INTERNATIONAL MILITARY REVIEW – SYRIA-IRAQ BATTLESPACE, NOV.04.2015

The Syrian Arab Arby (SAA) launched a wide-scale offensive inside the strategic city of Daraya, targeting the militants of Ajnad Al-Sham at the Daraya Association Quarter The goal is to recapture the territory lost to the latter during their summer offensive in rural Damascus. The Syrian forces are backed by the National Defense Forces (NDF) and a few operatives from Hezbollah. This offensive will also include the Russian Air Force, who has just recently begun their aerial campaign in rural Damascus two weeks ago.

The city of Daraya has been hot-zone for years, as the sporadic firefights and failed ceasefires have plagued any chance of peace to reign over this area on the outskirts the country’s capital. If the Syrian Armed Forces capture the city of Daraya, they will have built a buffer-zone for their airbase and eliminated the threat posed by Ajnad Al-Sham’s mortar shells and rockets that are fired into Damascus.

It has been over a week since ISIS has blockaded the strategic Khanasser-Ithriya highway. In turn, the SAA and its allies have steadily worked their way along this highway to restore all the sites they lost to the terrorist group. The Syrian forces continued their counter-offensive in the southern countryside of the recently captured “Ahad Mountains”, striking the terrorist group’s defenses at Hill Number 11 along the Khanasser-Ithriya highway.

Following intense firefights, the SAA and the National Defence Forces (NDF) imposed full control over Hill Number 11 and the oil fields and pumping station near the town of ‘Qurbat. Militants withdrew to the southern countryside of east Hama.

With the recent capture of the Ahad Mountains and the oil fields near the town of ‘Qurbat, the Syrian Armed Forces and their allies should be able to reopen the Khanasser-Ithriya Highway by the end of the week, pending no further setbacks. Nonetheless, this forecast is a far away for the government’s expectations. The Syrian officials argued that the highway had to be free from the militants on Tuesday.

Thousands of soldiers from the Syrian army, Hezbollah and popular forces, backed up by Russian air force, launched the final phase of a landmark operation towards a strategic airbase Southeast of Aleppo that has been under siege for two years now. The pro-government forces marched on ISIS positions in the region and advanced to the rural district of Sheikh Ahmad after taking full control of the railway crossing. Early reports argue that the SAA are now deployed in 2 kilomteres away from the airbase. The pro-government forces are preparing to mop up the rest of Sheikh Ahmad to prepare for a massive offensive on ISIS positions along the Aleppo-Raqqa Highway.

If Elected Trump Promises to Dump F-35 Fighter Jet Project

user posted image

This was the first time Trump has given any specific details about his defense policy.

"When they say that this cannot perform as well as the planes we already have, what are [we] doing, and why are we spending so much more money?" — Trump said during the show.

"So when I hear that… I say we have to do something," Trump continued.

Trump was referring to a test report that was leaked last June describing the F-35's poor performance, especially when it came to combat maneuvering capabilities.

Furthermore, last month the Pentagon revealed that the F-35 ejection seat could snap the necks of lighter-weight pilots. That's why until the potentially fatal problem is resolved, the US military announced it would restrict pilots weighing less than 136 pounds from operating the plane.

In addition to technical problems, F-35 fighters are in low demand among US allies. Canada, for example, planned to purchase 65 Lockheed Martin-made F-35s to be the country's next-generation tactical fighter at a cost of $45 billion.

However, the election of Justin Trudeau and his Liberal Party during the past Canadian election might change that. During his election campaign, Trudeau promised to scrap the F-35 deal, stating it was too expensive.

Perhaps then Trump might be right. Why spend more money on something new that can't perform better than the existing product?

General Staff: Coordinates of 24 terrorist targets in Syria provided by opposition

user posted image

QUOTE
MOSCOW, November 3. /TASS/. The Russian military have established contacts with leaders of the Syrian opposition and field commanders of a number of armed groups, chief of the Main Department for Operations at the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Gen Andrey Kartapolov said on Tuesday.

The Russian general underscored that Russia had repeatedly said it was ready to "cooperate with all Syrian patriotic forces struggling against terrorists from the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra [both outlawed in Russia - TASS]."

"As part of efforts to create a broad international anti-terrorist coalition in the Middle East, we have established contacts with leaders of the Syrian opposition and field commanders of a number of armed groups," he said.

"Despite their four-year-long confrontation with the government troops, these patriotically-minded forces postpone their political ambitions to the ideas of preserving Syria as a united independent state free from the Islamic State and other terrorist organizations," Kartapolov said. "We hope this step will give a new vector in the settlement of the Syrian conflict."

Kartapolov also said the Syrian opposition provided coordinates of 24 terrorist targets in Syria to the Russian military.

