Hi guys, glad to have found this forum that talks about something that I need help on smile.gif

I have a set of old home theater fr Sony but the receiver is already faulty not worth to repair. Thought of using the speakers (subs and 5 speakers) for good use. It uses wireless (I think infrared front and back to send audio signal to the back surround).

Any idea how I can use them? Only worry is its infrared is proprietary and I can't use them for any type of receivers?

Any suggestion would be much appreciated smile.gif

just hard-wire the speaker driver to the amp

Dear sifus,

I recently bought a basic Denon AVR (x250bt - no Audyssey), a Mission centre speaker and Pro Sub 800 to complete P4 Audioengine bookshelfs (got tired of soft movie dialogues). I'd like to get input from all sifus here regarding the optimum setting for the speakers:
1. Subwoofer crossover (40-150Hz)
2. AVR crossover
3. AVR LFE / LFE + Main
4. AVR LPF (I think it stands for low pass filter)

I googled a lot and am now very confused. The P4s go down to 58Hz, so do I set AVR crossover to 60Hz and match Subwoofer crossover to 60Hz? Should i select AVR LFE so all LFE goes to sub only? The sub seller recommended that i set sub crossover down to the minimum 40Hz. Please help notworthy.gif

*
I'll set as below:
1. Speaker crossover = 120. There's no way it can do 60 with authority.
2. Subwoofer crossover (rear of sub) = max
3. LFE. Your mains are not full range (do not choose LFE+Main)
4. AVR LFE (LPF) = max (about 200Hz).

LFE (.1 channel) always go to subwoofer only. The only alternative is tactile transducer (buttkicker)

11/11 sales around the corner. Anyone taking advantage of getting new speakers, subwoofers or av receivers? 🤔
*
doubt there will be any discount.
unfortunately, AV gears are deemed like luxury gears in malaysia rclxub.gif , while 11.11 is meant for poorfags who's looking for good deals cry.gif .
the only time things are slightly cheaper is during the KLIAV show, but that also on common gears.

If you are buying something from D&M, make sure you get a model with Audyssey XT32

Thanks for your input. Chose the Klipsch center speaker cos it's the only one with a height less than 6 inches in order to fit my tv rack. Had different brands for surround speakers cos I thought it wouldn't matter and would like to experiment on these 2 brands. Do they really sound that different? Sorry for being a noob here, never really experienced surround sound with a proper setup before. Just HT in a box.
*
if you are limited by the center speaker, always ensure that your front speakers are from the same family as your center.
if possible, LCR being the same model brows.gif , but i understand the compromise u have to make.

For surrounds, it's fine if you don't match them to the front mains. All surrounds does is make effects and ambient noises. 90% of a movie's content comes out of the front LCR (the major bulk of it from the center) and the sub.
Not very accurate on the surround channels that is best to be in the same brand as the fronts. You can match surrounds from any manufacturer as long as the speaker can keep up with the fronts. Meaning if the fronts can go down to 50hz, the surrounds should at the very least be able to do 60hz. Matching is a myth.

but with atmos, u need all to be the same brows.gif. belum cuba belum tau. lepas cuba hari2 mau.

Hi All Sifu,

Lately I just bought Yamaha AVR RX-V385. Just wonder to ask is there any good guideline on how to tune for the best setting?

Thanks in advance..
*
step 1: get all the speakers at the correct loudness (SPL) and distance.
step 2: bass management (crossover, large/small)
step 3: dig deeper into the rabbit hole with mic brows.gif

Any clear guideline from web for reference will be appreciated.
*
do read the manual carefully. since you have yamaha, their tech is YPAO. use the calibration mic to setup. that's the very basic you must do (else you may get hearing loss). for starter, you need to know what reference volume level is. only then you understand the calibration.
if you wanna dig deeper, join www.avsforum.com (US) or www.avforums.com (UK). beware, it is highly addictive. devil.gif

in your opinion do you think in ceiling or the downward firing speaker would be the proper solution for atmos?
*
IMO, no. The sound quality of in-ceiling speaker is very poor due to the lack of the speaker cabinet.
If possible, get a proper speaker with bracket and struts that run across the ceiling.
But not everyone can do that. Depends on how much you can compromise.
I have gone from the era of 5.0 mini compo to Atmos with acoustic transparent screen, dealing with many compromise in the past. As you learned more, you realized there are things that just cannot be cheap-out due to science/physics.

Fortunately it comes with Audyssey Low Frequency Containment band which I find it handy  tongue.gif  according to the manual its written. Anyhow i dont really listen to music too loud on max about 55 the volume, dont want to mess with my neighbours  tongue.gif

*
you should start venture into reference volume setting (volume/SPL unit in +/- dB) icon_idea.gif

For movie, - 10dB.
No comment on music because most are mastered way too hot.

how normally ppl tune their speaker?
1. hired professional, how much
2. can diy by using mobile apps
3. buy receiver that support tuning

3. buy minidsp mic and run rew

my advise: don't dig the rabbit hole too deep (synthesis, datasat, storm, acurus, trinnov etc) unless you are fated with thick wallet

+ The A3080 ran MUCH cooler than the x4500h, it's a night and day difference. It's only half a joke when people said you could boil an egg on top of Denon/Marantz AVR...
*
That's nice to hear. Everyone says Yamaha AVR is a lot cooler than Denon. I used to have a Yamaha RX-V659, which I then upgrade to Denon 3312. IMO, Both are equally hot. sweat.gif

my circle of friends generally are on denon/marantz hence was wondering.

perhaps they just like the simplicity of Audyssey.

Location doesn't matter as long as not made in USA or EU area.
Sony made in Malaysia but not cheap.
D&M mostly made in Vietnam.

From your experience how do you would setup 2 front speaker firing all the time for both movie and music?

Thus far, I know I have 2 option either make my second pair as Zone2 or just straight fire it from the speaker output by setting it large, but Im not sure what are its loss and gain, until I play around.
*
u want 2 pairs of front speakers playing at the same time? why?

Aiyo, really difficult to answer, which I had been asked gazillion times, to be frank, maybe its just an old habit from tons of years ago! Since my ears are so tuned to it, I just seem cant leave without the extra power. Probably I like the bass it provides, its similar to modern term of bi-amping, which I thought of using, unfortunately my amp is fried.
*
for music only or for movies? that multi fronts gonna spoil the eq and sound stage

Reading r/hometheater it seems that SVS subs are regarded as some of the best subs one could buy.

But the price for SVS here are pretty high assumingly due to shipping, import taxes and whatnot. Prices from Maxx Audio:
PB-1000 PRO - RM4099
SB-1000 PRO - RM3579
($599 & $499 in the US)

Are there subs from other brands available here that is comparable to the SVS but cheaper (due to being widely available, lower shipping cost etc)?
*
That's just how shitty our market is. Always has been. There is no choice actually.

QUOTE(SSJBen @ Mar 13 2021, 11:52 PM)
Rythmik is sold in Malaysia, slightly higher priced than SVS
*
It was cheaper than SVS at the beginning. thumbup.gif
