Hi everyone... newbie here.

Last two weeks, went to LFS and bought 2 pairs of guppy. Just wanted to play around with it and put into my empty round bowl... after 2 weeks, one of the female gave birth! I was so thrilled of this. It seems like the first time ever that the fish that I rear gave birth. Soon, it triggered my interest again in rearing fish...

Now, I'm planning to get a proper tank, say 2ft and aim to rear about 20 guppies, for show on my living room. Been doing some reading but really dont have the time to dig much deeper. And so I found this thread, hoping all the sifus here will share some experiences with me... notworthy.gif

Below are the items that I'm thinking to get for my 2ft tank... hope any sifu here can just gimme some guideline and tips...

For tank setup:

1) Tank and cabinet
2) Canister Filter (I thinking to get Fluval 206 or Dophin CF800. Dophin comes with UV. Will this UV helps prevent diseases?)
3) Heater and Thermometer
4) Air pump - necessary?
5) LED Light
6) Anything that I missed?

For Aquascape (Zero idea on this... I wish to get some "lazy" aqua plant)...

1) Aqua Soil - necessary? Or I can just get gravel? No idea at all
2) Aqua powder?
3) Liquid CO2?
4) Plant food?
5) Driftwood and stones (deco)

I read that some aquarium, not sure what is the setup, seems like no need to change water for months or even a year. Is it the UV at work?

These are what I have in mind right now... huh, will be quite an investment there. Hope sifus can comment a bit. Many thanks!

oh wow, so fast you have guppy fry ady... congrats... not easy to find, but there are a few shops in PJ that i know carry them. even the item posted by sniper. about 26 bucks now... let me know if you wanna know where and which shop. if you stay in pj area then can get it easily.
Actually I bought 2 pairs guppy just for fun, rear in glass bowl. After 2 weeks, gave birth already. That sparks my interest to pursue further. Am in the midst of setting up a proper 2 ft tank now. 😁 Do let me know PJ where can get. I found from lelong, Algaefarmer selling RM20 for 100g ready made brine shrimp eggs... That's the closest I get. Also saw the ocean free freeze dried brine shrimp but LFS said too big for fry.

i see! nice, but you didn't reply to my long post re your questions initially, so thought you lost interest.
i think you can try fish depot, they are having anniversary sale, 20% store wide if you are a member and 10% for non-member.
they have the product posted by sniper, but i'm more keen with the other brand, orange packaging, 20g type, i think they now raised the price to about 26 bucks ad, but so far, my fishes love that, so i'll stick with that.

Haha.. sorry, my bad for not replying. Thanks alot for your kind assistance on the matter. Greatly appreciated.

Finally, here is my first attempt on aquascape. So happy to set up my tank after doing research and hunting tank and cabinet for few weeks.

it's alright, don't matter. where do you get that plastic lily pipe? so cute. lol...

congrats on your first aquascaping experience, but a bit of comment, that is, the front part of the soil, must be flatten, from competition standpoint, it must be flat on the front view on the front bit.
*
Haha. That plastic Lily pipe came with the canister filter I bought. Next time ada budget, change to clear glass. 😝

Oh, front supposed flat hah... Didn't know. I tot wanna create some 'waves' pattern to look not so plain. Later rescape the soil 😁

Just a quick one...

Which is better? Lily pipe or Spray bar?

Should inlet and outlet of filter placed in same side or opposite side?

Thoughts?

tehoice, you mentioned that you kept your breeding pair in a plain tank. How about when the female is about to give birth? How do you separate the female? One of my female just gave birth but non of the fries survived. But I figured that the female also gave birth prematurely... saw one of the fry, dead upon out of the female... Now I have another pregnant female, separated from the rest. Yday I scoop the female out and put into another tank but I guess it is not a good way, which might stress the female out. Any tips on improving?

i see, depending on your ultimate motive. just some random guppies? or pure strain guppies, all beautiful same strain guppies in one tank.

*
This statement very poisonous... Haiz... I also dilemma now... so many beautiful strains out there but only got one tank... hahaha... Thinking to get Albino Full Red whole tank... tehoice got stock?

I also got a few cheapo guppies in other small bowls...

wow, never noticed there is such a thread in mac 2.0, though a member there since 2010, hahaha....
anyway, i met the ts there, he's no longer doing guppies, hes focusing on plecos nowadays.
inspiring though. but i'm doing manual water change almost everyday, 2 hours, for 20++ tanks... consider faster than his. haha...
*
Haha. I think I won't have 2 hours to spare everyday for water change... My wife will kill me. Hahaha

Well, it's getting like a jungle soon... need to start trimming. What do you guys do with those excess plants after trimming? Just toss them away?

I have since removed the egeria... cant get them to grow nicely. Now, it's flooded with cabomba. Haha
