as long you get to the outskirts, far enough from any city/town centre to avoid light pollution, then you should have no problem shooting the milky way

if I remember correctly I saw before a pic someone took in tasik kenyir or chini, quite nice

the japanese tea garden?

that's the only "park" there high enough to have a clear shot of the skies and has almost 0 light when night falls.

Yeap, the park is closed after 6pm i think but if it's a "car-park" like area then most probably it's the area before the uphill entrance. Pitch black with not street lamps whatsoever and unobstructed view of the neighboring hills and also, no tall trees.

Other than that place, I cannot recall any areas anymore =/

I think the Google van did not go until that far so Google Maps only have a very rough satellite image of it:-

Japanese Tea Garden

but you cannot miss it once you enter Berjaya Hills. Signboard everywhere.

Another nice spot is Sekinchan. You may try google image "Sekinchan Milky Way". However according to my Sekinchan colleague, she said got local people really overnight at paddy field for few months, then only managed to snap few pictures.

I also got friend managed to snap milky way using Iphone at Langkawi...

This really depend on timing, weather, sky clarity & LUCK!

Getting a milky way shot requires little to no light polution. A friend introduced me this DarkSiteFinder site to see which area has the potential to have a good spot for milky way shooting. Can use it as a reference on where you would like to do.

That being said, if there is a milky way outing, I would like to join smile.gif

Due to full moon on 22-Feb & 23-Feb, the ideal date (weekend) will be on 27-Feb (Sat) or 5-Mar (Sat).

Milky way rise around 10pm according to Stellarium, South-North

However I had check with weather forecast: hotspot like Sekinchan, Banting & Ulu Yam seem to be cloudy. sweat.gif

you have to go outskirt area and must be a safe place, which mean you will need a car and possibly the place might be out of reception range

so it is better to go with group of friends

We notice it in Kampar a few times especially before the west city fully developed. I would say if can, go when there is a clear sky and no moon, go to the road from Kampar to Malim nawar, the duck farm if you know where is it. There got less light pollution and able to meet it. Hahahaha but still depends on luck I would say.

The time to shoot is depend on earth rotation and position towards the galaxy/Milkyway. Sometimes Milkyway appear as early as 8pm, or as late as 5am. (First time need to call PM early and AM late... )

But a general understanding is at 12am midnight, Milkyway should be directly above u as the sun is directly opposite direction of the earth.

The right question is which month of the year (position of the planet earth) we get the see the best part of the Milkyway.

As suggested use stellarium to check. PC Mac version free. Android iOS need pay.

Also download an app called moon phase to know the moon cycle.

Moon's reflection is very bad. It can turn night photo to day like effect.

No WhatsApp group?

Preferably wide angle lens with wide aperture.

The longer the focal length the faster the shutter speed you'll have to use to avoid star trails, hence to compensate for the loss of light you'll have to use a higher ISO which results in more noise.

Similar with aperture, the wider the aperture the more light you allow in hence lower ISO.

Cameron of course.
What is the ideal iso to avoid the noise problem?
I seen night vision lenses for my cam.
Are they any good for this kind of view?

That huge globe is earth?

Yeah Sagittarius A is where the supermassive blackhole located right in the center, stars draw into it gravitational pull and traffic is heavy there, that's why it quite bright

Need to survey some places that are totally blocking out the lights

last night went for milkyway hunting until 3am, drove like 200km around places...wasnt so much in luck, but i need to advise everyone, nothing comes according to plan, or perfect day (night for my case) but you must never give up and continue to fight on(waiting is our game)...

well, last night milkyway timing was it will come out at 12 and best at 2am so we start our long drive at 9... we reach our spot at around 10pm, and start hiking and after a 15min, i notice very dark heavy cloud, and hearing sound of rain in the distance (had good hearing from training during macro shooting to hear to hunt for insect) had to RUN back to our car (stop by the roadside) and just when we(3 of us) reached our car, heavy rain poured down.

Attached Image
its a raining night, discouraged. this photo taken after the rain stopped around 11:30. my friend was suggesting we give up and go home, unlike my style, who believe perseverance will reward you.

but if without the cloud, the sky is crazy clear~ i mean, the naked eye can see massive amount of deep space stars then normally with hazy/misty night.

Attached Image
look at how much clear star can be capture... damn the clouds. and then, lightning fires non stop, one friend suggested (sailor/cruise captain) that we better dont stay at our location, well, we are on a open ground, slightly elevated from other grounds, basically we are open target for lightning strike.

