Israel warplanes figure out how to confuse Russia's 'unbeatable' air-defence system

user posted image

QUOTE
The sources said a Russian S-300 anti-aircraft system, sold to Cyprus 18 years ago but now located on the Greek island of Crete, had been activated during joint drills between the Greek and Israeli air forces in April-May this year.
QUOTE
The activation allowed Israel's warplanes to test how the S-300's lock-on system works, gathering data on its powerful tracking radar and how it might be blinded or bluffed.

In general, any system can be defeated this way or that

One defence source in the region said Greece had done so at the request of the United States, Israel's chief ally, on at least one occasion in the past year. It was unclear whether Israel had shared its findings with its allies.

"Part of the manoeuvres involved pitting Israeli jets against Greek anti-aircraft systems," one source said. Two other sources said the Crete S-300 was among the systems turned on.

The sources spoke to Reuters on condition they not be identified by name or nationality. The Greek and Israeli militaries declined to confirm or deny any use of the S-300 system during drills held in the Eastern Mediterranean last April-May or similar exercises in 2012 and 2010.

The final 750-tonne section of the Royal Navy's second flagship aircraft carrier, HMS Prince of Wales, has set sail for Rosyth.

Engineers described it as a 'major milestone', saying the Aft Island left BAE Systems's shipyard in Glasgow for Fife 10 weeks ahead of schedule.

The section will now sail 1,335 miles around the south of England and up to the east of Scotland on a barge to reach Rosyth.

ISIS can print authentic Syrian passports, may infiltrate US

user posted image

QUOTE
Islamic State has at least one specialized printing machine used to print authentic Syrian passports and plenty of blanks, US law enforcement agencies warned. Fraudulent passports would help terrorist infiltrators pose as refugees from Syria.
The concern that Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) can print authentic-looking passports was made public by FBI Director James Comey, who testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.

“The intelligence community is concerned that they [IS] have the ability, the capability to manufacture fraudulent passports, which is a concern in any setting,” Comey told the legislators.

The threat was highlighted last week in a 17-page security bulletin sent by the Homeland Security Investigations (HIS) to law enforcement, which said IS procured at least one passport printing machine during a raid on the city of Deir ez-Zour last summer, reported ABC News, which obtained the document.

Pentagon to change U.S. military personnel 'dog tags' for first time in 40 years

user posted image

QUOTE
ARLINGTON, Va., Dec. 10 (UPI) -- For the first time since the 1970s, the U.S. Department of Defense is implementing a change to the iconic aluminum identification tags worn around the necks of American servicemen and women.

The change is minor, but impactful. The only thing that will change about the "dog tags" is that they will no longer include servicemen and women's Social Security numbers -- an effort to mitigate identity theft.

"Identity theft is a very real threat for us right now, and so many people are not aware that our information is easily accessed," Staff Sgt. Kristen Duus said. "By removing socials from ID tags, one more step is being taken to protect ourselves and our identities."

The Social Security numbers will be replaced by a randomly-generated 10-digit Department of Defense identification number.

The Chinese Submarine Threat

user posted image

QUOTE
According to the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence, China’s attack submarine fleet consists mainly of diesel-electric boats (SSKs) – there are 57 of them, as well as five nuclear-powered attack submarines (SSNs). Of these, the more modern ones include two Shang SSNs, 12 Kilo SSKs, and 12 Yuan SSKs.
QUOTE
There have been numerous instances of American carrier groups being surprised by SSKs, friendly or otherwise, during either training exercises or regular deployments. The most famous is arguably the 2006 incident of a Song surfacing at a distance within firing range of the Kitty Hawk battle group.
QUOTE
And in a similar case in October this year, a Chinese boat reportedly “stalked” the Reagan carrier strike group (CSG), setting off alarm bells amongst U.S. defense officials. So the question is to what extent would PLAN submarines threaten U.S. carriers during a conflict?
QUOTE
The Chinese submarine force, while numerically large, would have an uphill task trying to find U.S. flattops as the real estate to be covered is vast – the Philippine Sea alone is some 5 million square kilometers in area.
QUOTE
And if a Chinese diesel boat were to locate a U.S. carrier without cueing, the former would find it difficult to continuously track the American vessel’s movement unless the sub’s position relative to the carrier is optimal at first contact.
QUOTE
Only the PLAN’s Shangs, with a top speed of some 30 knots, are capable of matching the CSG. The other Chinese SSN in service, the noisy Han, can only make up to 25 knots.
QUOTE
To compound matters, PLAN boats lack towed-array sonar that would enable them to detect targets from a much greater distance compared to hull sonar.
QUOTE
At this juncture, it is appropriate to establish the terms “mission kill” and “platform kill.” Simply put, platform kill occurs when the ship attacked is sunk, while a mission kills involves the ship being unable to perform its primary task(s).
QUOTE
Indeed, Howarth contends in China’s Rising Sea Power (p. 99.) that “(l)arge armored warships are inherently difficult to sink or disable with hits above the waterline, unless the missiles manage to penetrate a vital area of the ship such as its magazine or combat information center.”

