CFP, I'll get the rats from you soon lah heheheh. Had fun with them?
Aiyoh, seems when at the exhibition, Diego slept the whole time, even with so many cats around. Then the children kept asking my friend, "is he dead?" LOL |

Hahah.... maybe loh...... he knows he is the King, he got his own tank with his wifey there..... she gave 12 kids that just opened their eyes yesterday.
Diego is the tamest. He can come when you call him and hold a sunflower seed. If you hold it high, he would stand up on his 2 back legs. He eat the seed in less than 1 second LOL. He is super docile, he groomed my Guinea pig LOL. |

CNY just over.... well, before CNY, one of my male rats was loaned to a advertising company to shoot a tv ad. I've been searching for the TVC high and low. Today found it. Here is the vid of my rat acting hahahah.

HAhah... Tickle and Milo are cute. Rats are easy to find in LYN... I got plenty heheheh.... fancy rats, alot of mink hoodeds.
Anyway, mind sharing with us which shop is it? If you can spend about Rm260, then get a large cage from jtl. I have seen it, the space, ramps, ladders.... PERFECT for RATS! |

You can get those large bird cages.... price starts around RM70 onwards....
Well, keeping pets is not cheap lah.... rats don't really like tanks unless you can make windows if it is a storage box. I cut windows and use wire mesh. Transparent tanks are better. As for nails, you can trim them. I give my pet rats a bath sometimes, then I trim their nails. Now I'm hoping for more Topaz and lilac babies.... Oh yah, I also got hybrids! My hooded beige female went to play around with a wild brown rat. So now I have 3 brown rats. They aren't very tame although I have been handling them since young.... and they are extra smart. Probably coz of their wild blood.... anyway, I hope to introduce this new line to my hoodeds, who knows... maybe I can breed solid colours later LOL. |

Your pictures are blur... but looks like Milo is a male.... the right picture.
You better separate them.... coz rats breed like crazy. Added on March 22, 2008, 2:41 amCharacter doesn't show male or female. Is the body shape. Males are more robust, have a larger head and larger body. Females are more slender. I can't really sex them properly if your pictures are blur. Try getting clearer pictures. Or better, if I can see them if you wanna meet me somewhere. This post has been edited by crazymouse_yyh: Mar 22 2008, 02:41 AM |

QUOTE(@nnie @ Mar 22 2008, 05:00 PM) Serious.. I'm dead man. It would be hard to separate them because they have been spending so much time together and they are like the only companion for each other. Will they get any depression if do so? I once bought Milo back to my mom's house and came back saw Tickle missing Milo so much until she doesn't eat or drink at all. I'm afraid that that will happen to both of them if separate them. Any alternative? Can I bring them to the vet for vasectomy? And how much will it cost? Yes, rats do get depress but only for a short while. But if you keep them alone, you need to spend extra time playing and socializing.Crazymouse: Ya.. better we meet and show them to you. Next week maybe? I'm here in Sunway. Where will be convenient for you? You are welcome to exchange or get more rats from me if you like. Right now I got some lovely mink hoodeds that will leave their mom in a week. Cute buggers. I go to Pet Shack during Thursdays.... that's just behind the Wang Wang aquarium shop you bought your rats from. I was there last week.... the condition of the rats there are kinda sad, such small space. Vasectomy is possible... but it will cost about Rm100.... |

