even they open, u still have to hike another 1.5hrs minimum...
and since the road is icing, u might need to spent up to 2.5hrs

on the top of the mountains, i saw a hiker bring their own bunsen burner & coffee
seeing them drink the coffee, this is really first class enjoyment drool.gif

and try the town super spicy ramen after the hike, u will appreciate it

Joining you July 2017 Hokkaido. How's your planning? Mind to share  blush.gif

D1 - Noboribetsu
D2 - Toya
D3 + D4 - Furano
D5 - Otaru (daytrip from Sapporo)
D6 + D7 - Sapporo
D8 - Return

Is Furano needs 2 days? Target is to see Lavender and walk around... Appreciate some tips to continue survey  whistling.gif
*
--
feel like onsen trip thumbsup.gif
but the furano route is abit odds, waste lot of time
and u dont hv jozankei

--
(alternative)
for scenic summer vacation, (summer fruit, sunflower, lavender, zoo)
you might wan to make a loop at central hokkaido
furano -> biei -> asahikawa -> hokuryu -> sapporo -> otaru
mayb u can squeeze jozankei (1/2day?) for some onsen

---
QUOTE(yaniee @ Jun 21 2016, 04:46 PM)
wahhh why everything need to hike ah? so leceh wor...
btw yes we rent car there except for the last 2 days at sapporo wanna use public transport.
*
with car, everything is very convenient

after 4pm the sky will like 7pm here... 4:30=>8pm
@nite, road also no street light... only cat eyes
raining and fog is also very scary

but the most scaring thing is icing road,
with or without experience it will be very dangerous

take care

Our plan. I have question for a trip to Kawaguchiko. Should I leave my backpack at any station and just bring my day-pack? Since it's only for 1 night stay.
*
i suggest u better sleepover @haneda airport
http://www.sleepinginairports.net/asia/tokyo_haneda.htm
there hv restaurant/charging area/free wifi
u dont wan to lepak at outdoor/cold place, and the trouble with police for loitering
disclaimer: never sleepover at haneda b4

also next morning @haneda, u can buy the metro pass/data sims/pocket wifi etc

Those izakaya under JR railway are open 24 hours, if I'm not mistaken. That's why we plan to lepak there. But if we are not able to get the pocket wifi before 12AM, then we might stay at the airport
Oh..thanks for the suggestion. That option was totally not crossing my mind at all.
*
u know that place is not halal rite? innocent.gif

i been there, highly recommended... for food or strolling... either one of them is goooding
the walkway is very narrow, not for u to loitering,
in the nite itself... it is really cold
go check some of the youtube video sweat.gif

anyway i aldy voice my opinions, u decide yourself

how's the track condition from 7th station of mt kurodake?
n did you took the hiking trail from 5th station to 7th station?
basically i just want to know the track conditions and the view along the way.
*
no comment on 5th trails coz i start my journey at 7th station (after the chair lift)
jfyi 5th station trail is a valid trails... u can check it here
==> http://www.furanotourism.com/HokkaidoPowde...ke_brochure.pdf

when i go the time, the mount is snowing on the day before
mean the ice started to form at 5th station, by 7th station the whole area is covered by snow (beautiful)
to tell u the truth... it is not a easy hike (icing road!!!~)
lucky the trail is well managed... they have wooden step on almost every corner (like in kk)
estimate a short hike ~1.5hrs -> 3hrs (depends on your WALKING speed and CAMERA time)

i hv mention many time, i go there for the autumn foliage
i didnt even know we are allowed to hike to the peak
glad that i decided to hike it despite im wearing my jogging shoe
on my way up i can see the opposite mountain/forest full of yellow+red leaf
the weather is nice and clear, the sky is blue...
i also saw few pieces of ice sculpture, snowman, snowduck, snow etc etc (haha child stuff)

that is not the end... the best of the best view is on the top of the mountain... stupendous wub.gif

I saw someone recommended Jozankei onsen to you...honestly, for me, it was boring...nothing much to see there except going for the onsens. The bus journey for one way was about 1hour++. If you're not into onsen, maybe can skip this. Head to the nearest ski resort if you wanna see snow i.e. Kiroro Snow Resort. If you really want an onsen experience, then Noboribetsu would be a better alternative wink.gif

Because winter driving I mostly drive around 40 - 50 km/h only.
Biei > Furano 35km will took almost 40 minute already.  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

Hi everyone. We're planning to go to Hokkaido next month. 4 adults and 3 children. I was thinking of renting a MPV but seems the rental is quite expensive.

Which local car rental provider is the cheapest or is it better to take train/public transportation? I've just started to do some research but would appreciate if anyone has any suggestion for a group as big as ours. First time bringing parents for international travel happy.gif

Thank you.
*
u hv big family, it is actually cheaper when u evenly divide the cost
and hokkaido itself is actually more convenient with own transportation, except all those big town

my opinion, the elderly also hv more time to rest... less walking/waiting

there are many website... u just compare the price
http://www2.tocoo.jp/en
http://www.toyotarentacar.net/english/
http://nissan-rentacar.com/english/shop/hokkaido/

ps: non-peak season, no need book... many car rental hv counter at airport

U r welcome, just my opinion for your plan

Day 1 - Arrive in Chitose / Furano / Biei / Overnight in Asahikawa
Day 2 - Noboribetsu / Lake Toya.  I will suggest you all to revisit Biei/Furano at the morning again until you all really satisfy.  I have been visited Biei/Furano twice (each visit I stayed three nights here)......so many attraction.  The best time to visit blue pond is with the strong sunlight which will give your photo "wow" effect. So u may reach Noboribetsu late evening or nigh time.
Day 3 - Hakodate........Enjoy your day time and Noboribetsu, visit Lake Toya, Lake Onuma, overnight at Hakodate
Day 4 - Enjoy day trip at Hakodate, stay at Hakodate
Day 5 - Shakotan Peninsular / Otaru There is a fruit orchard near Otaru, u can go there after visit Shakotan
Day 6 - Jozankei Dam / Overnight Sapporo
Day 7 - Sapporo City / Overnight in Chitose
Day 8 Fly Back ..
*
too rush ranting.gif
all the place is totally out of order... bangwall.gif bangwall.gif
waste traveling time
dont think u able to reach hakodate
u think hokkaido is very small? bangwall.gif
at the end u only hv 8days... u sure u have enuf time??

...unless this is your plan for full day driving trips (minus enjoying the trip) sweat.gif
stamping all the way
---

after asahikawa, u should head to sapporo -> otaru -> jozankei -> ?? hakodate -> lake toya
noboribetsu is just below chitose, u better make it on last day

pls use google maps to plan your itinerary, at least u should learn the traveling time whistling.gif

I bought my tickets not too long ago. Consider kinda last minute ... and while doing more research and booking, realized its Peak Summer.

One challenge in accommodations is that Japanese hotels seems kinda strict on accommodating children or at least from what i read, squeezing more than 2 people in one room. We have 2 young children and 1 infant.  doh.gif  booking is a headache.

Are Japanese hotels really strict about having more than 2-3 people in one room?
*
u can try japanese style room, tatami type (-->sleep on the floor)
normally hotel allow you to add futon

did that... thumbsup.gif
