China Arms Coast Guard Ship With Sophisticated Weaponry, Raising Serious Concerns Among South China Sea Claimant-Countries ![]() QUOTE Beijing has reportedly equipped the ship with 76-millimeter rapid fire guns, auxiliary guns, and anti-aircraft machine guns, which, military observers said, has raised serious concerns from countries which have overlapping claims with Beijing in the international waterway. QUOTE The US Office of Naval Intelligence released a 2015 report detailing Beijing's rapid expansion of its naval power. It said that China's Coast Guard ships and law enforcement fleet is larger than the combined naval fleet of the Philippines, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. http://www.chinatopix.com/articles/76135/2...h-china-sea.htm |

US drone crashes in Turkey’s south
![]() QUOTE A predator drone belonging to the U.S. military crashed in a field after taking off from the İncirlik Air Base in the southern province of Adana early on Feb. 3. Authorities conducted examinations in the field where the drone crashed in the Doğankent neighborhood of Yüreğir district, some 20 kilometers from the İncirlik Air Base. Police took security measures at the scene and two trailer trucks were brought to the area to transport the drone back to the military base. In an official statement on its website, the 39th Comptroller Squadron announced that the MQ-1 Predator crashed at 1:40 a.m. on Feb. 3 due to a “mechanical breakdown.” “According to initial evaluations, there was a mechanical breakdown with the drone. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the accident with certainty,” the statement said. Another MQ-1 predator drone crashed in the Kumlu district of the southern district of Hatay near Turkey’s border with Syria on Oct. 20, 2015. Turkish jets also shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle of unknown nationality in the southern province of Kilis on Oct. [sos] |

Russian generals killed in Syria’s Turkmen Mountain: Sources QUOTE Fifteen pro-regime military officials -- including four Russian generals -- have been killed by opposition forces in northwestern Syria near the border with Turkey, Syrian opposition sources said Wednesday. QUOTE One of the slain Russian generals, identified only as "Yuri", was reportedly coordinating regime attacks in Turkmen Mountain, the sources added. http://aa.com.tr/en/world/4-russian-genera...-sources/514872 This post has been edited by BorneoAlliance: Feb 4 2016, 07:49 AM |

This Animated Map Of ISIS Expansion In Syria, Iraq And Beyond Is Unsettling QUOTE We love maps and infographics at Foxtrot Alpha, and animated ones are that much better. The video below depicting the expansion of ISIS controlled territory over time is especially interesting. After explosive expansion in 2013-2014, now it seems that when any territory is taken back from the Islamic State they just expand elsewhere. Also of interest is just how little ground has been taken back from ISIS even after almost a year and a half of coalition combat operations against it. On the other hand, it must be noted that some of the wide areas shown on the map that ISIS supposedly controls is just empty desert, and the same can be said for much of the non-ISIS controlled areas highlighted in purple. http://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/this-anim...-and-1756464711 |

Homs destroyed: Russian drone footage shows devastation in Syria QUOTE Once nicknamed the “cradle of the revolution” and home to more than 600,000 people, the footage shows children walking through deserted streets lined with bombed-out homes. The footage was captured by Russia Works, a drone-filming company owned by the Russian state broadcaster, VGTRK. The drone was operated by a cameraman from the service. http://www.middleeasteye.net/news/fresh-dr...-homs-116177962 |

Russia could steamroll into the capitals of NATO’s most exposed ![]() QUOTE In the most optimistic scenario for NATO, Moscow would be able to conquer all the way to Estonia’s capital Tallinn in the course of 60 hours, according to a new report from the think tank RAND Corp. QUOTE Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are the three NATO nations most exposed to Russia. Situated between Russia, Russia’s principle ally Belarus, the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, and the Baltic Sea, the three nations — with the exception of a sliver of Lithuania — lack any shared borders with fellow NATO nations. QUOTE As current NATO force structures stand in Europe, RAND found that the military organization “cannot successfully defend the territory of its most exposed members.” In the best case scenarios for NATO, Russia was prevented from reaching the outskirts either the Latvian or Estonian capitals for 60 hours. ![]() In the more dire scenarios, Russian forces were able to make it to the capitals in only 36 hours. QUOTE “On the one hand, one of [NATO's] disadvantages is its complex process of decision making. It is because NATO has 28 members who have to reach consensus on all conclusions,” QUOTE However, RAND notes that simple steps would change the calculus to enough of a degree as to prevent Russia’s conquest of the Baltics. By deploying about seven brigades in Europe, NATO could ensure that it would have enough firepower to at least dissuade a Russian offensive. http://www.businessinsider.my/russia-could...XEmLRb69Vjus.97 This post has been edited by BorneoAlliance: Feb 4 2016, 08:03 AM |

From ejector seats that could kill to a computer system pilots can't log into: Pentagon F-35 fighter jet report reveals massive problems still facing 'most expensive weapon in history' ![]() QUOTE Pilots under 136 pounds aren't allowed to fly any F-35 variant. Pilots under 165 pounds have a 1-in-4 chance of death and 100 percent chance of serious neck injury upon ejecting, according to the testing office. QUOTE It also fails to detect if it's been flying too fast and 'randomly prevented user logins' into its computerised control system. QUOTE In the first live firing test, three bursts of one 30 rounds and two 60 rounds each were fired from the aircraft's four-barrel, 25-millimeter Gatling gun. QUOTE The test pilot condemned the jet's performance at the time, claiming it performed so appallingly that he deemed it completely inappropriate for fighting other aircraft within visual range. QUOTE He even criticised the half-million-dollar custom-made helmet, supposedly designed to give the pilot a 360-degree view outside the plane, but which he claimed made it difficult to move his head inside the cramped cockpit. QUOTE 'The helmet was too large for the space inside the canopy to adequately see behind the aircraft,' he wrote in his five-page report. QUOTE The jets were meant to enter service in 2012, but Sir Nick Harvey, who served as the Minister of State for Armed Forces between 2010 and 2012, said that there was 'not a cat in hell's chance' that the jet would be in British service by 2018. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/art...on-history.html |

