. can u teachs him
ears still ok. i do hearing test every year. the thing is, i rarely use my HT. not even once a month.
the room makes a big difference i can't even go -15dB in a non-treated room. you also want low distortion from your gears. that annoying loud sound could the distortions you are hearing.

I had set up my x3700h. Wanted to ask, after run audyssey, I was trying to check the speaker level matching.
The amp was using relative scale -79.5db - 18db, so I need to set the master vol to 0db and run test tone to see whether all speaker is @ 75db, correct?
Ok noted on you guys advice..... originally was eyeing on Polk Audio signature series... then saw new launching model Reserve series...
But since now cant do audition, tat's why thinking to get height speaker 1st... then maybe i should opt for subwoofer for now 1st.
just keep on doing research, save the money, and buy the LCR that you wanted. preferably all LCR be the same speakers. once done, buy the same speaker for surround use.
for the subwoofer, you get what you pay. big driver with reliable power amp not cheap.
yes avr normally doesnt comes with speakers. Speakers are sold seperately. Looks like you wanted to reused the samsung speakers. Basically you need to check your cables as these home theater set normally comes with the fool proof connector. Those might not work with your avr. But as long as your samsung speakers are passive ones and has only red black connect.. it may work. Also you cannot use back the subwoofer. So you may need to invest on an avr and a subwoofer. As long as you dont crank those speaker too loud i guess it can work for the time being.
AstonCheah every speaker uses a standard power and ground set of wires. just cut the connector if you have no use for that. definitely will work on any avr or audio amplifier.

Dirac Live Active Room Treatment is coming in Spring 2023
By treating all the speakers in a room as a single system rather than as separate units - something the company calls ‘spatial optimisation’ - the room can be cleared of bass decay to provide a clear, less-smeared listening experience.
