Horrible horrible horrible.... Carrefour at Wangsa Maju is so horrible....

The latest update on the "pet's corner"

The hedgehog is so tiny, it looks like not even weaned yet. There was no food or water in the tiny tank. It looked tired and sickly, kept searching the tank for food.

The baby rabbits died and I saw their dead bodies in the cages.....
The water snakes died and still on display... ugly!
The bronze back snakes dehydrated, and still on display yesterday.... evil evil....

If you guys go to any Carrefour, do check it and see if the condition is this bad or not.... let us try and raise concern about it, maybe get newspaper to do article...

Anyway, the clueless assistant doesn't know anything. I said the rabbit is dead and she just smiled at me. Dumb.....

Keep male and female together, related or not, sure will breed. Unless you keep in separate containers for the rest of their lives.

QUOTE(yrh0413 @ Aug 26 2007, 11:06 PM)
sad.gif sigh... i guess her time has come. Thanks for accompanying me for the past 2 years, my beloved Igel.
*
Igel.... will sure miss her, since I like her pictures. Do update us about her later.

QUOTE(hao @ Aug 27 2007, 03:14 AM)
Frankly, it's not that rare as you think. As more and more people start to keep hedgies and breed once the hedgies are mature enough, without knowing if the hedgies they breed are free from the recessive genes that carry the WHS. By the time the breeders realise something is wrong with their hedgies, it's too late. WHS takes time to develop and before it's noticed in the hedgies, a lot of hoglets that might carry the genes have been sold, and the chain goes on.

Normally, responsible breeders from overseas breed their hedgies for a few generations before selling the hoglets to good home to ensure that all the hoglets are in the best conditions.

btw yrh, forgot to tell you just now, IF the worst case scenario happens, you'll need a water bottle for Igel to drink and handfeed her with soaked kibbles as all her four legs will be paralyzed and it will be very difficult to eat and drink from the bowls. Hope it won't turn out to be like that sad.gif
*
It is not rare in Malaysia I guess.... so many people breed without knowing the background of the hedgehogs. I agree with Hao, this disease takes time and we won't ever know if our hedgies will get this or not till they mature. If our hedgehogs does have this disease one day, all we can do is make its remaining life as comfortable as possible....

QUOTE(almighty @ Aug 27 2007, 07:54 AM)
around 7~8 cm

Added on August 27, 2007, 8:18 amguys, i got a question..hedgehog quill can cut shorteR?
*
Why in the world do you wanna cut the quills? That is so strange.

Young hedgies will have very sharp fine quills.... this is better protection when in the wild. As the grow older, you will notice the quills dropping..... quilling season will take place. All the baby quills will drop and adult quills will form.

QUOTE(almighty @ Aug 27 2007, 09:00 PM)
but the things is i saw mites around his face, near nose there.. how i going to do it?? bath him using brush rite?

yup, i bought 2 packet or Chipsi Classic and 1 Delikate ...thanks for the info hao!! notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif
*
The frontline is strong enough to kill all mites. The chemical will travel a bit to the face coz the chemical is absorbed and spread through the skin. Almost all hedgehogs have mites.... petshop ones or commercial breeders will surely have mites. When doing the mite treatment, do not use wood shavings... You can use tooth brush for hoglets.... for adults, I use a dish brush I bought from Ikea.... very easy and effective hhahaa.

u guys use any other bedding?

i saw a new brand at my local shop the design almost ta same as chipsi call pet's dream.

btw living world bedding can be use for hedgie?
*
Pets Dream is dusty. Don't use Living World... bad for their health.

You can use Breeder's Celect or Careline Wood pellet cat litter.... no corn cob coz it can stick to the genital area.

*
Mostly the 1st and 2nd night can be stressful.... instead of catfood, try and tempt it with mealworms.

QUOTE(hungheykwun @ Sep 6 2007, 05:01 PM)
try the vet @ tmn megah
what u can do....wet the cat pellets (i assume yr feeding  him that) before giving to your hog
*
Coconut at Malacca.... so I guess it would be a problem if got no way to come down to PJ....

I think RC babycat would help coz it is tastier and easier to digest.

Hedgehogs can take fruits. In the wild, they eat berries and young shoots when insects are low.

In captivity, they would rather eat the catfood that is supplied. Not many would take fruits. Out of my 3 hedgehogs, only 1 would lick fruit puree that I make for my sugar gliders.

No lah... none of us use cage. We either use Storage boxes or Glass aquariums. Healthier for our hedgies. Most of us don't cover the lid, We either make a wire mesh cover or don't cover at all but must make sure no wild cats or rats come lah.

Dry corn or Corn cob is dangerous. It can get stuck on the genital, making them hard to pee, can cause urinary problems.

O.o ..... so dangerous 1, wood bedding ok for that? Or still got other option. Wasai Dry corn so expensive also so dangerous.

Oh yea about the DIY pvs storage cage, is it hot without air-con or afternoon hot day? I have a bad experience that put in turtle plastic cage, my hedgehog feel hot on that time.
*
Delikate or Chipsi wood shavings is fine. Don't use others.

If you put the plastic tank indoors, it won't heat up.

Hedgehogs are always solitary..... I keep 3 but all also in separate containers loh. Never put them together for you will never know what would happen.

Hedgies are loners by nature. They prefer to not be disturbed mostly hahaha.... can handle and play with them but never for long coz they do not really like to be held and cuddled like kittens lah.

I have come up with a catfood list that is safe for hedgehogs:

Innova cat food Senior or Adult
Royal Canin Fit32 for adults, for hoglets, use Kitten or Babycat
EaglePack Catfood
Evolve Catfood (holistic)
Go Natural Catfood (holistic)
Orijen Catfood (holistic)
California Natural Herring and Potato catfood (holistic)
Premium Edge Adult Catfood
Purina ONE Natural Blends Chicken & Oat Meal Formula
Felidae Catfood (holistic)

I have listed in no particular order. But do take note about this:

Some of the food above have by-products and corn gluten as fillers. You can still feed it to your hedgehogs but you want keep the food fragments such as corn gluten, wheat gluten, etc. to a minimum. Tainted wheat gluten is the cause of all the pet food recalls right now. Poultry by-product meal is everything but the meat from the chicken.... organs, feet, bones, beaks, blood, etc. The "meal" means it has been ground up and cooked draining off the grease and such. In the wild hedgies eat insect/ animals organs and stuff, but most people believe pet hedgies are better off avoiding "by-products" in commercially prepared foods. Food fragments and by-products are kinda cheap fillers. Minimizing fillers in your hedgies food mix is healthier and will help them live longer.

If you have the money, go for holistic brands.
