US updates jet-engine technology transfer policy with India

user posted image

QUOTE
US Defense Secretary Ash Carter informed Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar of the decision during the latter's visit to Washington this week and said it was made possible by the strengthening relationship between two countries.

"As a result of this policy update, the Secretary is confident that the United States will be able to expand cooperation in production and design of jet-engine components," the joint statement said.

It said the two sides looked forward to US companies working with their Indian counterparts "to submit transfer requests that will benefit from this updated policy."

The statement gave no details of the policy update and a Pentagon spokesman was unable to provide more information.

U.S. Strengthens Philippine Alliance With Military-Vehicle Delivery

user posted image

QUOTE
Mr. Obama also said the U.S. would spend $250 million helping Southeast Asian countries boost their maritime security capabilities, with the Philippines set to receive over a third of that money, while two secondhand U.S. C-130 Hercules transport aircraft are due to arrive in 2016.

Australia and South Korea have also agreed to provide used military equipment to Manila, and Japan is studying a Philippine request to do likewise.

Military trials due for GM hydrogen technology

user posted image

QUOTE
Working with General Motors, the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) said the low-end torque, silent running and ability to produce electricity and water on the battlefield make hydrogen fuel cells ideal for military use.
QUOTE
TARDEC director, Paul Rogers, added:"The potential capabilities hydrogen fuel cell vehicles can bring to the Warfighter are extraordinary, and our engineers and scientists are excited about the opportunity to exercise the limits of this demonstrator.”

US Navy’s Newest Ship Breaks Down in the Open Sea

user posted image

QUOTE
The US Navy combat ship Milwaukee broke down in the open sea on December 11, while transiting from Halifax, Canada, to Mayport, Florida, and ultimately its home port of San Diego.
According to the article, the ship was commissioned 20 days ago, on November 21.

The vessel was towed to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Virginia. Currently, the crew and technical consultants are evaluating the cause.

Initial indications are that fine metal debris collected in the lube oil filter caused the system to shut down, according to a Navy statement provided to Navy Times. The cause of metal debris in the oil system is not known and assessments are ongoing.

ISIS's chilling death march to the End of the World: Jihadists release video depicting their apocalyptic vision of a future battle culminating in Rome

QUOTE
The Islamic State has released a chilling new video showing its apocalyptic vision of a final showdown with the West, which includes jihadists advancing toward the Colosseum in Rome.

The disturbing footage, named 'Meeting at Dabiq', is focused on the notion of a deadly battle for world domination, in which ISIS 'believers' will fight western 'crusaders' in the Italian capital.

The Air Force Finally Realizes It Needs To Greatly Expand Its Drone Fleet, Not Reduce It

user posted image

QUOTE
As reported in the Los Angeles Times, on Thursday, the Air Force has a $3 billion dollar proposal that aims to add 75 MQ-9 Reaper drones to the current fleet of 175 Reapers and 150 Predators. This will increase the number of drone squadrons from eight to 17.
QUOTE
To support this expansion, the Air Force will add around 2,500 to 3,500 new pilots and support staff to its current force. This is also needed to ease the pressure on the current drone force crew cadre, which has been chronically undermanned and neglected for years. Also, new bases overseas will be established to host the Air Force’s enhanced drone force.
QUOTE
When it comes to striking targets of opportunity, where an F-16 needs to refuel almost every hour over the battle-zone, a Reaper can stay on target for dozens of hours without needing tanker support. This capability is also especially helpful for armed over-watch missions. When it comes to surveillance, drones can persist over an area of interest, doing all kinds of surveillance, some of it very exotic in nature, much longer than manned assets, all at much lower cost. The fact that no crew is onboard means that drones can penetrate deep into hostile territory without risking a crew or needing complex combat search and rescue forces on standby.