WATCH NIGERIA'S FIRST CONFIRMED DRONE STRIKE -- AGAINST BOKO HARAM QUOTE Nigeria joins a dubious club of the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Pakistan, and Iraq who have all used armed drones in modern war. QUOTE The CH-3 is an armed adaption of earlier Chinese reconnaissance drones, and has been in Nigeria’s inventory since at least 2014. In the video released of the attack, there’s a large blast, and the Nigerian Air Force claims they hit a logistics base belonging to Boko Haram, possibly an ammunition storehouse. Nigeria, like Iraq, appears to buy their armed drones from China. http://www.popsci.com/watch-nigerias-first...ed-drone-strike |

QUOTE(BorneoAlliance @ Feb 4 2016, 07:49 AM) This is wishful thinking propaganda. No respectable General in any army would be anywhere near any sort of battlefield these days other than the occasional parade inspections. It's simply not their jobs. |

Kuwait Fails to Sign Typhoon Contract
(Source: compiled by Defense-Aerospace.com; published Feb 02, 2016) PARIS --- Kuwait failed Jan 31 to sign a contract to buy 28 Eurofighter Typhoon combat aircraft from the Italian government, raising questions about its commitment to a deal it initialled in September and which at the time was due to be sealed “in a matter of weeks.” An Italian industry source confirmed that the contract had not been signed, but said that the Italian side was “very positive” about the agreement, and expressed confidence it would be signed “sooner rather than later.” A spokesman for Finmeccanica declined comment Feb. 02. Although the Jan. 31 date had not been officially confirmed for the signature, it was leaked to several Italian media by unidentified “defense ministry sources,” leading to widespread expectations it would take place in Kuwait. Italian Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti was preparing to travel to Kuwait for the ceremony. This is not the first time the contract signature has been put off; according to Italian media, the causes are unspecified “procedural reasons,” the choice of lightweight anti-ship missile; or disagreement as to where Kuwait’s Typhoon pilots would be trained, depending on which report one believes. In parallel to the repeated delays in contract signature, the Kuwaiti air force chief has been publicly plugging the Boeing F-18E/F Super Hornet, which Kuwait was planning to buy before unexpectedly opting for the Typhoon, a reversal that some observers interpret as a negotiating ploy to encourage the US government to authorize the sale, which it has blocked for the past two years. No new date had been set for the contract signature. This post has been edited by waja2000: Feb 4 2016, 02:06 PM |

New Details Emerge About China’s New Cutting-Edge Tank ![]() QUOTE The website confirms earlier reports that the vehicle weighs roughly 35 tons and is equipped with a 105-mm gun. While the website claims that the vehicle requires a crew of four, it’s cannon features an autoloader, which would eliminate the need for one crewmember. QUOTE The gun appears to have sights and optics based on the T-99A2, the Chinese army’s third generation main battle tank. It could also come with shell-tracking radar. Cannon rounds could be capable of penetrating 500-mm armor, and the tank could fire gun-launched missiles. The turret comes with detachable armor and is equipped with smoke grenade launchers and laser detectors. As for the tank’s chassis, Sina reports that the vehicle features a liquid-gas suspension. This allows the tank to "crouch" in order to more effectively conceal itself. The suspension also stabilizes the vehicle during targeting, allowing for improved accuracy. http://sputniknews.com/asia/20160204/10341...light-tank.html |

Britain top dog in unregulated shadow world of mercenaries – report ![]() QUOTE The report, titled ‘Mercenaries Unleashed: The brave new world of private military and security companies,’ examines the rise of the industry over the past 15 years. It argues that the time has come to ban mercenary firms and “end the privatization of war.” QUOTE Partly this is geographical, with 14 companies headquartered in the English town of Hereford, where Britain’s most famous special forces unit, the SAS, is based. War on Want estimates around 46 companies compete for recruits from the special forces. QUOTE Some of today’s work is for states. It is estimated that Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office handed out Iraq security contracts worth around £150 million (US$218 million) between 2007 and 2012. QUOTE Professor Chris Kinsey of King’s College told War on Want that British military firms are “following the cash cow ... putting armed contractors on ships is something the British are particularly good at, and they seem to be the ones dominating this particular type of security activity.” https://www.rt.com/uk/331158-britain-global...enary-industry/ |

Russia’s Uralvagonzavod company is ready to organize in Iran licensed production of the T-90S gun launcher-armed tanks if restrictions on military-technical cooperation with that country are lifted, the corporation’s deputy director general Alexey Zharich said on Wednesday. Russia’s main battle gun launcher-armed tank T-90S is equipped with an automated fire control system. It is a light tank (46.5 tons) with a low profile, which increases its survivability. http://tass.ru/en/defense/854186 |

QUOTE(MichaelJohn @ Feb 4 2016, 07:17 PM) replacing the whole lineup with APCs/LTs only or mix of them? Also Condor APC very easy to maintain and service. That's why they have lasted this long. Most of its key parts including engine, transmission and drive axle are the same as Daimler-Benz UNIMOG lorries so spare parts are cheap and can be ordered from civilian stocks. So the Condor APC basically a UNIMOG lorry with an armored shell.IMO, feels like we can get a few more years from them until the time comes As an amusing side note, I heard that any Daimler-Benz repair and service center are fully qualified to service and repair any Condor unit. Imagine that. |
