As the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 18 times in their history. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup 4 times, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

QUOTE(zenix @ Nov 24 2009, 09:18 PM)
Hope Alien will sticky this info later.
Though written in 2006 so no Roy Keane yet.

Ex-United players that have moved on to become managers.

Written by Simon Stone (MARCH 22, 2006)

STEVE BRUCE (1987-1996): Took his first steps in management with Sheffield United in 1998, then swiftly moved on to Huddersfield, Wigan and Crystal Palace. Left Selhurst Park in acrimonious fashion after Birmingham targeted him as the replacement for Trevor Francis in 1991. Took Blues into the Premier League but after a heavy FA Cup defeat is struggling to keep his job.

MARTIN POWELL (1971-1983): Stylish and well-respected Scotland centre-half whose authoritative nature appeared to make him a natural for the management game. Lasted four months at Burnley.

SIR BOBBY CHARLTON (1956-1973): Arguably the finest English player of all time proved to be an unmitigated disaster as a manager. Claimed he was not given the resources to make a decent job of it at Preston but was never lured back into management following his departure after a single season.

STEVE COPPELL (1975-1983): After a knee injury cut his playing career short at just 28, Coppell turned his attention to management. Steered Crystal Palace into the FA Cup final and then third place in the old First Division - the Eagles' highest ever - the following season. It was the first of four stints in charge at Selhurst Park in a career which has seen him move to Manchester City (for only six games), Brentford and Brighton. Now at Reading and about to steer the Royals into the top flight for the first time.

PADDY CRERAND (1962-1971): A key figure in United's 1968 European Cup triumph, Crerand lasted five months at Northampton before getting the bullet and, like Charlton, never managed again.

MARK HUGHES (1983-86, 1988-95): Hughes was never tipped as a manager by Ferguson but has taken to the game with ease. Took Wales into the Euro 2004 play-offs. Took over at Blackburn shortly afterwards, steering Rovers away from danger in his first season. Currently in contention for a Champions League spot.

BRIAN KIDD (1967-1974): Another European Cup winner who proved to be a poor manager. Got itchy feet in 1998 after spending seven years as Sir Alex Ferguson's highly-rated assistant. Took command at Blackburn but dismissed six months later.

BRYAN ROBSON (1981-94): United's inspirational leader under Ron Atkinson and Ferguson. There are two schools of thought on his stint at Middlesbrough - he either spent lots and achieved little (relegation and two losing finals) or he laid the platform for the Teessiders to become an established Premiership outfit. Kept West Brom up in extraordinary fashion last year but back in trouble again this season.

GORDON STRACHAN (1984-89): Scotland international who won the FA Cup with United and the title of the pre-Premiership era with Leeds. Sacked after five years at when the Sky Blues lost top-flight status, then enjoyed success at Southampton - reaching the 2003 Cup final - before resigning to spend more time with his family. Now at Celtic, has recovered from a humiliating Champions League exit to Artmedia Bratislava, and, after winning his first trophy on Sunday in the CIS Insurance Cup, is set to clinch the Scottish Premier League.

NOBBY STILES (1960-71): Along with Charlton, one of only two Englishmen to have won the World Cup and European Cup, he replaced his former England and United team-mate at Preston, with limited success. After a brief stint in Vancouver, returned to England to take over as manager of West Brom. Sacked after five months, having gained just three wins.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Hazard and Coutinho targeted by Real Madrid and Barcelona

La Liga giants ready to make a transfer window raid on the Premier League and pay huge money for their Chelsea and Liverpool targets.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are planning a transfer window raid on the Premier League.

Spanish and European champions Barca are ready to relieve Liverpool of their playmaker Philippe Coutinho while Real have Chelsea's Eden Hazard firmly in their sights, according to reports in the Sunday Times.

Madrid president Florentino Perez is looking to build a new galactico and Hazard tops his list.

The 24-year-old Belgium attacker is a key man at Stamford Bridge but given Perez has already sanctioned world record fees for Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, Chelsea might be left with little option but to cash in.

