Turkish Defense Industry Successfully Conducts Armed Drone Test ![]() QUOTE The armed drone Bayraktar was jointly produced by two Turkish private companies Baykar and Kale Kalip, although the firms do not yet have a contract to supply the Turkish military with tactical drones, the media outlet said. "We are assessing [their] work," the procurement official said. "We may either sign a modification contract to arm the drones currently in our inventory or sign a separate contract to acquire armed drones in the future." In Bayraktar’s most recent tests, the armed drone was able to reach an altitude of 18,000 feet over 24 hours, it features indigenous software and electronic systems as well as a maximum payload of 650 kilograms, the producers told Defense News. http://sputniknews.com/military/20151221/1...rkey-drone.html |

Black box from Russian jet downed by Turkey damaged ![]() QUOTE MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian military says aviation experts so far have failed to retrieve information from a flight data recorder from a Russian warplane downed by Turkey last month. Turkey shot down the Russian Su-24 bomber at the border with Syria on Nov. 24, saying it violated its airspace for 17 seconds despite repeated warnings. Russia insists the plane never entered Turkish airspace. Lt.-Gen. Sergei Bainetov, a deputy head of the Russian military's flight safety service, said Monday an inspection of the recorder has revealed that 13 of 16 microchips on its data board are nearly ruined and the remaining three are damaged. He said experts will attempt to retrieve information from them, but the effort will take a long time. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/ap/articl...ey-damaged.html |

Jaish al-Fateh in trouble as SAA cuts rebel supply line to Aleppo ![]() Yesterday, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), with the support of various Shia paramilitaries groups like Hezbollah, successfully captured the strategic town of Khan Touman and the village of Qarasi in southern Aleppo in a region which has witnessed defiant rebel resistance for years. This afternoon, the Syrian Arab Army ensued on a blitzkrieg-like offensive and rapidly advanced west of Khan Touman, thereby capturing Kalidiyah village and several hundred meters along the M5-Highway. These areas have been rebel-held since the summer of 2012; thus, insurgents were unable to set up defensive positions in sufficient time to prevent the government offensive and were effectively completely overpowered. Strategically, this renders the M5-Highway, which crosses through Idlib governorate to Aleppo city, utterly useless for Islamist rebels loyal to the Jaish al-Fateh coalition. Momentarily, the front line has evened out; however, government troops have made steady regional advances in the past two months largely due to Russian Airstrikes and elite Shi’a reinforcements pouring in from Lebanon, Iraq and Iran. Nevertheless, this Syrian Army offensive has come at a heavy cost as Jaish al-Fateh rebels have put the US-supplied TOW-missile to effective use against government vehicles in the area causing many to be destroyed. The SAA is currently attempting to relieve the pressure on Aleppo city while pushing towards the government-enclave and Shi’a towns of Fuah and Kafrhaya near Idlib city. Furthermore, this maneuver does seem to approach Nubl and al-Zahraa from the south. Despite a seemingly illogical offensive route, one cannot rule out the possibility of the Syrian Army launching an all-out attack from this direction towards the predominately Shi’a towns of Nubl and al-Zahraa. http://www.almasdarnews.com/article/jaish-...line-to-aleppo/ This post has been edited by BorneoAlliance: Dec 22 2015, 02:44 AM |

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA, DEC. 21, 2015 The Russian Aerospace Defense Forces are continuing to conduct airstrikes destroying terrorists in Syria. According to the Ministry of Defense of Russia, warplanes conduct about 60 sorties per day targeting positions of ISIS, al Nusra and other terrorist groups in the Aleppo, Homs, Deir ez-Zor, Latakia, Damascus, Hama, Idlib, Raqqa, Hasakah provinces. The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and allies have been pushing terrorists from the crucial regions of the country, step by step. In East Aleppo, the pro-government forces have broken the ISIS militants’ counterattack in Narsallah and captured Najara and al-Jaberia. Dozens militants have been killed. In South Aleppo, Jaish al-Fatah terrorist alliance lost about 60 militants in clashes against the Syrian forces in recent days. On Dec. 20, the SAA’s 4th Mechanized Division and Hezbollah captured the strategic town of Khan Touman and its surrounding farms from the militants of Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham and Al-Nusra. Prior to capturing the town, the Syrian forces seized the imperative village of Al-Qarassi after a series of firefights with Faylaq Al-Sham, Jabhat Al-Nusra, Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, and Harakat Nouriddeen Al-Zinki. The Russia-made T-90 battle tanks played a crucial role during battles in the region, as its protective armor and durability made it difficult for the enemy combatants to halt their advance. US-supplied TOW missile systems can’t inflict enough damage to T-90. In North Latakia, the pro-government forces are advancing to take control of the border with Turkey. The movement there are complicated by a mountainous terrain and a high number of supplies providing by Turkey to the terrorists. The city of Homs is almost controlled by the Syrian government. Week ago, militants has started to move from the city. However, the province’s northern part is controlled by ISIS and Al Nusra. The clashes are going there. The heavy clashes without any success for any side also continuing around Palmyra. The Eastern Ghouta and area along the Damascus-Homs highway are a center of the clashes around Damascus despite the army’s successes in the area. The town of Marj al Sultan and the Marj al Sultan airport were liberated by the government forces last week. According to the SAA’s reports, since the start of the Russian military operations in Syria, the government forces have taken control of about 60 towns, villages and other infrastructure objects. Meanwhile, the US is building its first airbase in Syria. It is supposed to be located in the northern Kurdish region. Thus, the US and NATO will continue to participate in the Syrian conflict and will apparently rise their military presence in the region in the nearest future. Thus, they show that the West isn’t interested in any political solution which respects the interests of the Syrian people and their legitimate government. http://southfront.org/international-milita...ia-dec-21-2015/ |