Discourage, we pack up, call it a night and headed home, by driving of course. buttttttt im not giving up yet, i know these weather, driving away from the thunder cloud storm about 20mins later around 40km? i stopped by a roadside (tim's hideout, google it, nice place to hang out for starglazing), i took a look out the car, and thumbsup.gif

Attached Image
and we can see the milkyway with our naked eye. and its the first time for one of our friend, and she goes "wahhh, wahhh wahhh" non stop and still laughed non stop for 10min.

then i suggest we head back to where we came from... 15 min driving back to where we came from, i knew a spot where we can give a try, not a perfect spot as its a entrance road to another kampung and because saturday, car coming back from the city non stop, disturbing our exposure. but then, its also a good spot to park our car safely and....

Attached Image
i just snap a few shot and sit there and enjoy the stars... but, sadly, couple minute later, cloud comes in again

Attached Image
did i mention the non stop lightning? well, it create a nice effect too. and it continues, cloud comes, we move to new spot, cloud comes we move to new spot, and until 3am, we packup and headed home.

a few more shots.

last night went for milkyway hunting until 3am, drove like 200km around places...wasnt so much in luck, but i need to advise everyone, nothing comes according to plan, or perfect day (night for my case) but you must never give up and continue to fight on(waiting is our game)...

well, last night milkyway timing was it will come out at 12 and best at 2am so we start our long drive at 9... we reach our spot at around 10pm, and start hiking and after a 15min, i notice very dark heavy cloud, and hearing sound of rain in the distance (had good hearing from training during macro shooting to hear to hunt for insect) had to RUN back to our car (stop by the roadside) and just when we(3 of us) reached our car, heavy rain poured down.

Hi, these photo are along kampung beraya to kampung tusan(trusan) Bekenu, Miri. It's along the beach, benefit, strong wind, no haze issue. Bad, lots of salt particle contain in the air.

is there any spot in genting that is free from light pollution? i dont think there is any, if you managed to find, make sure you have clear horizon view on east and southeast, which means no obstruction, that way you should be able to see milky way rising from horizon around 12am

new moon night is next friday and saturday

possible but difficult, i heard sekinchan has quite a lot of light pollution, you might need to go further northeast to get a better shoot

depends on the light pollution, it is difficult to see the milky way with bare eyes, but you can see a cluster of stars at the center of milky way

Any specific location on the fraser hill? Sorry I'm not familiar with fraser hill, that's a huge place I presumed

You can try this.... i think finding a good high spot is challenging in Fraser hill alone, best if bring along your friends. Morning/afternoon scout place, night time only start planning to shoot.

Thanks Bro. I was lucky, because last friday night there was a black out in my area. No street lights also. Can't sleep yet, and look up to the sky, there was many stars so decide to take a few shots here and there right in front of my house. I was quite surprise after I transferred those picture to my tablet via playmemories. By the time I realized I shot milkyway, and want to do it again, the power came back..... cry.gif

By the way, I re-looked again your shot, seems to be very clean......did you do post processing with lightroom? These 2 i shot was in JPG format....should had went for RAW and process it with capture 1..... bangwall.gif

p/s: More foreground....like this?

I think your lens is not wide enough, you'll either need to get an ultra wide angle lens or do a panorama 1 of the sky and 1 of the foreground and stitch together.

You may need to use this apps to find Milky Way.

PhotoPills for iOS
SkyGuide for iOS
Stellarium Mobile for Android

Is the sky clear without clouds? I heard Cameron have more mist since last week.

I did iso 6400. But I think it was too high (noise is taking a heavy toll on the IQ). I've just read that long exposure noise is significantly lower than high iso noise. So, next time, I will try iso 3200 or less with longer exposure setting (was using 20 sec) perhaps will try 25 sec instead. hmm.gif

depends on your lens, the longer the focal length the shorter exposure you can have else you will see star trail

is midnight around 1-2am, if i shoot at ISO 6400, 30s @ F2.8 it would be overexpose

i only shoot around ISO 800

Your focal length dictates your exposure setting as well.. assuming on crop 16mm for Canon would be 29mm, hence with the 500 rule, your shutter speed should ideally be around 17 sec to avoid star trail. Using the 600 rule is fine if you're not that fussy.

Tripod and a faster shutter speed depending on your lens focal length. E.g. 24mm on FF you can use around 20 seconds. If 24mm on crop you use around 14 seconds.

You need to use a faster shutter speed. The star trails are very prominent.

Actually, it wasnt the shuttle speed, because i was using a wider lens tonight (12mm = 18mm FF equivalent) and exposed it for 25 sec, which is still under the 500 rule calculation. It was because i didnt bring my tripod cry.gif and have to rest my camera on my bike sit for support. It could also be the camera shake from pressing the shuttle (I should had use the 2 sec timer, but i was lazy). I was out hunting for milkyway just now, thinking that I might not see it, that's why i didnt bring my tripod bangwall.gif

lol switching to a 2 sec timer takes a lot less effort than riding out on your bike hunting for milkyway...