And with PSG ready to offer Real Madrid £110m for Ronaldo, Perez could have funds ready very quickly.

Coutinho is under contract at Liverpool until 2020 but Barcelona star Neymar has made it clear he wants his great friend to join him at the Nou Camp and Coutinho is apparently wanted by the hierarchy according the Times report.

^ fun fact on Blind. Whoever feel frustrating for losing Otamendi to City, he's 6. Shaw is 6'1 and Blind is 5'11. Blind is shorter by just a feet(my bad, an inch sweat.gif ). Less muscular, but much more smart.

Oh btw, Youngnaldo Lahm.

A lot of new players struggle/take a long time to settle in a new team, Martial's playing like he's been in the team for years. Unbelievable. During the summer transfer window my friend asked which striker should United sign, I couldn't think of one. Fantastic job scouting system.

If we leave Goodison Park with at least a point,i'll be satisfied..3 points will be even better!

City and Arsenal will be even tough matches, but playing City at home, should give us the advantage.Against Arsenal, away from home..if we can bring home 3 points, that should be great.

I think with Martial in the team, it gives Rooney more freedom to operate just behind Martial and to roam more and not abandon the filosofi when he plays as the furthest forward. At least, from the Sunderland game where both of them play 90 minutes together.

Inb4 Sunderland was very poor.

Martial already married and have a baby.. I think it's a good sign. Settle down early, get their root on Manchester etc. Hopefully he can learn English quicker.

He aerial ability seem not good enough, yet, for his height and strength. He won a lots of air duels but most of times, the headings didn't make it to his teammates. Pointless for ddg /cb to hoof it upfront.

yup can see him not so good on aerial duels. check the stat definitely losing many aerial duels

his pass completion also not very good.. perhaps still adapting wt new teammates

also notice he sometimes like to hold the ball bit too long exposing himself for tackle/fouls. good thing he got very good composure while holding ball though

but at his age.. definitely got the quality to be the next big thing flex.gif

Nah, I'm giving lvg a benefit of the doubts (on his 'stupid' comment)

His comments are always bizarre, due his weak grasp of English. I often emphasize on his direct quote, not just title /elaboration given by reporters.

And probably he just playing down our current league position to cease some pressure and expectaction.

Well it might be the language barrier, but he might also be practical. Think about the team situation:
- Sold 20+ players since he took over
- Signed a whole bunch, but overall can say our squad is still small if we want to compete well on all fronts. We were crying for a CB, and a striker after dumping RVP/Falcao/Chicharito. Now Shaw is out for at least 6 months too.
- Filosofi is demanding for players to learn
- If we ignore Martials form, we don't have any other striker on form.

Other clubs sign change 4-5 players and they still need time to gel and learn each others game. We changed most of our squad (not just starting since the beginning of last season AND have a demanding filosofi to implement as well.

Compare that to City, Chelsea, Arsenal. 3 of them have more settled squads compared to us, and after our disaster season under Moyes and 7th place finish they were way ahead of us in terms of squad condition.

The only reason we are 1st now is because Chelsea and City have been going thru a blip, and looking at our squad and performances we will go thru a similar blip at some point this season.

No need to talk about "we should be 1st place so what is he talking about", it's not about our target (which is always as high as possible!), it's about being practical about the squad situation.

👆🏻 Agree

And oh the matches in October, this is where the real test is. We'll have to wait and see how the squad copes with all those matches + UCL.

Agreed. Especially seeing Smalling and Blind starting every match due to lack of options in defense due to injuries.

We are on the outside looking in, the team is playing well enough and players are learning to play as to how the manager wants them to play. Fans dont know the full story of whats going on within.

Chity, chelsea going through a blip now, doesn't mean that they will win all their games after this. United definitely will lose at some point, but most importantly is that we're not losing now.

No one like the squad situation, even the manager already stated that he wants 2 good players for each position. United will buy when the players of a right caliber and right price is available.