Terror Groups Get Rich, Adapt to Measures Blocking Cash Flow

user posted image

QUOTE
The first trend is a shift away from foreign donations toward other sources of support. Unlike core Al Qaeda, the new wave of jihadi groups seek to conquer and hold territory. They self-finance by extracting rents from the lands and people they control, a trend of which ISIS is only the most prominent example. But the millions of dollars in monthly revenue from oil and gas are just part of the story.
QUOTE
ISIS also raises millions by taxing or extorting the local population and trading in illicit goods like antiquities. Groups like Boko Haram in Nigeria or Al Shabaab in Somalia have adopted similar self-funding strategies — the latter lines its pockets with as much as a third of Somalia’s $250 million annual trade in charcoal.
QUOTE
Iran, the largest state sponsor in the region, has been providing groups like Hezbollah with hundreds of millions of dollars for years. Many of the pre-9/11 counterterror finance tools were developed to combat state sponsorship. Sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program played a critical role in getting Tehran to the negotiating table. But sanctions have been less effective in disrupting its support for terrorism. This is due in part to Tehran’s ability to move cash to its proxies in bulk through Syria and Lebanon. And there are concerns that some of Iran’s financial windfall from the nuclear deal will find its way to these same groups.
QUOTE
Groups like ISIS or Boko Haram in Nigeria maintain a much larger physical and human footprint than core Al Qaeda. They use ratlines to move supplies and material. They rely on networks to generate revenue through trade in illicit goods and to transit foreign fighters and other recruits.
QUOTE
Such a strategy would recognize that “sanctions from the sky” are now part and parcel of the terror finance playbook, and work to synchronize designations with kinetic action, law enforcement and border control to better target the terrorist bottom line. The key will be integrating the interagency toolkit at the operational level, much as was done by the Iraq and Afghanistan Threat Finance Cells.

T-90SM tests commence

QUOTE
Russian MOD is putting the T-90SM through its paces in order to evaluate Uralvagonzavod’s proposal to upgrade existing T-90 MBT fleet to the T-90SM standard which incorporates many of the technologies developed for the T-14, including the 2A82 125mm cannon. While an inferior to the T-14, the T-90SM is better than the T-72B3 upgrade and comparable to even the best NATO MBTs currently in service. Moreover, and of crucial importance in the era of low oil revenues, it can be in service more quickly and cheaply than the T-14, since the Russian military already has over 400 T-90s in its inventory.

A government source told the Daily Telegraph on Friday that the UK is “moving in the direction” of launching military action in war torn Libya, where IS has emerged out of a civil war that has paralysed the country since a revolution in 2011 overthrew long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Saudi-Led Coalition's F-16 Fighter Jet Crashes in Yemen

user posted image

QUOTE
The incident happened in Lahij Province early Saturday as the aircraft was trying to land at the al-Anad airbase, Arabic-language al-Ahd news website reported.

The Yemeni defense ministry confirmed the report, and said that the aircraft was completely destroyed after one of the missiles it was carrying exploded.

The Saudi air force has no F-16 fighters, but the UAE - one of its allies in the coalition against Yemen - has been supplied with dozens of the US-made aircraft.

The Yemeni army has shot down several fighter jets of the Saudi-led coalition forces in different Yemeni provinces, including Saa'da, Ma'rib, Jizan, Dhamar and Sana'a, in the past 9 months.

Syrian Army Quietly Approaches the Daraa-Jordan Border-Crossing

user posted image

For the last two months, the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Armored Division (specifically, the 15th Brigade and the 82nd Battalion) and the National Defense Forces (NDF) have quietly been advancing inside the provincial capital of the Dara’a Governorate, capturing several building blocks every week from the Free Syrian Army’s “Southern Front Brigades” and Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group).

With this structured advance taking place inside the provincial capital of the Dara’a Governorate, the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Armored Division and the National Defense Forces of Dara’a City are currently en route to the Dara’a-Jordan border-crossing that has been under the control of opposition since 2013.

Surprisingly underreported by both sides, the Syrian Arab Army’s 5th Division is now within a few hundred meters of the Jordanian border-crossing in southwest Dara’a; if captured, the Syrian Armed Forces will have effectively cutoff the Islamist rebels main supply route from the Jordanian cities of ‘Irbid and Mafraq.

