Syrian Army Rolls Through Northeastern Latakia as the Islamists Retreat Towards Turkey

user posted image

The Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade of the Republican Guard is rolling through northeastern Latakia, capturing several sites in the last 48 hours from the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra (Syrian Al-Qaeda group), Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham, and the Free Syrian Army’s “Liwaa Suqour Al-Ghaab”.

Much of the Syrian Arab Army’s success in northeastern Latakia is due to the Russian Air Force’s relentless airstrikes along the Turkish border, leaving many Turkish-backed Islamist rebels dead and their military installations destroyed in the process.

On Sunday morning in the Kurdish Mountains (Jabal Al-Akrad) of northeastern Latakia, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade – in coordination with the National Defense Forces (NDF) of Latakia City and Qurdaha; the Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP); and Muqawama Souri (Syrian Resistance) – imposed full control over Tal Ghazalah, the Firlalaq Forests, ‘Atayrat, and the hills surrounding Jabal Al-Qazghadar after a series of violent firefights with the Islamist rebels of Jabhat Al-Nusra and the Free Syrian Army.

Following the capture of the aforementioned sites in Jabal Al-Akrad, the Syrian Arab Army’s 103rd Brigade and their allies advanced to the villages of Al-Musharifa Fawqa, Al-Musharifa Al-Tahta, Raweesat Al-Maslaanah, and Katf Al-‘Alaanah, where they were confronted by a large contingent of Islamist rebels that will attempt to forestall their progress.

In the last 72 hours, the Syrian Armed Forces have seized over 75 square kilometers of territory from the Islamist rebels in Jabal Al-Akrad; this number will likely double in the coming days as the pro-government forces intensify their assault.

Of course, but it's extremely dangerous. Imagine trying to kill something that solely designed to kill you. Get something wrong, and it's essentially a suicide mission for any attack airplane.

well went your dominate air power, just time mater to taken out ...
jet fighter can flight close to your missile/radar base to release missile ( anti-radiation missile) or air-ground missile, even GPS/satelite precision guided glide bomb。 about 100-120km than leave the area, and your missile still not able to attack enemy jet fighter, your only can fire if jet figther close to half missile range. so after detect enemy missile depend how many missile your have to kill in coming missile. usually need fire 2 to counter each missile coming.
If have stealth figther more better, they can coming untill 80-90km release missile.

Very well-planned air defense coverage can nullify even a powerful air force. In 1973 Yom Kippur war Egyptian and Syrian SAM system very effetively limited IDF air force ability to launch attacks. While the IDF still dominated the air-to-air battle due to its superior US-made fighters, but found it very hard to launch ground attacks in the face of Soviet-made SAM and AA gun batteries.

From some sources I read said out of IDF's 103 aircraft lost in battle (not counting accidents and crashes), only about 12 were lost to air-to-air combat while the the rest were lost from SAM and AA fire.

In one dramatic attack the IDF even lost 6 aircraft trying to take out a single Syrian SAM battery.

technology change now huge different compare to 30 year ago. even 10 year ago.
as expert said went dominate air power you dominate all.
your can have good SAM defense, but depend how many stock missile your have, specially cost SAM now ....
anemy even can fire even empty warhead missile to reduce your SAM quantity.
as early intelligent already know estimate sam your have or type.

It's not like air defense tech also stayed still from the 70's. Fighter tech moved hand-in-hand with anti-aircraft tech. It's kinda inevitable. Any advantage each side has will inevitably be countered by the other.

Back then the Phantoms and Skyhawks were state-of-the-art fighters and still they got shot down by the SAMs of their generation. So it's not outside possibility today's latest-generation fighters can still fall victim to the latest-generation SAMs.

yes, technically latest-generation SAM can take down modem aircraft.
but is not easy compare to last time, aircraft much easy to take down SAM from far distance,
SAM just take a beating, deplete war, depend how long can sustain.
compare technology, aircraft have more improvement in technology in aircraft also to air-ground missile, more type and more range
also jamming from aircraft.
if no have choice between defense SAM/ Jet fighter i will choose Jet fighter.

That depend on how effective it is on the layer defense.
For example Russia s-400 will have pantsir as point defense. If they decide it is not enough they could add combat air patrol, aew, signit aircraft and so on.
As for stealth fighter I think it will be hard for them to get close around 100km as they will get higher chances to be detected.
F18G will have tough luck to get close enough to jam those radar.
Defeating those s-400 will be toughest sead mission ever.

I prefer both.
You still need SAM to protect your airbase.
What the use of the runway being blast off.

