I think the timing belt also rotate the water pump like many car. It is engine belt driven. Water pump that is electrically operated probably in race car only since they need all the engine power to rotate tires  laugh.gif

Normally water pump is changed when there is coolant or water leakage sign through the pump  wink.gif

Hello everyone,

As my viva mileage already reaching 170km, i will need to change my timing belt soon. Perhaps before it reach 180km.
So i did a survey on the price including labour to change the timing belt.

First shop quote me rm160 + rm80 (labour). He said it is original produa belt.

Second shop quote me rm250 + rm100 (labour). He said it is original perodua belt.

Third shop quote me rm350 in total. He said original perodua belt. He said expensive because all change like bearing.

Why the price variance is too big?

What is the normal price for standard original viva timing belt?

And normally when we change timing belt, it comes together with bearing all is it?

Thanks.

If your car still under warranty then better go to perodua service center. Later u kena tipu by bengkel biasa then baru menyesal. Kalau dah habis warranty is different story.

As darkdelivery mention, change those items. When your coolant leaks out unexpectedly two things can happen, either you realize the engine character starts to change or you dont realize and you end up overheating the engine. An overheated engine could result in a very expensive repair if you end up blowing a headgasket and or wraping the engine head. that would set u back lot more $$$. If ur car is 8 yrs old and havent change the water pump and radiator hoses i suggest you do it and flush the cooling system too. Prevention is better then cure. All the best..

spoke to perodua sc ,

they quoted rm140+ for the timing belt, and around RM50 for alternator + power stereng + aircond belt, labour charge rm120
in total around rm300++ but not exceeding rm350
fair enough, at least peace of mind because confirm it is original

so i guess i will go to perodua sc for this.

Best is buy the part from workshop and take to mechanic. If you are in Klang Valley I can recommend good mechanics and part shops.

Viva has a tough engine and you only need to service those 'sacrificial' items (bearings, belts, mounting etc).

Water pump no need to change. My Kelisa of 15 years still haven't change water pump. It uses a steel impeller directly driven by the belt so it's very unlikely to fail. Some other manufacturers use plastic impellers so ppl sometimes recommend you change it. Daihatsu doesn't have this issue.

As long as you keep an eye on the car, most hoses only need to change if leaking.

8 years is a good time to change mounting (engine and gearbox) but bear in mind both parts and labour is expensive. Changing them will reduce vibration and improve handling and engine response. In the long-term it also reduces stress to your subframe.

Never change mounting at all. But no vibrations feels so far.
Actually how long the original mounting can stand before it requires to change?

For spare part I usually go to Bay Brothers in PJ., near Hilton. They are quite big and supply to many foreman. Then if you go to the back of the shop there is a row of mechanics who only do labour, so you definitely save there. They look kinda unprofessional but they have been servicing taxis and other high mileage vehicles for ages already. For this reason they are quite reasonably priced and very efficient. Have sent newer cars there for complex jobs with no issues.
Been going there for close to 20 years with no complaints so far.