ScanEagle: Quadcopter drone system launches military UAV into the sky and then catches it

user posted image

One of the older military drones still in service has been given an upgrade – it will now come with a quadcopter drone whose job is to launch it into the sky and then come back and pick it up when its mission is done.

This odd-sounding concept is the basis of a new system called Flying Launch and Recovery System (FLARES), which is designed to upgrade the 13-year-old Boeing Insitu ScanEagle, which was built in 2002 and was used for a decade by the US Navy, the US Marine Corps, the Australian Army, the Canadian Army and the Tunisian Army.

The ScanEagle was originally designed to be a commercial unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) used for fish-spotting and collecting weather data but it was eventually co-opted to perform autonomous surveillance on the battlefield for the military, starting with the Iraq War in 2004.

In size, the ScanEagle has a 10.2ft wingspan, is 4.5ft long and weighs 20kg. This means it is considered to be a "small drone" when compared to other military drones, and would in fact be just within the class of the newer consumer drones.

However, the ScanEagle travels much faster at a speed of up to 80 knots (92mph), and it is one of the few mid-range drones that the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) has authorised for commercial use, which makes it attractive to the many businesses now trying to make a name for themselves by developing new use cases for UAVs.

How FLARES works

Although the ScanEagle is much more portable than other military drones, its one major drawback is that it is not able to take-off or land by itself. The traditional way the drone works is by taking off from a catapult launcher, and once it is ready to return to base, a powerful hook has to snag it out of the sky.

Instead, FLARES works by having a large quadcopter drone tow the ScanEagle high up into the air and then release it. The ScanEagle soars off and once it has completed its mission, the quadcopter drone then latches on to it in the air and carries it back home again.

It might sound complicated having to use two UAVs instead of just building a single more powerful drone, but it works because drones that have been built to take-off and land vertically are not really designed to travel over long distances at speed.

A fixed-wing drone is able to handle long distance travel better but then it requires a runway to take off from, so FLARES is a combination of the two different strengths of the drones, while extending the lifetime of the ScanEagle.

U.S.-aided Syrian Forces Complete Successful Anti-ISIL Military Action

user posted image

QUOTE
He said that during one of the operations, on Oct. 31, vetted Syrian opposition groups and Syrian forces trained in Turkey by U.S. forces pressured ISIL fighters on the Turkish-Syrian border.

“These are the very forces that we exfiltrated out of Syria months ago, trained in Turkey and infiltrated back in,” Warren said, noting that the Syrians are from the first two classes that took place over the summer.

“I'm highlighting that because we've heard so much discussion of how this was a failed program and … a program that we've discontinued. But the results of that program are out there on the battlefield right now,” he said.
QUOTE
Supported by coalition air power, Warren said, they were able to take more than 250 square kilometers of territory.

The Syrian Arab Coalition, or SAC, was able to conduct the assault as part of the Syrian Defense Force, he added, “because we supplied the vetted … SAC with [50 tons of] ammunition on Oct. 12. This is important because [Hawl] is predominantly an Arab area and the SAC is the Arab component of the SDF.”

The SDF is a large force made up of Syrian-Arabs, Christians and Kurds, Warren said, calling it a group of groups from various sects, religions and organizations “that have come together under a single purpose, which is to defeat ISIL.”

QUOTE
Being able to position more assets in Incirlik made a difference, he said, “where we were able to bring both A-10s and a Spectre gunship to bear and … it can only be described as devastating …. It killed nearly 80 enemy fighters and wounded many more. And the Syrian-Arab coalition … fought with valor. They showed us something here and we're pleased by that.”

Warren said the actions he described in Syria illustrate how “the whole of this effort can equal more than the sum of its parts.”

He added, “Much as a pack of wolves will hound, pursue or wear down and ultimately kill its prey, local forces in Iraq and Syria are pressuring ISIL from the ground and multiple areas simultaneously while the coalition provides devastating air power all along the way.”

This week ISIL lost ground, Warren said.

Israel orders aircraft carrier as part of US military aid package

user posted image

Israel has provided the United States with a list of weapons that it would like to have available as part of the US aid package, Israel’s Yedioth Ahronoth revealed yesterday.

According to the newspaper the list included a modern aircraft carrier and a squadron of F-15 aircrafts as well as material assistance to support Israel’s anti-ballistic missile system, Arrow 3.

According to the newspaper Israeli officials have asked for these weapons during closed-door meetings with US officials attended by Defence Minister Moshe Ya'alon and US Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter in Washington.

The list of arms exceeded the maximum assistance provided by the United States each year, amounting to nearly $3 billion, therefore it has been referred to US President Barack Obama before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House scheduled for next week, the paper reported.