Tiger Forces Eye the ISIS Stronghold of Deir Hafer in East Aleppo

user posted image

Last week, the Syrian Arab Army’s elite special operations division that is known as the “Tiger Forces” had surprised the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) by capturing three strategic sites near the Kuweries Military Airport, which further added to their overall progress in the Aleppo Governorate’s eastern countryside.

The Tiger Forces – in coordination with Hezbollah, Harakat Al-Nujaba, and the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Al-Salamiyah and Aleppo City – seized the villages of Shuwaylekh and Nasrallah, along with the imperative Rasm Al-‘Abid Production Facility; this ultimately paved the way for the pro-government forces to advance to Humaymah Al-Kabeera and Tal Al-‘Abyad.

This week, the Tiger Forces and their allies have intensified their assault on eastern Aleppo, striking ISIS at several villages near the Kuweires Military Airport, including Tal Al-Ahmar and Humaymah Al-Kabeera.

On Thursday morning, the Tiger Forces and their allies were able to break-through ISIS’ frontline defenses at the farms situated to the south of the Rasm Al-‘Abid Production Facility, resulting in the pro-government forces finally reaching the small hills that border Tal Al-Ahmar.

Should the Syrian Armed Forces capture Tal Al-Ahmar and Humaymah Al-Kabeera, they will have effectively built a large buffer-zone around the Kuweries Military Airport, while also advancing their positions around the ISIS stronghold of Deir Hafer.

US says airstrikes killed 350 ISIS terrorists in Ramadi

U.S. airstrikes in recent days killed an estimated 350 ISIS fighters holed up in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi, an American military spokesman said Thursday, suggesting the extremists lost as much as half of their defending force.

Col. Steve Warren, spokesman for the U.S. military command in Baghdad, told reporters at the Pentagon that there had been an estimated 600 to 1,000 ISIS fighters inside Ramadi, which the extremist group captured in May. Despite this depletion of ISIS forces, U.S. officials are reluctant to predict how long it will take to reclaim the city, which is the capital of Anbar province and a key to the Iraqi government's hopes of restoring its borders.

Defense Secretary Ash Carter, speaking separately Thursday, said Iraqi progress in retaking Ramadi has been "disappointingly slow."

Video — Chinese and U.S. Troops Train Together on the West Coast

QUOTE
It was the first time People’s Liberation Army troops trained on continental American soil. Previous exercises involving American and Chinese troops training together have occurred in China and Hawaii. Baby steps.

“I think this a great example of the United States and China working together for a common cause, a good cause,” said Cpt. Mike Sim, a U.S. Coast Guard officer stationed at the American embassy in Beijing. “We have more in common than we think.”

US Invasion Of Mideast Could Boost Defense Industry

user posted image

QUOTE
Calls by 2016 Republican presidential candidates and others for the United States to send ground troops to defeat the Islamic State group have elicited mixed reactions from the public and the Pentagon. But one group has responded enthusiastically over the past year to the prospect of a more aggressive war posture: For private defense contractors, a U.S. military invasion of Syria and Iraq presents a lucrative business opportunity.

Last week, the Intercept reported that Lockheed Martin Executive Vice President Bruce Tanner had told a group of investors that the aerospace manufacturer expects to see “indirect benefits” from the conflict in Syria. The firm, which is the single-largest recipient of U.S. defense contracts, is not alone in suggesting that more war could boost its bottom line.

Russian defense minister: Syria operation shows drones are irreplaceable in modern warfare

user posted image

QUOTE
MOSCOW, December 11 /TASS/. The military operation in Syria has shown that unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones are irreplaceable in modern warfare, Russian Defense Minister General of the Army Sergey Shoigu told a concluding Russian Defense Ministry board meeting on Friday.

"A leap forward has been made in the development of unmanned aviation. The experience of fulfilling combat tasks in Syria has shown that they (UAV) are irreplaceable in military hostilities," the minister said adding that the number of modern UAVs in the Russian army has increased to 1,720 in 2015 from just 180 drone aircraft in 2011.

