Netflix Atmos is not real Atmos isn't it? Is it really worth it to get a new TV box like Nvidia Shield 2019 to get lossy Atmos?
I currently have an Nvidia Shield 2015 which doesn't have Netflix Atmos and Dolby Vision. I want Dolby Vision for my local UHD BR files but the 2019 Shield is not very appealing since its not that different compared to my 2015 one. And there have not been any other interesting tv boxes in the same range as the Shield. So I am thinking of getting the PS5 or XSX when they launch.
*
Netflix Atmos is still real Atmos lol, just that it is DD+ instead of Dolby TrueHD. But ofc in the end streaming content is still more compressed compared to physical Blu-ray disc itself.
But having Netflix Atmos is still better than nothing although not many Atmos content on Netflix.

Don't think there are any significant features which would be a big upgrade compared to the current 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro. Besides HDMI 2.1 is there anything which would make it an upgrade?

Have you tried it before? How does it compare to the usual lossless Atmos? I have not given it much thought since I dismissed from the beginning due to it coming through DD+ which is compressed and streaming bitrate sucks anyway. If it sounds as good as lossless Atmos, then I may have to prioritize this feature for my next purchase.

The Shield is quite hopeless as a gaming platform due to limited good quality games and lack of an asian server for geforce now. So it makes sense to get something like the PS5 or XSX which can both game very well and act as a media box for local MKV/BDMV files. I think the XSX will probably be better at this though. While gaming is not a priority for me, it makes sense to pay a bit more and get something that can do much more than my Shield 2015.
This is my opinion at the moment by the way and I am happy to hear any other thoughts on this since there is still a lot of time before the new consoles launch.

No I have not heard Netflix Atmos before so I’m quite interested in trying haha. But you should be able to hear the object placement/height just at a theoretically lower quality. Many have already argued that it is hard to differentiate between DD+ and TrueHD.
And I won’t be surprised since similarly it is very hard for me to differentiate 16bit FLAC VS 24bit lossless music since the most important aspect is the mastering/mixing of the original recording. It should be the same concept for DD+ VS TrueHD. If their original mixing is done very well, you should hear very little difference. However if you are comparing physical Blu-ray Discs to streaming or even ripped/downloaded 4K/blu-ray, I do hear a difference - physical discs sounds way superior.

I won’t be using the Nvidia for gaming at all either, I already have a PS4 for that. The only reason I’m considering the Pro version is because of the bloody USB port that the normal Shield lacks mad.gif
Did you face any hanging/stuttering when playing 4K files (40-80gb size) on your Nvidia Pro via usb external hard disk?

I think it makes sense to consider netflix / streamed Dolby Atmos for my future purchase, will be on the look-out for this.

I have no game console currently but do enjoy playing some casual games on the Shield which is why I want my next box to be better at gaming. I don't have the pro, just the plain Shield 16GB but the old model so it comes with a couple of USB ports. There is absolutely no stutter when playing large 4k files on the Shield (tried up to 80gb before) but files sit in a NAS so via Ethernet cable. Have tested USB drive before but only 30-40gb files and not frequently, but I didn't have any issues before. The Shield is a beast in this regard compared to any other TV box. BDMV files - sometimes it takes more time to launch at the beginning but once started will be smooth.
Maybe you need to check your hard drive speed and USB cable version also, I had a Minix U1 previously and it was quite good and didn't stutter or hang.

Ahh well PS5 will make a great addition, not sure if i'll upgrade my PS4 since it has been underused for many years...

Thanks for the info, was using WD hard disks which uses USB 3.0 so it shouldn't be the hard drive problem. Do you use Kodi for all your playback content?
Will most likely get the Shield Pro version since i have some Shopee cashback which helps to reduce the price... however my soundbar only has 2 HDMI inputs lol, i would have to get a HDMI switch now since i have 3 devices to connect sweat.gif

If your PS4 is under-used , now is the time to sell it coz the prices for used PS4 are quite high biggrin.gif
Yes, I use Kodi for playback of local media files. If its not your hard drive then its probably the Minix.

Hope you enjoy the Shield Pro once you get it.

I am using Apple TV 4K Box.

All my movies is in external HDD connected to USB 3.0 port and later connect using 1000Mbps LAN cable to Apple TV 4K.
Playback software tested on Infuse, Plex, MrMC and Emby.

So far all no issue playback full REMUX movie up to 90+ Mbps bitrate where up to 110 GB is the biggest movie size I ever play.

But wireless will have issue probably due to my wireless is only up to 150Mbps.

Haha my wife still uses the PS4 now and then, so to wait nearly 1/2 a year without a PS4 might be a bit troublesome..
Thanks, hopefully will get it by this weekend to play around with biggrin.gif

I want to ask. If i have Sony x70f tv. The 4k resolution is not up to 3840 does this mean the tv is not certified?

I see only x7500f is in the list.

Where you get such information.

It is 4K with resolution of 3840x2160.

https://www.sony.com.my/electronics/televis.../specifications

All recent model from famous brand like Sony, Samsung, LG, Panasonic and etc. is capable to run up to maximum resolution of 4K HDR/Dolby Vision. Dolby Vision is only for TV that support on Dolby Vision.

https://devices.netflix.com/en/recommendedtv/2018/

this the list. only 7500f

i just want to double confirm with the information if it is true here.

This is recommendation list, the TV need meet all Netflix requirements just will appear here.

Take for example LG brand TV no longer in the list since year 2019 and also this year 2020, the reason due to Netflix added another requirements where Netflix always run in background even when you not using it, and LG webOS system don't run apps in background when not using it.

Even though LG no longer in list but not means LG TV cannot playback in 4K HDR. LG TV even run Netflix in Dolby Vision for supported model.

This recommendation is somehow not very useful and confusing consumer already.

2160p is 4K. Always took horizontal value.

For example
  • SD is 720x480 and we call it 480p
  • HD is 1280x720 and we call it 720p
  • Full HD is 1920x1080 and we call it 1080p
  • 4K is 3840x2160 and we call it 2160p
  • 8K is 7680x4320 and we call it 4320p

Where P stand for progressive scan.

Most stream and physical format is p.
Only Live TV channel broadcast in i which stand for interlace.