Ya loh, lesson learned. Spoilt so many shots because of that.....by the time i returned on the second trip with my tripod and 2 sec timer, the cloud and the moon came in.... cry.gif bangwall.gif

Then, when i reached home and looked up the sky, I saw this.... sweat.gif

I have problem adjusting to Capture One 9.. old dog got problem learning new tricks.. stuck on PS CC. But I may have no choice if I want the 42mb 14bit dynamic range RAW. Need to learn some tricks from you..

To be honest, this was my first photo edited using Capture one 9 (Never tried Lightroom before because it is not free). I am using it because it's free for sony camera....I was simply playing around after I watched the tutorial on youtube :"Boosting the Milkyway: Lightroom tutorial" (You can do a search on youtube). Of course the 2 programs are different, but some adjustment they share the same. So, I simply try to duplicate the settings to my best ability.

42mb 14bit RAW = Sony A7R II ? shocking.gif (So rich ah you......)

My one, I took in limbang a small town in Sarawak. The direction.....I just look up at the sky and see where the milkway is (usually white clusters look like cloud) and shoot lah....I dont have knowledge or sophisticated skymap to guide me where to look. icon_rolleyes.gif

As for others, I think you can refer to the first page of this thread. nod.gif

You can see milky way with your naked eye? I never experienced that sad.gif

Around city too much light pollution, must use skymap to see where the milky way is.

I am interested in taking this kind of photos too. Too bad there's not much place in KL that is available for shooting without the light pollution.

It is impossible to have people to pose there and take this shot right? hmm.gif

Please let me join the group too. laugh.gif

Milky ways can be captured during nights without the moon. So its highly recommended to check on moon phases to maximize your opportunity to shoot.

The presence of the moon and city lights will add to light contamination.

My understanding from talking to friends who do milky way shots is, rule of thumb is to see at which point the constellation Scorpio is above the horizon after dark. They say that the constellation is a good point to identify which time of the year will be good to snap milky way shots. Can use Google Sky for this. Not so sure exatly la, since I never tried myself. Also, in northern region, Chuping, Perlis, is a possible location to snap shots.

Makes sense, the point where the cloud of stars can be seen clearly n easily is seasonal depending on the earth's position. Other times its in the sky during the day so definitely cant see. Not that difficult la bro, just download Sky n then have a look, I think the app even shows the position of the milky way bulk. Several constellations r tied to that cloud, like Sagittarius n Scorpio, so just follow them.

I don't have a full frame camera, does it matter? The widest lens I have is only kit lens (18mm x 1.6 = 28.8mm). I tried to shoot star trails but failed. I find difficulty in the dark to control the focus of the lens to infinity because there's no such label on kit lens.

Perhaps if you are fussy for less noise, but APS-C has no problems taking milky way/star trails.
During day time, while using autofocus: focus at the clouds in the sky. Memorize/mark the spot on your lens where the focus is as that would be your infinity spot.

Change to manual focus and use live view. Point at a star and zoom in to the max. Then adjust your focus ring till it is pin point sharp smile.gif

Change to manual focus and use live view. Point at a star and zoom in to the max. Then adjust your focus ring till it is pin point sharp smile.gif

Thank you but I don't understand why should I zoom in to the max since I am looking to shoot wide angle hmm.gif

Nice discussion, sadly just found this thread. I'm leaving at KKB (in Masjid Darul Quran area). Will join the wechat group soon. And hope to join one of your MW chasing.

He meant to zoom in - in your liveview screen to ensure your focus point is sharp. Not the lens zoom in.

For samyang, does 10mm will be better? Cause I heard that for 10mm it handle distortion more better than the 14mm

The 10mm is for APS-C cameras and 14mm is for FF format.

What's the requirements to take it clean pic?

1. Wide angle lens with f2.8
2. Tripod
3. Timing speed?

Thanks

You can't follow everything to the T since everytime and everywhere the conditions will be different.
The usual rule for shutter speed is don't go over your focal length/500 to avoid star trails. Unless that's what you want.
ISO levels you can set after some test shots to get what you want.

great article i found

http://www.lonelyspeck.com/how-to-find-the...ise/#more-84388

higher ISO ≠ more relative noise

your ISO doesn't affect the amount of noise on your image, it's your exposure time that affects the most. So bump up your ISO as much

"Why does a group QR Code have an expiration date?

Group QR Codes help users join or create groups chat more quickly. However, there is the risk that the code may be used by strangers for inappropriate purposes.