CHINA'S NEW TRIO OF URBAN COMBAT ROBOTS

user posted image

QUOTE
Just in time for the holiday wishlists, China is now selling a team of robots for urban combat. Unveiled at the Beijing 2015 World Robot Conference, HIT Robot Group's it consists of three robots. There is an armed variant with an assault rifle, grenade, or an option for a recoilless rifle for heavier firepower, a recon variant equipped with NBC detectors, and finally, the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) robot designed to dispose of explosives and other hazards. Running on a 10-12kg tracked chassis, HIT Robot Group literature specifically mentions that the recon variant can be carried in a soldiers' backpack, while the other 2 variants would likely not due to the size of the weapons mounted. The systems are remotely operated, akin to the controls of US systems like the Packbot or SWORDS.
QUOTE
Cheng Deqiang, sales manager for HIT Robot Group, mentioned that a set of three robots costs roughly 1.5 million yuan (slight less than $230,000 USD). The Beijing police department is already a customer of these robots, with other Chinese police departments likely to follow suit, as may foreign customers. Along with the Low Altitude Guard combat laser, the debut of HIT Robot Group's fighting robot trio is also a good illustration of how China's defense marketplace is not just about the major Chinese arms manufacturers, but also includes many smaller defense contractors openly promote novel defense solutions for the future.

The Air Force's Parachuting Medics Are Jumping With a Genius New Triage Tool

user posted image

QUOTE
The ability for medics out in a remote locale to treat more than one patient at a time is a game-changer, says Gregory Burnett.

"Before BATDOK there was one PJ for one patient, and the pararescueman had to be in very close proximity to that patient to see the micro-display on the vital sensor," Burnett says. "BATDOK allows the pararescueman to be away from the patient and to monitor multiple patients simultaneously."

user posted image

QUOTE
Burnett is the chief engineer for a technology demonstration program called BATMAN (Battlefield Air Targeting Man-Aided Knowledge), which includes BATDOK. The kit is the result of work by a team of four developers, several engineers, and experts with the Air Force's 711th Human Performance Wing, Human Effectiveness Directorate, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

At its core, BATDOK combines a custom Android app with any FDA-approved wireless monitoring sensor. The app can run on a tablet, a smartphone, or the small pulse oximeter computer that PJs already carry when they jump.

"We don't have to use a smartphone or tablet. They're just the cheapest devices which run the Android platform," says Air Force First Lieutenant Max Gabreski, one of BATDOK's software developers. The team tried to take advantage of existing technology wherever they could, and not just by using Android. The wireless sensors, for example, link to the app via Bluetooth or 802.11 Wi-Fi connections.

INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA-IRAQ BATTLESPACE, DEC. 11, 2015

Syrian Arab Army (SAA), National Defense Forces (NDF) and Hezbollah are successfully advancing the in the Eastern parts of Aleppo province. The pro-government forces are now closing in on the terrorists’ positions in the town of Deir Hafer, approaching the town from several directions.

Meanwhile, the Russian strikers heavily pounded the terrorists’ gathering centers in the Darat Izza, Bashkoy, Keshtaar, Kafarina and Azaz regions of the province. Dozens of militants were killed. A large number of weapons and equipment was destroyed. The Syrian airstrikes hit terrorists’ positions in Jarouf, Ein al-Beida, al-Bab and Anadan.

On Wednesday, the SAA killed a senior commander of the “Thuwar al-Sham Brigades” terrorist group in a strategic town of Khan Touman. Abdul Rahim al-Hamoud was a defected lieutenant colonel of the SAA.

The SAA made important advances in the city of Dara’a. The field reports said that the loyalists are in a striking distance of the old Dara’a border crossing with Jordan which is commonly referred to as the Al-Jamrak crossing. Sporadic clashes between the SAA and militants were observed at the outskirts of al-Sheikh Meskeen and Atman.

ISIS militants in Iraq’s Ramadi have destroyed a lock on the Euphrates River which served as a bridge as pro-government forces advance further in the fight to retake the western militant-held city. It was the last bridge which connected the city center. Thus, 300 militants trapped in the city. This week, the Iraqi security forces and local militia seized control of a military complex north of the city and captured the neighborhood of Husaybah on the eastern outskirts of the city. Separately, Iraqi military and allied volunteer fighters cleared almost the whole area of the western neighborhoods of Ramadi.

Safe Skies: Russian Army Could Soon Receive Newest S-500 Air Defense System

user posted image

QUOTE
The S-500 Prometey, also known as 55R6M Triumfator-M, is a cutting-edge anti-aircraft and anti-ballistic missile system currently under development in Russia.

The long-range system, designed by Almaz Antey, is said to have a range of 600 kilometers (more than 370 miles). The system could simultaneously intercept up to ten ballistic missiles traveling at a speed of 5 kilometers per second.

"The S-500 missiles will be used only against the most important targets, such as intercontinental ballistic missiles, AWACS and jamming aircraft," Military Today noted.