Savor being on top, United needs to focus on 1 game at a time. If we're top or near there after 1st Jan 2016, we'll be there challenging for the title.

BASTIAN TO MENTOR MEMPHIS AND MARTIAL

Bastian Schweinsteiger knows exactly what is required to enjoy a successful career and the German is convinced team-mates Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial have what it takes, admitting the youngsters can “give a lot of power to Manchester United” in the coming years.

With eight Bundesliga titles, the Champions League and World Cup on his CV, as well as another eight major honours, Schweinsteiger is a man whose words carry great weight and the 31-year-old speaks with authority when quizzed specifically on two of Louis van Gaal’s six summer signings.

“Yes, they can achieve a lot,” Basti explains in the matchday programme for Wednesday’s tie with Wolfsburg at Old Trafford. “They are both very young but both very talented. If they make the right decisions and take the right steps in the future, then they can give a lot of power to Manchester United. For me, the most important thing is that they have a good personality and a good character, and they do! That is what’s most important, and with the quality they can achieve a lot.”

Schweinsteiger is the most experienced Champions League player at United with 130 appearances to his name, not to mention the 2013 winners’ medal he earned with former club Bayern Munich. Now, he’s planning to share his knowledge and wisdom to his more inexperienced Reds colleagues.

Last night results will serve us serious warning. English clubs are suck in Europe. But we still in a decent position IF we win. Compact in defense and hopefully our forwards not wasting any good chances. A lots of possession will be good in European ties.

I think Chelsea still in good position but Arsenal seriously in danger to bow out early.

QUOTE
Manager Louis van Gaal confirmed Carrick will miss the game, saying: "[He] shall not play tomorrow."

Regarding Herrara and Valencia, who, like Carrick, sat out Tuesday morning's training session at Carrington, van Gaal said: "They have minor injuries and I don't want to take any risks. We will have to wait and see.

Youngsters Josh Harrop, Donald Love and James Weir were drafted in for Tuesday training because of the injuries.

The good thing Rooney's done was he always tracking back and made some crucial clearances last night. Going forward he was shite..

Martial had a good outing but he clearly not good enough in the air. Hopefully we can cut out hopeful long passes.

Either Mata or Smalling my MOTM. My heart was in my mouth when I saw Smalling landed awkwardly.

Darmian is a decent cover for LB but I rather see Young on the LB and Darmian as RB.

I belive shud we used young as lb and darmian rb after 2nd half sub. We would play better. Many times we have seen young is alive only on left flank not right.... scared me too when small landed. Thought his right knee gone...

What the fcuk happened? After general was subbed all plays like no purpose.

Wolfsburg throw schurlle and the Lord to save their face but LvG dengan tenang masukkan Perreira.

Unless we are leading 4-0 then its a different story la.

Filosofi hinders creativity? Not on that occassion brows.gif

Players getting 'flat' towards the end? I guess that's why filosofi insists on possession possession possession because otherwise they will be chasing the ball and getting 'filosofi-ed' themselves!

laugh.gif... I worry our defence + midfield will pancit this month sweat.gif... We don't have adequate cover and injuries.

LVG stresses on rotation. But when there's a few injuries, we are forced to field almost the same starting XI sweat.gif

midfield imo we have sufficient backup. schwein/carrick rotating. lvg not playing them for 90 mins is good. schnei/herrera and rooney if u say he is a good midfield. some say he is best as striker whistling.gif jones / blind can step up at dm.

defender part reli thin. smalling our only good 1 atm. anything happens to him, its gonna be ddg all over again. mcnair still young. or we might see carrick in cb again... sweat.gif

What the fcuk happened? After general was subbed all plays like no purpose.

Wolfsburg throw schurlle and the Lord to save their face but LvG dengan tenang masukkan Perreira.

Unless we are leading 4-0 then its a different story la.
*
LVG had to decide who to sub between Morgan and Bastien, as both were on yellows. He picked the wrong one and nearly paid the price - Morgan was fortunate he didn't get red for the Draxler "foul", seeing the referee was quite trigger happy whole night.

