B-1B Bombers Are The Aerial Weapon Of Choice For Supporting Iraq's Ramadi Offensive

user posted image

QUOTE
High above the battleground of Ramadi, Iraq, B-1B Lancer bombers circle like vultures, waiting for targeting information and using their own keen eyes to locate potential enemies to destroy.
QUOTE
He said [the B-1B] was being used due to its long loiter time, its ability to hold lots of munitions and [its] “extraordinary precision.” The B-1 is able to hold 84 500lb general-purpose bombs, and loiter up to 10 hours without a single refueling.
QUOTE
A-10s are not being used in the offensive at the moment, he said, but it’s not clear why.
QUOTE
The B-1B has a few things fighters don’t: lots and lots of fuel, three cavernous weapons bays, and four crew members to take part in the fight.

QUOTE
As such, the B-1B has become a go-to asset when it comes to providing close air support (CAS)
QUOTE
Yet in an urban battle like in Ramadi, Iraq, the B-1’s ability to loiter for long periods may give its crews a situational awareness advantage over tactical jets

Vietnam Reveals New Drone for Patrolling the South China Sea

QUOTE
Vietnam revealed its largest indigenous high-altitude long endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) this December, IHS Jane’s Defense Weekly reports. According to local media reports, the prototype was completed at the beginning of November and will commence test flights over the South China Sea in the summer of 2016.
QUOTE
The new HS-6L could be used for surveilling the Chinese naval base at Sanya on China’s Hainan Island and military facilities (e.g., ports and airfields) that China is building in the potentially oil-rich South China Sea.

U.S. Fears Grow Of A ‘Newly Awakened’ Russian Navy

For the first time in 24 years, the U.S. Navy’s intelligence branch has published an unclassified report warning against a rapidly rearming and increasingly aggressive Ru
QUOTE
“Russia has begun, and over the next decade will make large strides in fielding a 21st-century navy capable of a dependable national defense [and] an impressive but limited presence in more distant global areas of interest, manned by a new generation of post-Soviet officers and enlisted personnel,”
QUOTE
today the Russian fleet boasts 186 war-ready subs and surface ships operating in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans plus the Black Sea, the Baltic, the Caspian, the Mediterranean, and even the Arctic, according to Fedoroff’s report.

This makes the Russian navy the world’s third-biggest maritime force after No. 1 America—with more than 280 modern warships plus more than 100 support vessels—and second-place China.
QUOTE
Before the twin missile launches, only the United States had demonstrated the modern ability to launch long-distance cruise-missile strikes from ships and subs, against ground targets.

Syrian Army seizes another large village in northeastern Latakia

user posted image

The Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade of the Republican Guard is at it again; this time, they chose to launch a massive assault on the vast Kurdish Mountains (Jabal Al-Akrad) in the Latakia Governorate’s northeastern countryside.

On Monday morning, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Qurdaha, the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP), and the Syrian Resistance – struck the frontline defenses of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) and the Free Syrian Army’s “Liwaa Suqour Al-Ghaab” at the village of Katf Al-Alamah, killing a confirmed 18 enemy combatants while also destroying two mounted machine gun turrets.

Following a long 6 hour battle that had both parties on the offensive at different times during the day, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade and their allies (primarily the National Defense Forces of Qurdaha) finally broke-through the Islamist rebel defenses and imposed full control over Katf Al-Alamah and its surrounding hilltops.

According to a military source in Jabal Al-Akrad, the village of Katf Al-Alamah is situated just north of the recently captured village of Katf Al-Harami and west of the contested town of Kabani. Currently, the Syrian Armed Forces are attempting to seal off the Latakia-Idlib border from the Islamist rebels in Jisr Al-Shughour; this is part of their long-term objective, which is to cutoff all supply lines to Jabhat Al-Nusra inside the integral mountaintop town of Salma.