QUOTE Could Malaysian Interest in JF-17 Signal Export Sales for Pakistan? By Usman Ansari 2:47 p.m. EST December 21, 2015 ISLAMABAD — Malaysia is considering the JF-17 Thunder aircraft as an option for its air force modernization program. However, despite analysts saying the aircraft is well suited to Malaysia's requirements, it's unclear whether the country will actually buy the Sino-Pakistan jet. The uncertainty is especially so when considering entrenched opposition from other suppliers already well established in this area of defense sales and machinations by Pakistan's arch-rival India. Malaysian interest in the JF-17 was signaled by its High Commissioner to Pakistan Dr. Hasrul Sani, who according to the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), discussed the fighter against the backdrop of boosting the bilateral relationship in general. Malay-Pakistani relations are wide-ranging, but Pakistani defense equipment sales to Malaysia have halted at anti-tank and anti-aircraft missile systems. However, Kaiser Tufail, analyst, and former air force pilot, said he thinks consideration for the JF-17 may move to a higher level. "I think the Malaysians might be genuinely interested because Pakistan has a respectable defense industry, with the products being considerably cheaper compared to the West due to cheap labor," he said. "These products have been amply proven in the hands of very professional armed forces. These are reasons enough for many developing countries to look for defense hardware from Pakistan," he added. Malaysia has long indicated a desire to replace its remaining US supplied F-5E/F fighter aircraft, and the MiG-29s it acquired from Russia in the 1990s. This may result in an order for 36-40 aircraft, according to information available on the program. Though the JF-17 appears to be very well suited to Malaysia's requirements and would complement the heavier Su-30MKM Flanker fighters in service, Malaysian sources indicate privately that the JF-17 may face an uphill battle because European and US fighters already stated as being under consideration. However, Brian Cloughley, analyst and former Australian defense attache to Islamabad, said he also believes the Malaysian interest to be genuine, but cautions there is more to consider. "Heads of diplomatic missions don't usually say things publicly that aren't accurate," he said. "So there is probably something in this, in that interest appears to have been expressed, but the devil is as always in the detail, and there will have to be agreement by Beijing to any movement towards a deal." Coughley added: "If that is arranged it will be behind well-closed doors and nobody will know what the [Chinese] terms are." Read more: http://www.defensenews.com/story/defense/p...sales/77704460/ |

Draken's A-4K Skyhawks Provide Private Aggressor Duties At Nellis Air Force Base ![]() QUOTE Although this current contract is just a year-long test to see how Draken’s ex-Royal New Zealand Air Force A-4k Skyhawks and their crews do in the aggressor/adversary support roll, it is only a matter of time until the USAF will have no other choice but to widely integrate commercial adversary support into their “red air” training portfolio. QUOTE We are seeing the USAF already coming to terms with this reality by introducing T-38 Talon associate squadrons alongside their F-22 counterparts. It is simply wasteful flying a $50,000+ per hour F-22 against other F-22s for intercept practice or for simulating cruise missiles threats and other scenarios.. http://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/drakens-a...ties-1749193650 |