Earlier this week, the Islamist rebels from the Free Syrian Army attempted to capture the imperative town of Judaydah in northwestern Dara’a; however, this attempt to alleviate the pressure on Dara’a City failed, as the attack was repelled after the Southern Front Brigades sustained heavy casualties and the destruction of their heavy armory.

It is only a matter of time before the Syrian Armed Forces capture the Dara’a-Jordan border-crossing; furthermore, this raises the question about their future presence inside the provincial capital’s southern sector.

RUSSIA TO SUPPORT KURDS WITH MONEY AND EQUIPMENT

user posted image

It’s widely known that Turkey supports a diverse range of the extremist movements in Russia and in Central Asia. Especially roughly, that strategy was used during both Chechen wars when servicemen of the Turkish special services coordinated and supported the terrorists in the Russian North Caucasus.

After the Su-24 incident in Syria, Turkey intensified contacts with extremists in Russia and its neighbouring states.

SouthFront: Analysis & Intelligence has information that, in turn, Russia has started to support the Kurdish national movement in Turkey.

The situation in Turkey remains critical. Political and national dissidents amid the deep economical crisis tear the country apart. Moreover, Ankara’s actions against the Kurds which are 30% of the Turkish population have already escalated the situation to an open military conflict inside the country.

If the tendency remains, the partition of Turkey could become possible in the nearest future. The Russian support of the Kurdish movements in Turkey and the Kurdish enclaves in Syria and Iraq which border with Turkey are a strong argument for this possibility.

This company is bringing military-style drone tech to the rest of us

user posted image

QUOTE
UAVIA has partnered with Ubuntu for the technology behind its product. Its drones run the Ubuntu Core operating system, designed for embedded devices.

The company started up two and half years ago with €16,000 ($17,500) of its own money, and has bolstered that with interest-free innovation loans backed by the French government. It is now raising a €500,000 private investment round which it hopes to close in the first quarter of 2016.

“SKAT” ON THE WAY: RUSSIA’S ARMED FORCES TO RECIEVE STRIKE DRONES IN 2016

user posted image

QUOTE
In January, 2015, Deputy Minister of Defense Yury Borisov announced that in Russia a heavy drone capable of conducting reconnaissance and destroying targets had been created. The tactical and technical characteristics of the device are to be kept secret. According to the mass media, the Sukhoi Developmental Design Office (Moscow), Sokol Developmental Design Office (Kazan), and CJSC Tranzas Aviatsiya (St. Petersburg) are working on the heavy drone project.

In early October, 2011, in a competition run by the Ministry of Defense to create drones up to 1 ton in weight, the Ambler design won, and in the one up to 5 tons, the Altius-M design won. Offensive operations drones up to 20 tons are being developed by the Sukhoi Developmental Design Office, on the basis of the Skat project with which Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG has been engaged since 2005. The new project received the name Okhotnik [Hunter].

According to unconfirmed data, the Okhotnik will at the same time be a sixth generation fighter. Its first flight is expected in 2018, and its introduction into operations in 2020. Like the Skat, the new drone will have the shape of a flying wing (a so-called “flying saucer”).

China Flight Tests Multi-Warhead Missile

user posted image

QUOTE
The test of the new DF-41 intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, took place Dec. 4.

The latest flight test demonstrated the use of two multiple independently-targetable reentry vehicles. The missile launch and dummy warheads were tracked by satellites to an impact range in western China.

It was the second flight test this year of the new missile and the fifth since 2012. U.S. intelligence assessments suggest that the missile will be capable of carrying between three and 10 warheads. The two most recent missile flight tests took place Aug. 6, also with two dummy warheads, and on Dec. 13, 2014.

Cmdr. Bill Urban, a Pentagon spokesman, declined to comment on the latest test. “We do not comment on specific PRC weapons tests, but we do monitor Chinese military modernization carefully,” Urban said.

The DF-41 is a road-mobile ICBM with a range of up to 7,456 miles. It is viewed by the Pentagon as China’s most significant new missile that has been in development since the early 2000s.

ISIS Weapons Came From China, Russia, US, EU

This new report indicates that it sources its weaponry and ammunition from more than 25 different countries, including Iraqi military stocks that were supplied to the Iraqi army by the United States.