Whole article by professional telling you why its difficult bro biggrin.gif

Keyword is 'integrated air defence'... no longer you fire 1 HARM = 1 lubang in the radar net, where the only backup is a bunch of MANPADs. Now there are backup radars, interlocking fields of fire, etc and counter-missiles like Iron Dome and land Phalanx...

azrielNice pics. I think we should get Caesar rather than those Paladins, I know its not under armour but how capable is the Paladin of crossing our roads, fields and plantations?

Little Bird Contract Signed

Marhalim Abas
December 7, 2015
1Malaysia

SHAH ALAM: IN my post “When November Comes” I wrote that the contract for the MD Helicopters MD-530G aka Little Bird will be signed during the ASEM summit with US president Barack Obama in attendance. Actually, the contract signing for the light scout attack helicopter did took place during that week alas without the presence of the POTUS.

Despite the best efforts they could not slot the contract signing during the busy ASEM weekend. Both sides had wanted Obama to witness the signing as this was to be the most significant arms deal between the US and Malaysia, since the Hornet procurement in 1993.

Yes we did bought other stuff from the US in the intervening years like the M4 Carbines but nothing really significant like the Hornets.

Details of the direct commercial deal is expected to be made public at DSA 2016. The number of MD-530G signed was six, I was told and not eight as I had reported.

As mentioned previously, the Little Birds will be deployed in ESSCOM once delivered and fully operational. For the weapons package, its likely the standard suite like the Dillon Aero M134D minigun, HMG and rocket pods and guided rockets will be procured as shown by the picture below.

It is unlikely for the moment that we will be buying the Hellfire ATGM – cleared for the Little Bird – as this will need to be procured through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme. A future buy is still likely though for the rather pricey ordnance.

It is expected that the Little Bird version that was contracted was the same as the example displayed at LIMA 2015 earlier this year. Among others, the MD 530G displayed at LIMA featured the 650 shp Rolls Royce 250-C30 engine, longer main-rotor blades, high-capacity landing gear, the Moog Stores Management System (SMS), Harris Corporation’s RF-7850A-UA tactical radio and the Thales’ Scorpion helmet-mounted cueing system.

Iraq Could Ask Russia for Help After 'Invasion' by Turkish Forces

On Saturday, Baghdad described the move as "a serious violation of Iraqi sovereignty," since it had not been authorized by Iraqi authorities.

"We may soon ask Russia for direct military intervention in Iraq in response to the Turkish invasion and the violation of Iraqi sovereignty," Iraqi lawmaker al-Zamili said.

Is Kim a Dull-un? North Korean army officers look a little bored by their glorious leader's latest speech

user posted image

QUOTE
Photographs released by North Korea’s state-run news agency show that Kim Jong-un’s oratory leaves a lot to be desired.

Almost everyone in the room seems to be quietly nodding off, during a speech he made to officers from the Korean People’s Army.

While a few are diligently taking notes on their leader’s wise words, others have taken the opportunity to catch up on some shut-eye. Some even seem to be trying to disguise their bowing heads as a sign of concentration, rather than reveal that they are sleeping.

The pictures were released by North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), of the North Korean leader delivering a speech at the 4th Conference of Korean People’s Army (KPA) Artillery Personnel.

Damascus slams air raid by US-led coalition against Syrian Army — media

user posted image

BEIRUT, December 7. /TASS/. The Syrian authorities have slammed as an "act of aggression" the US-led coalition’s air strike against government troops in Deiz ez-Zor province in the east of the country, the Syrian news agency SANA said.

According to the Syrian Foreign Ministry, four planes of the US-led coalition launched nine missiles against a Syrian government army camp. Three men were killed and thirteen others injured.

The incident occurred last Sunday.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry demanded the UN Security Council should take urgent measures to prevent such attacks in the future.

Israeli Military Set to Shut F-16 Squadron, Add Another Iron Dome Battery

user posted image

QUOTE
The Israeli air force is set to shutter a squadron of F-16C fighter jets in early 2017, once the first batch of F-35 planes arrive from the United States.

On the flip side, the Israel Defense Forces is planning to add another battery of the Iron Dome system – which intercepts short-range rockets – in the coming years. In addition, it will introduce the Magic Wand system (also known as David’s Sling), which is designed to intercept medium-range rockets.

Other F-16C squadrons may be closed in the future, but according to a senior IDF officer, this will depend on the receipt of additional F-35s.

Essentially they can go where tanks can go. Although it looks bulky, Paladin SPH are far lighter than most MBTs, at around 25 tons (PT-91 weigh in at 45 tons) and have lower ground pressure.

As a rule of thumb tracked vehicles fare better in offroad situations than wheeled ones and make better all-round combat vehicles.