America's Newest Warship, the USS Ralph Johnson, Sets Sail So while just one Zumwalt sails the ocean America's naval fleet—unlike the Russian one—continues to grow. The above timelapse shows the latest warship to join the fleet, the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer the USS Ralph Johnson. The video shows final three days of work before the ship was set into the water—the Johnson won't officially be christened until 2016. The USS Ralph Johnson (named after a Vietnam-era Marine who saved two comrades by jumping on top of a grenade) is the 30th active-duty Arleigh Burke-class missile destroyer to built by Huntington Ingalls Industries, by far the largest manufacturer of U.S. Naval vessels. Since the commission of the first Arleigh Burke-class destroyer (named, appropriate, the USS Arleigh Burke) in 1991, there have been 61 of the destroyers built. The Arleigh Brooke program was on the way out, as the Navy prepared to transition to using the stealthy and futuristic Zumwalt-class destroyer. Budget cuts and internecine bureaucratic infighting radically reduced the size of Zulwalt program, and the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer has stepped in to take over. So while just one Zumwalt sails the ocean, there are 62 (soon to be 63) Arleigh Burke-class destroyers out there. http://www.popularmechanics.com/military/n...hnson-set-sail/ |

QUOTE RMN Plans To Reduce Vessel Class Category LUMUT, Dec 21 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) plans to reduce class category of its vessels to ensure smooth and cost-effective management. RMN chief Admiral Datuk Seri Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin said the plan was made after most of the vessels used in their operations had been in existence for ages. "So far, we have 18 vessel classes and we will try to reduce it to only five, namely Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), New Generation Patrol Vessel (NGPV), Frigates, Corvett, and Mines Counter Vessel (MCMV). "However, the number of vessels for each class will be increased and this will also reduce the management costs and beef up defence capabilities, especially in the country's waters," he told reporters here today. Kamarulzaman said all 18 vessel classes which had spanned over 20 years were purchased from various countries like United Kingdom (UK), Germany, France, Italy and Korea, a few years ago. "Due to the many vessel classes, the level of vessel management has become very challenging and costly. "We will give priority to the vessels built in the country to enhance the national defence industry, in which foreign companies need to forge collaboration with local companies," he added. Commenting on the banning of vape or electronic cigarettes at all military camps, Ahmad Kamarulzaman said he would support any decision made by Armed Forces chief Gen Tan Sri Dr Zulkifeli Mohd Zin. "All naval bases are just waiting for instructions from the higher authorities regarding the ban of vape," he said. On Saturday, Zulkifeli had announced that the Armed Forces were looking into the possibility of banning electronic cigarettes or vape at military camps nationwide. -- BERNAMA http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v8/ge/newsg....php?id=1201331 |

QUOTE PHL's first strategic sealift vessel to be delivered May 2016 CLARK AIR BASE, ANGELES CITY, PAMPANGA, Dec. 21 (PNA) --- The country's first strategic-sealift vessel (SSV) will be delivered to the Philippine Navy (PN) in May 2016, a military official confirmed on Monday. "The ship is now 87 percent complete and will be launched this coming January (2016). The SSV will be delivered sometime this May," Navy spokesperson Col. Edgard Arevalo said at the sidelines of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) 80th founding anniversary Monday. Eight seven percent completion means the ship's keel, propulsion, engine and other major systems are now installed. The second SSV, which is now 46 percent complete, will be delivered in 2017, Arevalo added. When asked if the SSVs are to be armed, Arevalo said defensive armament of the ships will be installed by the PN. The Philippines has a two-SSV order with Persero for PHP3.87 billion which is sourced from the AFP Modernization Fund. The SSV acquisition project for the PN was initiated upon the approval of Acquisition Decision Memorandum Number 2012-060 by Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin last Oct. 30, 2013. The Department of National Defense declared Persero as the Single Calculated Responsive Bidder with a bidding price of PHP3.87 billion on Nov. 18, 2014. The SSVs are programmed to be the PN’s floating command center carrying out their main purpose as military sealift and transport vessels and also for humanitarian assistance and disaster response. Further, these vessels are critical assets for civil-military operations due to their capability of transporting large number of soldiers, logistics, and supplies. Moreover, each SSV has the capacity to house three helicopters. The Navy’s Augusta Westland-109s are programmed to be on-board components of these vessels. These forthcoming landing platform dock strategic sealift vessels will improve the transport capability of the PN and boost the defense capabilities of the country. Free Syrian Army: Hezbollah is lying, we killed Kuntar, not Israel ![]() QUOTE While Israel continues to keep quiet on the assassination of Samir Kuntar, not officially addressing reports that it was behind the hit, members of the Free Syrian Army released a video clip on Monday morning claiming that they were responsible for killing the Hezbollah terrorist. In a YouTube video featuring armed rebels from the Free Syrian Army, a spokesman denied Hezbollah's claims that the "Zionist entity" was behind the attack, saying instead that they had managed to assassinate Kuntar and his companions. The Free Syrian Army said that "the Party of Satan," a play on the meaning of Hezbollah in Arabic (Party of God), had made the claims that Israel was behind the assassination in order to demoralize the Free Syrian Army and cancel out their rival group's achievements. http://m.jpost.com/Middle-East/Free-Syrian...TNERTk3MDJGQjA= |