If Bastien had stayed, we could (or would?) score another goal and kill the game off....

laugh.gif... I worry our defence + midfield will pancit this month sweat.gif... We don't have adequate cover and injuries.

LVG stresses on rotation. But when there's a few injuries, we are forced to field almost the same starting XI sweat.gif

A win is a win though, Arsenal on Sunday whistling.gif....

If Mata, Martial, Bastien and (to a certain extend) Depay can keep their Wolfsberg form against Arsenal this weekend, I fear Arsenal will be ripped to shreads....

It's high time LVG drops Rooney. Last night the most ineffective player who played 90 minutes. Giving the ball away, no awareness, missing chances & not even on penalty duty. Played as no.9 early season ineffective, playing as no.10 also the same. Apa lagi Rooney mau?

I think we were very fortunate last year against Arsenal (away). That team was set to be counter attack and played tightly at the back. SAF often deployed same kind of approach and produced results.

But right now our counter attacking game are poor sad.gif

That's lvg guys. Stubborn and always trying to prove others are wrong. Mind boggling decision.

Rooney is shite but still 90 mins. If other players, kena sub already.
Why din move darmian back to rb and young to lb?
And martial have been playing too many games consecutively. What on earth was lvg thinking when he subbed martial in during the league cup game. We were were running the game comfortably. Ffs, he's only 19. Give him a break.

Fucuk him la. Retire & recite his poetry la. As much as I value his past contributions, it's time to look elsewhere. Kudos to him for equalling Denis Law's goals record but he's no Scholes who got better with age.

We seems to get bad referee each UCL games. Against PSV referee failed to send off the horror tackle which broke both Shaw's legs. Last night a yellow card happy one. Strange though he didn't send off Schneidelin for 2nd bookable offence.

My wish list for next game...

Against Arsenal isn't a good time to drop Rooney. His workrate are essential against that side. Maybe against Everton /CSKA / Boro, in the name of rotation.

The likes of Herrera /Fellaini badly need a game.

While defenders, Depay and Martial need a breather.

Right now, we're winning games even without world class players in the team and as long as United continue to win, something must be right with the team overall, why change that? Come end of the season, it will be time to reassess the team and the worse performers will be cut.

Funny you mentioned morale captain. A captain should have not played that bad. Remember we are not just talking about one game.
Team is winning and he's only played a small role. If you wanna talk about running up and down, all players can do that. I dun see his spirit and passion anymore.
Alternative. Herrera pls. Tell me why is rooney is better than Herrera at the moment.

as long as we win the match, i dun care.

if we lose, then its time to blame looney.

LVG preferred a striker rather than a midfielder on role no 10.
lol pity herrera but i like him though. superb play and link well with juan mata.

Giving Rooney game time to finally get warmed up for the season?

Or preparing Herrera for the latter stage in case current first 11 become fatigued or out of form? Pity really because he is such a good hardworking player at least on the offensive side. Or his mind is still troubled by the ongoing Zaragoza case? Like DDG case where LvG said his mind is not totally focused?

Why I have so many questions today? Why do we exist here on Earth?

but he kenot hide for too long.

Form is temporary, Class is permanent.. Everyone seems to have forgotten how he was before moysie. I don't want to defend him, but he is still captain of United and has been performing for so long, for that i think he deserves until the end of the season.

Once we lose Rooney and other players can't score, you'll feel that he is important.

I hate his goalscoring form right now,but he has a key part to play in the team.

You don't make big changes like changing a captain when the season has gotten underway. The morale of the team will go down. I'm not defending Rooney, i want him axed from the team, but not now as it will definitely affect the team.

He does not have to be the best player in the field. I did not said that. He just need to improve. Lead by example. As a captain, you want to do things right, but at the moment, it doesn't look that way. Again, we are not talking about one game. No fan want their player to perform badly, but LVG is being unfair to Hererra if he persist with Rooney. Herrera was our best player for the second half of the season last season and I do not know why he is being dropped.

