Indonesian Navy inducts two Baron G58 aircraft as intermediate trainers

Ridzwan Rahmat, Singapore - IHS Jane's Navy International
23 December 2015

The Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia - Angkatan Laut, or TNI-AL) has commissioned two Beechcraft Baron G58 aircraft as intermediate trainers with a training unit of the service's naval aviation wing.

The aircraft were inducted into the service's 200 Skuadron Udara in a ceremony presided over by TNI-AL chief-of-staff Admiral Ade Supandi on 23 December in Surabaya, the service announced on 24 December.

"The training aircraft will fulfil training needs in preparation for the delivery of future naval platforms," the admiral said. The TNI-AL is anticipating the delivery of NC212-200 and CN235-200 aircraft from local state-owned company PT Dirgantara.

According to IHS Jane's World Navies , the TNI-AL operates a number of other aircraft types for its training needs with 200 Skuadron Udara.

ISIS suffers embarrassing defeat in southern Damascus as 4,000 terrorists flee Hajar Al-Aswad and Al-Qadam

user posted image

It has been nearly 3 years since the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has last entered the large Damascene city of Hajjar Al-Aswad and the Al-Qadam District; however, the pro-government forces are eager to make up for lost time, as the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) finally bids farewell to this part of southern Damascus.

For several months, ISIS has been entrenched in the city of Hajjar Al-Aswad (Black Stone) and the large Damascene district of Al-Qadam, leaving many bystanders in fear of the aforementioned terrorist group’s intentions to advance north towards the Syrian capital of Damascus.

Luckily, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), the National Defense Forces (NDF), and the Palestinian resistance all kept the terrorist group in check in southern Damascus, while the Islamist rebels of Jaysh Al-Islam (Army of Islam) and Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group) either colluded with or lost ground to the ISIS forces.

On Thursday morning, ISIS agreed to abandon their posts at the Al-Qadam District and the city of Hajar Al-Aswad, as long as they were provided transportation to the Al-Raqqa Governorate from the Syrian capital.

According to a military source inside of the Damascus City, 4,000 ISIS fighters are being transferred to the Al-Raqqa Governorate after negotiations between rival Palestinian groups proved successful.

This is a major victory for the Syrian Government as they are now in control of a large chunk of southern Damascus, which was once the most volatile area inside the Syrian capital.

Germany delivers first of four attack submarines to Egypt

user posted image

QUOTE
The submarines are being built by the German construction juggernaut ThyssenKrupp. The company’s share price jumped by over seven percent after completion of the deal was announced on Wednesday night.

The submarines are being built in the northern coastal city of Kiel, which is famed for its ship-building and last week exported the fifth of six new ThyssenKrupp vessels bound for Israel.

The first two of the four submarines are thought to have been ordered in 2011, though the deal only became public in August 2012 following statements by Egyptian Rear Admiral Osama Ahmed al-Jundi.

Russia Delivers S-300 Missile Defense System to Kazakhstan

user posted image

QUOTE
Special delivery for Kazakhstan. Who doesn’t love a good free-shipping deal during the holiday season? The Russian government just completed the delivery of an S-300 missile defense system to Kazakhstan for free. The delivery will speed up missile defense cooperation between Moscow and Astana—the two countries aspire to a common, networked missile defense system. The Russian government is planning a similar expansion of missile defense with other members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), a grouping of former Soviet states. “We have approved for 2016 a plan of work of the Defense Ministers’ Council of the CIS countries and a plan of common steps on the joint air defense system,” Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu noted, according to Russian media reports.

ISIS terrorists are using human shields and have booby-trapped entire houses in Ramadi in a bid to prevent the Iraqi army from retaking the strategically important town.

An estimated 100 jihadis are surrounded by Iraqi troops who are being supported by US airstrikes, who are targeting the remaining ISIS strong points.

ISIS captured the city, which is about 60 miles from Baghdad, in May. The defeat was a major propaganda victory for the terrorists.

Sudan Plays Both Sides of the Saudi-Iranian Cold War

Each of these vessels has two AK-630 30-millimeter gatling guns for self-defense against anti-ship missiles. Zubrs can also provide their own fire support in an invasion, as each one has two 140-millimeter Ogon multiple rocket launchers with 22 barrels.
QUOTE
China also purchased Greece's entire fleet of four Zubr hovercraft. This will bring China's fleet to a total of eight hovercraft.

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA-IRAQ BATTLESPACE, DEC. 24, 2015

Over the past six days, Russian warplanes have conducted 302 sorties and hit 1,093 terrorist targets in the provinces of Idlib, Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor, Hama and Homs. Russian Su-34 bombers destroyed a large terrorist training camp in the Syrian province of Idlib hosting fighters from Turkey and CIS states. Also, Russian warplanes have destroyed two oil storage facilities, three oil-extraction plants along with dozens of fuel pumps in the Deir ez-Zor province.

Moreover, six off-road vehicles equipped with heavy machine guns and three militants’ trucks were destroyed in the Homs province. And an Ahrar ash-Sham militant group’s command post was destroyed in the Aleppo province.

On Wednesday evening, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) took control of the farms north of the Marj Al-Sultan Military Airport after a heavy fight with Nusra and Jaysh Al-Islam and advanced north towards the town of Harasta in the East Ghouta. Currently, intense clashes are still going between the SAA and terrorists near the P-35 Radar Base. In the Deir Ezzor province, ISIS launched a massive offensive that targeted the government-controlled districts of Al-Sina’a, Al-Rusafa and ‘Amal located along the vast Euphrates River.