Jail, cane for having sword

QUOTE
Kota Kinabalu: A Filipino labourer, who brought a sword from Sandakan for self-defence, was on Tuesday sentenced to eight months' jail plus two lashes of the cane.

Magistrate Mohd Faiz Omar, in meting out the sentence to Badboy Lajib, told him that the court was not convinced with his unreasonable excuse for having the weapon in public.

Badboy had earlier admitted to having the 63cm-long sword at 4.25am on Oct 30 at the bus terminal in Inanam, here.

Inspector Jakariya Jupakkal, prosecuting, told the court that Badboy was arrested for behaving suspiciously and that the weapon was found in his bag.

Pleading for leniency, Badboy said he came from Sandakan and that he brought the sword for self-defence and not to kill someone or to steal.

The court ordered Badboy to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving the sentence.

In another case, three locals were fined RM1,800 or four months' jail each for taking drugs.

Jenifer Joyce Jasri, Richard Faris and Imannuel Somin confessed to committing the offence at separate locations here between Aug 28 and Sept 29.

Malaysia scores D on defence anti-corruption

user posted image

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 4): Malaysia scored an overall "D" in Transparency International (TI)'s latest survey of corruption in national defence industries, indicating a high risk of corruption within government defence.

Nevertheless, the score was slightly better than TI's 2013 survey where Malaysia scored a D-.

According to the watchdog's Government Defence Anti-Corruption Index, its second survey since 2013, Malaysia is grouped together with India, the Philippines, Indonesia and Bangladesh in the high risk band.

Transparency International Malaysia (TI-Malaysia) said Malaysia's performance was pulled back by its operations risk, which attained an "E".

Its political risk, financial risk and procurement risks were given a "D", while the country's personnel risk was rated a "C".

In a statement today, TI-Malaysia president Datuk Akhbar Satar said it views the newly-released results with concern, adding that what the country needs now is action to implement concrete steps guided by its recommendations to "protect its defence spending from those who would abuse it for their own personal gain".

"With formal regulations governing the actions of military personnel and independent investigative organisations like the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Malaysia is in a good place to build its anti-corruption framework.

"However, significant vulnerabilities to corruption persist as a result of a weak legislative scrutiny, opaque budgets, weak whistle-blower protections, and insufficient anti-corruption training in institutions," he said.

The Government Defence Anti-Corruption Index 2015 measures the levels of corruption risk in national defence establishments, and scores in bands from A (the best) to F (the worst).

These bands are based on scores on an assessment consisting of 77 questions — for each question, the government was scored from 0 to 4.

The percentage of marks overall determined which band the government was placed in and were scored in five risk areas namely political risk, financial risk, personnel risk, operations risk, and procurement risk.

According to the 2015 survey results New Zealand was the only country placed in the "A" risk band, while Singapore, Australia, Taiwan and Japan are grouped in the "B" risk band.

Meanwhile, to address issues relating to political corruption risk, TI-Malaysia is recommending that the government establish a parliamentary committee task specifically with duties to oversight all aspects on the state defence and security sector.

"This committee should have the power to access a fully detailed defence budget and internal audit reports; be able to call expert witnesses and scrutinise defence agencies and institutions; meet regularly and publish reports on its activity," it said.

It also called on the government to publish an annual defence budget that includes detailed information on expenditure such as research and design, training and other events, and appropriately lengthens the time that budget items can be discussed by the Parliament.

TI-Malaysia also said the defence minister has to address the weaknesses of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) roles and functions to strengthen maritime security in the eastern part of Sabah covering four perspectives namely software, hardware, human resources, and intelligence.

It also urged that the ministry of defence's standard operating procedure for equipment procurement be based on open tenders.

"It is only appropriate to procure and place several radars in various islands in Esscom areas instead of installing one big radar at one area, which is very costly and ineffective to monitor the vast areas to be combed," the watchdog added.

Mindef did conduct open tender but often politician interfere with it.

hmm, on the coastal radar spexer 2000 is more or less a standard coastal radar. Coverage areas around 40km iinm.
so the watchdog should tell the government to purchase more of these radar and set up a complete radar network for esscom.

The 1930's war with 300,000 casualties that no one is talking about

user posted image
A KMT officer (foreground, with pistol) checks out an adjoining street corner while his troops await his orders during the 1930 Central Plains war

In 1930, there was a civil war in china between the main army of the Kuomintang government, led by Chiang Kai-Shek and a coalition of three powerful warlords in the Central Plains region of Henan, China.

The war, known as the Central Plains war was shocking in that within the relatively very short span of the war, from May to November 1930, the two sides fielded nearly 1.3 million soldiers (600,000 Kuomintang and 800,000 warlord faction) and ended the war with about 300,000 casualties on both sides ( approx. 100,000 Kuomintang and 200,000 warlord faction).