QUOTE(@nnie @ Mar 24 2008, 09:01 PM) Hope to see you hanging out here often and share your experience of having you own rats. Added on March 24, 2008, 9:37 pm No problem transporting them. But take note that they might need some time to get use to their new owner and new living environment. So it's better to leave them be for the first 24 hours after you bring them home. You may feed it with some nuts or better, some cat food (my rats favorite) by hand. Help them get use to you. It might be a little nervous at first, but this varies for each rat. They have their unique personality too. Let them smell you and come to you by their own. Don't try to take it up by force. They are curious in nature so don't worry about they not coming to know you. It's best if you can get a cage for it as soon as you get it home. Not a hamster cage, it might not fit when they are fully grown. Buying a sugar glider cage is the best as it has non wired bottom, so that they don't get bumper feet. You also need a water bottle and a feeding dish. As for bedding, rats don't really need beddings, but to cover up the smell its better if you put some bedding for them. They can also cover themselves when they're cold. The best bedding is aspen or cat litter bedding. It might be cost a little more and kinda hard to look for in Malaysia. But avoid using cedar or pine bedding as it might cause respiratory problems. Aspen bedding or even those paper bedding would do the trick. That's all for basic care. You can experiment yourself what kind of food they like and how they like their bedding to be place. Take it easy. There are very adaptive. I've seen rats grow up to 3 years old living in the worst condition ever. Just show them some love and give you guys some time to bond. Should be alright. Crazymouse: I've got some clearer pictures here. Can you help me identify their sexes? Thx ( left Tickle; right Milo) For your info, sugar glider cages got wire bottom. But it is still the best cage. My rats live in a large 2ft cage. They have a hammock, a wooden plank to rest their feet while the rest is wired. I found this to be the best way to keep them. This is coz I have..... LOL.... 30 rats ok. Rats need lots of ventilation. So a cage is the best. It may be messy with wood shavings, but it really is healthier for rats. My Singaporean friends house my rats using cages as well. Some use the tall 3ft bird cage, some buy Super Pet or those large guinea pig cages with ramps. I use both wood shavings and catlitter. Cat litter is more for my makeshift storage box cages coz they are more comfortable for their feet. Those in the cage get cat litter coz they are separated from the cat litter by the wire mesh. QUOTE(-Nos- @ Mar 25 2008, 09:56 AM) Nopes... chinese hamsters look more like mouse than a rat. Also, the chinese hamster has a tail not longer than 2cm. Mouse and rat got tails that are the lenght of their bodies. So it is totally different. Chinese hamsters got a mousy face.Added on March 25, 2008, 10:13 amFeeder rats and tamed rats.... got difference. Some petshops sell adult feeder rats... so getting them as pets is kinda difficult coz they are quite wild and will bite. Getting feeder rats at a young age is easier, taming is smooth and easy too. Why people charge RM50 for tame rats is coz they train them already to be tame. Will come when you call. LOL, but I don't sell rats at RM50.... My rats, half are feeders and half are pets. I gotta use them as feeders coz I own snakes. But all my favourite rats are my pets. They grow really big, if you guys have seen the CNY vid I posted, you can see how big my rat is hahahah. If you keep in your room, you should use a high quality cat litter. No matter how many times you change the bedding, rat pee is not healthy.... so I would advice you to keep your rats somewhere else other than your room.
Rat poop that is wet would be smelly, when the poop is dry, it is odourless. Of course the urine is strong hahahah. |

Those are fancy mice, not rats. They cost like Rm3 only.... pets... well, they aren't as people friendly like rats.... ok as pets but their body odour and pee smell is stronger than a pet rat.

I think the correct word is bond.... most rodents can be tame but to bond with it is different. Rats will sit on our shoulders, answer to clicks and sounds I make when I am near their cages. Rats are easier to train and easier to be pocket pets coz they rarely pee and poo when we put them on our shoulders or in our pockets.

QUOTE(abang brother @ Mar 31 2008, 06:38 PM) Oh okay. Thanks for that guys. It is normal mice. The proper name is Fancy Mice, but normally sold as sn ke food. Pets Wonderland sells at RM6, Pet Family at Rm4, most petshops sell RM3...Btw, theres a pet shop in Kuching selling a rat or mice name Micky Mouse. What do you think it is? Quite small, like gerbils but not big like gerbils. |

There are no dumbo rats or any other kinda pet rats here coz Malaysians buy rats for feeders. If you want other type of rats, you gotta import from Australia.