China Has Started Building the J-20 Stealth Fighter

user posted image

QUOTE
China's Chengdu J-20 fighter has officially entered the early stages of production. The bird you see here is the first production model of the large, stealthy fighter, photographed on the tarmac just days ago. The fighter, marked 2101 on the fuselage, is painted a dull yellow—likely a primer coat.

The low rate initial production (LRIP) fighters will likely go to People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) test pilots for flight testing. The prototype's appearance means that most of the plane is likely frozen, design-wise, with no major changes anticipated. This new change of status puts the roughly at the same development level as the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Kadyrov blames US, Turkey ‘personal ambitions’ for Syrian crisis

user posted image

QUOTE
“Because of some personal ambitions, the United States and Turkey are not even trying to get on common ground with Syrian President Bashar Assad, despite the sufferings of millions of Syrians,” Kadyrov said at the major annual press conference in the Chechen capital, Grozny.
QUOTE
“Just imagine, [Turkish President] Erdogan and America are saying that until Assad retires they are not even going to raise the question about stabilizing the situation. So many people are suffering because of their personal ambitions, a whole country has been destroyed because of them,” he added.
QUOTE
Kadyrov also said that Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIL/ISIS) received funds from Arab and European countries.

“Their numbers reach the tens of thousands. They are financed by rich Arab and Western European states. Best military specialists from these states are working with these terrorists. Of course they have a strong and powerful military machine,” he said.
QUOTE
early December, the Chechen leader also pledged to avenge the death of a Russian citizen beheaded by IS terrorists over his alleged ties with Russian Federal Security Service, the FSB.

“Chechens remember, know and will not leave this unanswered. Those who slaughtered our citizen will not live long,” Interfax quoted him as saying.

US Military Urban Combat Training: Virtual Reality Could Be Used To Prepare For Fighting In Megacities

user posted image

QUOTE
U.S. ground troops from across the main military branches will not be prepared to fight in urban environments in the future, including global megacities that are surrounded by expansive shanty towns, high ranking U.S. military officials have said.
QUOTE
"We are going to be on the top floor of a skyscraper evacuating civilians and helping people. The middle floor, we might be detaining really bad people that we’ve caught. On the first floor we will be down there killing them," said Brig. Gen. Julian Alford,
QUOTE
Among the various possibilities that emerged at the conference is augmented virtual reality, which shows a real landscape and other troops but can, using head-mounted displays, superimpose or overlay virtual reality images and effects such as vehicles, explosions and aircraft dropping bombs.

QUOTE
“That type of technology, you could go into a building and any building could become an augmented facility at that point because you are able to augment the building with those types of battlefield effects,”
QUOTE
One of the main problems is how to train for the unique military environment of massive city.
QUOTE
“We can’t afford to go out and build a 20-story skyscraper at Twentynine Palms or stack shipping containers that high, we are just not going to do that,”

Russian Arms Transfers and Asian Military Modernisation

user posted image

QUOTE
The Russian defence industry is a critical segment of the country’s economy, employing at least 2.5 million workers, and accounting for 20 per cent of all manufacturing jobs.
QUOTE
According to data put out by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), defence spending (in constant 2011 U.S. dollars) fell from US$371 billion in 1988 to a low of US$21 billion in 1998.
QUOTE
Between 2004 and 2014, military expenditures grew from US$41 billion to US$91.7 billion (in constant 2011 U.S. dollars)
QUOTE
Consequently, currently 75-80 per cent of defence industry output is for the Russian military, and about 20-25 per cent is exported
QUOTE
According to Russian sources, in 2014 Russian defence firms exported more than $15 billion worth of arms to more than 60 countries, and signed almost $14 billion worth of new contracts.
QUOTE
It is worth noting that the depreciation of the Russian ruble has actually aided overseas arms sales, as Russian arms exports are paid for in foreign currencies
QUOTE
over the past decade Moscow has been able to expand its customer base within the Asia Pacific, especially within Southeast Asia. In recent years, it has found new buyers in Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand.