During the 1911 revolution, Dr Sun Yat Sen enlisted the help of regional military leaders in his attempt to overthrow the Ming Dynasty. Due to his strong personality, he succeeded in unifying the leaders of the mostly regional military system practiced under the Ming Dynasty and to turn them over to the revolutionary side.

After his death, the various military leaders, resenting that the younger Chiang Kai-Shek was chosen as the leader of Dr Sun's Kuomintang party (KMT) over the more senior members, began to drift away from the KMT central government in Nanjing and started to strengthen their own power base in their respective regions. Over time the regions developed a quasi-independent attitude towards the KMT central government. In reality, vast swathes of China was under the local control of warlords, out of the control and authority of the KMT central government in Nanjing.

Although Chiang Kai-Shek briefly reasserted his authority over the entire country during the 1927 'reunification of China' military campaign, in early 1930 powerful warlords began to fall out with Chiang, who has drawn up plans to reorganize the then mainly regional armies (a remnant of the Ming Dynasty military doctrine) into a federal army under the control of the KMT. The regional military leaders were afraid of losing their authority and traditional power base and openly rebelled against the KMT government.

Hostilities started on mid-May, concentrating on the Henan and Shandong region. The battles waged were large-scale conventional warfare, in contrast to the mainly insurgent and guerrilla warfare of the 1950 Chinese civil war. Both sides fielded huge amounts of forces, totaling over 1.3 million soldiers. After some early successes, the Warlord factions began to fall back under the attacks of the KMT's better armed and trained armies (trained and supplied by Weimar Germany). After hostilities ceased in November 1930, casualties for both sides were estimated to be around 300,000 soldiers.

The war nearly bankrupted the KMT government and effectively broken the KMT military as an effective fighting force. thus it was in no shape to resist the Japanese Army as it started the invasion of Manchuria in 1931 and eventually China. Military historians have commented that the Japanese military probably sensed that the KMT was most likely unable to resist them after the KMT has suffered so many casualties during the Central Plains war and that without the Central Plains war, Japan may have not gone through with the invasion of China, at least during the period of 1930 to 1945.

D&S 2015: First Win wins first exports

04th November 2015 - 10:06 by Gordon Arthur in Bangkok

user posted image

Chaiseri Metal and Rubber Company, the Thai developer and manufacturer of the First Win 4x4 mine resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicle, is accumulating its first overseas sales.

Next year the Philippines will take delivery of a left-hand-drive version of the 11t First Win, with this unit to be dedicated to airport security usage at Clark Airport north of Manila, Chaiseri representative Daniel Ilagan told Shephard.

This left-hand-drive vehicle was exhibited at Defence & Security 2015 in Bangkok, as was a version for the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF). Although manufactured in Thailand by Chaiseri, the latter will wear a Deftech badge, with the Malaysian partner responsible for maintenance and support of the fleet.

DRB-Hicom Defence Technologies (Deftech) is calling the vehicle AV4, and the rebadging appears to be an attempt to deflect adverse public reaction to Malaysia purchasing a vehicle built in neighbouring Thailand. Chaiseri modified the body of the AV4 to give it a 2+1 door configuration instead of the First Win’s usual 4+1 doors.

Malaysian MRAP vehicles have a roof-mounted turret featuring a Gatling gun. The Malaysian chief of defence Gen Zulkifeli Mohammed Zin confirmed last month that the 12t AV4 will deploy to the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) area of operations, a tense area where Filipino insurgents infiltrated in 2013.

While the Malaysian Army has a long-standing requirement to replace elderly Radpanzer Condor 4x4 vehicles, the AV4 will not fulfil this function, Zulkifei revealed.

Although Chaiseri was not permitted to disclose details about the MAF acquisition, Shephard understands that 20 vehicles are being acquired. First deliveries will occur next year, with the last units to be handed over in 2017. Deftech will locally assemble around three quarters of the vehicles.

The First Win family, which includes the slightly smaller First Win E that is being marketed as a reconnaissance or security vehicle, is continually being modified. For example, last year the original semi-leaf spring suspension was replaced with parabolic leaf springs from Germany to give a more comfortable ride and heavier-duty performance.

The armour now offers a higher level of protection too, while a thermal coating reduces heat transfer in hot climates. Seats inside the cab have also been improved with better cushioning.

The addition of a left-hand-drive First Win will bolster the export appeal of the MRAP to regions such as the Middle East, Africa and Eastern Europe that Chaiseri is targeting as potential markets alongside Southeast Asia. Exports will be extremely valuable to the First Win’s success.

Chaiseri views both military and paramilitary/police as potential customers. The Royal Thai Army has ordered 21 vehicles and the Department of Special Investigation (Thailand’s equivalent of the FBI) ordered 18 First Wins for operations in the insurgency-plagued south of Thailand.