You want a player who can spurs others? Bastian is there. He is Germany captain for a reason.

Having said that, I agreed that he should play against Arsenal this weekend. I dunno why but he always did well against them!

If we still haven't chose a permanent captain since last season lol,for me,it has to be Basti or Mike Smalling.

Basti still new here la, he can inspire youngsters but for old heads, give him one season to convince them.

Agreed with mike, but i think next season he'll be the captain if his performances and stature continue to grow. It used to be thought that Jones will be the future captain, but now Smalling seems a better bet. One 25 and one 23, future looks good...

Darmian, Shaw, Jones, Smalling© (mcnair, blackett)

Sad I think Herrera still injured, but Carrick is "fit" to play..

I have a feeling LVG will play with this line up.

DDG

Tony V Mike Blind/Jones Darmian/Young

Mata Schenerdelin Carrick Memphis

Rooney Matrial

Would prefer to rest Rooney, Martial and Memphis but I doubt it doh.gif

Mystery club outbid United for Martial
Manchester United were outbid in their pursuit of deadline-day sensation Anthony Martial, according to the Manchester Evening News. The outlet reports that a "mystery" club were ready to cough up more than the £36 million Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward coughed up to bring the 19-year-old to Old Trafford.

Monaco's vice president Vadim Vasilyev said there was another club willing to pay more than Manchester United, in a deal that would have allowed the Ligue 1 outfit to hold on to Martial for one more season before letting him go. However, Vasilyev said that they knew it was the young star's dream to play for United and that was the final deciding factor in making the deal.

"I will not say how much, but the fixed price, without variables, it was even better," Vasilyev said. "But the boy wanted to go to Manchester, it was his dream. And we let him go with the bonus of €30m. Had it not been for so much money, he'd have stayed."

And offer Runi to Chelsea. Since they sign Falcao, surely they would be interested in Runi as well and ignore his performances. 30m should do it this time. Use that Mane to get Mane.

QUOTE(damnself @ Oct 4 2015, 09:33 AM)

Chelsea badly need striker.

Falcao can't score
Costa want to do wrestling
Remy prone to injury

Rooney is ideal for them.

Record goal scorer for england, and soon united. Give him a chance, more likely rhan not he would finish. Jist don't ask him to pass or run with the ball too much.

i think we should start Martial in the second half. Bring him in when all the defenders legs are tired. First half probably soak up the attack and counter. It's their home and we are better without the ball anyway.

I'm guessing the players simply didn't expect such a quick start when Arsenal's gameplan is usually to keep the ball and walk it in. But really, with Sanchez in hot form and so many quick players in the Gunners team it should be expected that they go fast and hard.

Their gameplan is to pressure whoever that has the ball, and unfortunately for United it's usually the slowest man on the pitch, Carrick.

That has always been the way to beat MU. Pressure Carrick and make him lose the ball. Starting Carrick in this match is the wrong option with all the pacey players Arsenal has.

Where Carrick defenders here?

I always hated this sloth

Anyone play with him will be flops

Goals can be avoided if carrick track the run into the penalty box

Bastian needs to step up and provide some creativity as well, that is why he was bought to relieve the pressure of Carrick. But thus far in his United career he's just like a glorified water carrier, as Cantona would say.

I happen to rate Carrick highly, but only when he's doing the quarterback plays like Scholes and have someone reliable shielding him. Not when Carrick is also doing the defensive work and still expected to dictate long plays from the back. United has never fixed that. With Rooney lack of form up front, all the passing burden is on Carrick on top of his defensive midfield duties.

Only Scholes can perform as carrick partner bcoz he is the greatest ever EPL era MF

The rest suffered due to carrick immobility

Carrick was the one doing the defensive duties while Scholes was free to ping those passes. But now that Carrick has shifted to his role, there's really no one doing his old job in return. Having Schweinsteiger doing the dirty job seems a waste of his talents.

With Rooney's crappy passing and inability to score, I think he's better off doing the defensive work due to his workrate