Initially, hundreds ISIS militants stormed the SAA defenses at the Al-Sina’a District’s eastern flank. After the heavy clashes, militants moved deeper into the district but found the SAA has fire superiority in combat. Thus, ISIS was pushed to retreat. According to the SAA reports, over 40 militants were killed. Separately, ISIS launched counter-attacks in Al-Rusafa, Al-‘Amal, and the Old Airport District.

Iraqi Security Forces, Kurdish Peshmerga, local Yazidi militia, supported by the Iraqi and US-led coalition air forces are fighting to regain control over the city of Ramadi from ISIS. According to the Iraqi government, the military captured parts of the city on Tuesday and are advancing toward the government complex in the central district of Ramadi. It’s confirmed that the Iraqi and coalition warplanes have been conducting airstrikes in neighborhoods around the complex. The progress in recapturing Ramadi is slowed down by the decision to ban local Shia militias from fighting in the area. With this, the US and US-backed Iraqi officials are trying to prevent the grow of the militias’ influence in the country.

Should the Falklands be scared? Argentine military to be ‘BEEFED UP’ under new president

Earlier this year, it was reported that Argentina had 20 Mirage F1 fighter jets from Spain within their military ranks.

It was also said to have been working on a deal with Israel to buy 18 Kfir fighter jets - a negotiation which at the time sparked fears of a fresh Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands.

THE LAST FIGHTER PILOT

QUOTE
The F-35 is so high-tech, so automated, so smart, so connected, that in May, the secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, declared: The F-35 “should be, and almost certainly will be, the last manned strike fighter aircraft the Department of the Navy will ever buy or fly.”

QUOTE
“You employ the tactics you were taught, and you will kill them before they ever see you,” Stenger says, “well beyond visual range.”
QUOTE
Nearly every air-to-air engagement on the planet has been well beyond visual range since the early 1990s.
QUOTE
As networked warfare has risen, incidents of aerial combat have decreased. Since 1990, only 54 fighter jets have been shot down globally

“So maybe our future fighter jets resemble unmanned long-range strike platforms.”

In a future dogfight against nations like China or Russia, Stillion envisions those drones flying in a picket line deep into enemy territory, and acting as lookouts. The bomber would follow about 100 miles behind them.

At that point, the bomber team would fire long range missiles (good for about 250 miles), taking out up to six enemy jets at once.

Here’s what the next big Middle Eastern crisis could look like

user posted image

QUOTE
Avi Isaacharoff reported for The Times of Israel that Israeli intelligence officials believe Hezbollah now has an arsenal of 150,000 rockets, a 50% increase over an estimate from May 2015
QUOTE
Hezbollah is still stockpiling weapons for use outside of Syria and against a conventional military with sea and air capabilities, “continuing its efforts to acquire SA-17 and SA-22 ground-to-air missiles as well as P-800 Oniks air-to-sea missiles,” Issacharoff reports.
QUOTE
The Russian weapons system off of which the SA-22 surface-to-air missile is modeled can hit targets at up to 60,000 feet from a distance of up to 12 miles. The P-800, meanwhile, can carry an over 400-pound warhead at distances of up to 180 miles.
QUOTE
With its growing stock of advanced weaponry, Hezbollah can fend off an Israeli counterattack long enough for the conflict to be internationalized and for the UN and other actors to call for a halt in hostilities
QUOTE
Hezbollah is the most capable nonstate armed force in the Middle East, with an advanced arsenal, a powerful state sponsor, and a core of battle-hardened fighters and commanders.

Most likely a T-55 with its gun removed. A command tank will usually be completely festooned with antennae for its communications gear and will have a dummy gun barrel in place of the real gun, so outwardly it will look somewhat like a normal tank, not a gunless tank.

Korea to sign contract on KF-X next week

Published : 2015-12-24 16:48
Updated : 2015-12-24 16:48

South Korea's state arms procurement agency said Thursday it will sign a formal contract next week on its fighter jet development project, known as KF-X.

The Defense Acquisition Procurement Administration plans to ink the deal with Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd., the country's sole aircraft maker.

"Negotiations over the formal contract on the KF-X program are going well. It seems to be possible to sign it around Dec. 28," the agency official said on the condition of anonymity.

South Korea hopes to produce its own fighter jet to replace the aging fleet of F-4s and F-5s by mid-2020.

Last month, KAI secured Indonesia's assurance that it will pay for 20 percent of the total cost expected to reach $15 billion.

Under the contract between the DAPA and KAI, six test planes will be manufactured by 2025, according to the official.

The KF-X project received a boost from the U.S. pledge to transfer some of its jet technologies. But South Korea faces a daunting task of finding an alternative as the U.S. made it clear that four core technologies will be excluded.

Those are the active electronically scanned radar, infrared search-and-rescue system, electro-optical targeting pod and radio frequency jammer.

South Korea, meanwhile, plans to launch a task force for the project on Jan. 1 next year that will be composed of 70-80 officials and experts. (Yonhap)

So it is an Israeli Tiran APC. Probably captured by Hezbollah from the South Lebanese Army (SLA), a Lebanese Christian militia allied with Israel. They received a lot of support and gear from the IDF during their existence, but was disbanded in early 2000.
