Actually that place economy mainly due to the port nearby, one of the bigger port in china
So originally those houses built there mostly occupied by workers at the port or plants near the harbour
Macam chernobyl lo a township built to cater workers around the powerplant

Cheap translation:

According to local media Tianjin had a huge explosion. Some comment that a gas station exploded. More investigation must be made before we conclude the source of explosion.
@愚大象 said, around my house, a few doors has been blown off by the shockwave, everything was so bright and blown into pieces. Three high rise building has power failure. Everyone who is standing outside, can hear the sound of glass shattering.

The users in the internet said it's an oil storage explosion.
the earth quake from the explosion can be felt 10 kilometers away. No casualties has been accounted for so far. Hospitals are currently packed.

I heard that the first batch of fire fighters, 35 trucks of them were all dead. Bcos there is a second explosion, and followed by a third explosion.

The only thing can confirm that is reported by their local news
First, ethanol storage caught fire, the explosion from ethanol tank caused the chemical plant to catch fire, then chain explosion happened. And the railway is destroyed they cant order train to take those hurt people to further hospital, and neary hospital is full and rejecting patients. News order those got car and can help, can go take those people to hospital further out
Oh yeah and tey tell people to wear mask, close windows because poisonous gas might be spreading

FUUUUUU thats one hell of a boom. Those firefighters at the scene, can't imagine.. sad.gif
*
First 12 teams of Firefighter reach at around 1050 pm. That time only catch fire no explosion
And then at 1130 got explosion
1140 they send extra 35 car and 9 team of fire fighter
If timeline like this means the first 12 teams of firefighter got caught pretty close to the chain explosion

So far they report only 2 missing fire fighter at their official page. But you know la the officials like to cover up. Hope really nothing serious

POSTED: 13 Aug 2015 02:33 UPDATED: 13 Aug 2015 04:44

BEIJING: A massive explosion at a warehouse in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin on Wednesday (Aug 12)
sent a fireball ripping through the sky, killing seven poeple and injuring at least 300 others, local media reported.

The blast, which could be felt kilometres away, was triggered when a shipment of explosives detonated in the warehouse
where it was being stored, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

"An explosion ripped through a warehouse storing 'dangerous goods' in north China's Tianjin City late Wednesday night,"
Xinhua said, indicating the blast occurred around 11.30pm (12.30am Singapore time Thursday).

China's CCTV aired footage of plumes of flame raining down on the city, accompanied by a deafening bang.
Chinese state media reported seven people were killed in the blast.

The Beijing News reported that between 300 and 400 injured people had arrived at one hospital, while citing a worker
at another who told the publication there were too many new patients to count.

Local media said the fire caused by the blast was now under control, but that two firefighters called to the scene were missing.

The blast is said to have occurred at a warehouse of Ruihai Logistics, an appointed company of Tianjin Maritime Authority.
Established in 2011, Ruihai Logistics handles the transit and distribution of hazardous goods.

Photos posted on Chinese social network Weibo showed people in the street apparently covered in blood, while others carried
children covered in blankets to safety, though the veracity of the pictures could not immediately be confirmed.

The magnitude of the first explosion was the equivalent of detonating three tonnes of TNT, the China Earthquake Networks Centre
said on its verified Weibo account, while the second was the equivalent of detonating 21 tonnes of the explosive.

China has a dismal industrial safety record as some owners evade regulations to save money and pay off corrupt officials to look the other way.

In July, 15 people were killed and more than a dozen injured when an illegal fireworks warehouse exploded in the northern Hebei province.
And at least 71 were killed in an explosion at a car parts factory in Kunshan, near Shanghai, in August 2014 last year.

Tianjin, which lies about 140 kilometres southeast of Beijing, is one of China's biggest cities,
with a population of nearly 15 million people according to 2013 figures.

A manufacturing centre and major port for northern China, it is closely linked to Beijing, with a high-speed train line
cutting the travel time between them to only 30 minutes.

Like Shanghai, several countries were granted trading 'concessions' there during the 19th and early 20th centuries
- settlements which were administered by the foreign power - starting with Britain and France in 1860.

The city centre retains a legacy of historic colonial architecture, along with more recent skyscrapers.
It is one of only four cities in China - along with Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing - to have the status of a province.

that was huge, the explosion was far behind those flats, and compare with those flats, which can be like 30-50 stories high, the explosion could have as tall as the twin tower, not sure it can beat those 2 nuclear explosion in japan or not.

Lets hope its really an accident, not related to terrorist.

Worse of all, can anyone remember that Malaysia plan to have a nuclear plant ?

Hopefully the plan to have a nuclear plant running is just a joke.

With our country SOP of running such a high risk project, it will be safer not to start such a project.

Even our country airplane runway also not up to standard. esp KLIA2 runway

Comparing google earth to the weather satellite video it definitely looks like it was centered at (or right around) the Taida Service Waibao Industrial Park. Which is right next to the National Supercomputing Center of Tianjin- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Supe...nter_of_Tianjin So this means that the Tianhe-I supercomputer was destroyed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tianhe-I Even though this explosion was centered in an industrial park, there are alot of high rise apartments very near. I will be surprised if the fatalities are not in the 6 digits.

I work for a Logistics company in the US and we have many shipments there right now. The office is upside down right now.
Update: It's not relevant to my company but many ocean carriers actually lost many crew members that were on the ships. They're taking a wayyy worst hit then we do. Condolences to the crew member's families.
Update 2: People usually leaves at 4:30ish, it's 5:20 right now and everyone are still here. People that called off for today are now all here. Doesn't looking like we're leaving soon since it's morning in China and people are waking up.
Update 3: Angry customers (because they didn't buy insurance) are calling in to see whether if there shipments are okay. We have absolutely no way of finding out. Our average wait time increased from 20 seconds to over 40 minutes now.
Update 4: Leaving work now. Tomorrow will probably be my last day. Hello Trucie.
Updated 5: HR sent an email asking everyone to come in tomorrow at their earliest convenience. I'm gonna go in at 5 am tomorrow (we're 9-5) to help deal with the aftermath. There will be more information available tomorrow to help dealing with the customers.
Update 6: Words are that CEO is working on a deal with a bigger logistics company to buy us out. Not sure what the terms are and I think the company that want to step in and help us I may be able to keep my job after all you guys...
Update 7: We're receiving death threats via emails/phone calls and text messages. Some people's whole life saving is in those containers. This is a mess.

The International department is having an emergency meeting as we speak. We called every single agents we have around that area to see what's still in the port. The damage is now estimated to be about 7.2 million dollars in goods as of right now. I'm working on my resume...
Edit: Over 15 millions in damage now and it's not slowing down...
Edit 2: Over 20 millions now. This is very overwhelming. We've never experienced something like this before.

Wonder will this incident effect current economy?
*
For people grappling with how big this is:
There will be a massive loss of life, as there are residential areas not too far from area of the explosion; that is besides a great number of people working at the port facilities.
But the economic implications may loom large as well:
Port of Tianjin is one of the largest ports in the world (top-10, arguably; depending on your metric)
it is massively damaged and won't be operating for quite a while (!); certainly well below capacity for months
cargo currently in port will have to be written off; cargo scheduled to leave the port ... forget about receiving it for a while; other ports in China will be able to deal with some priority cargo (containers, especially), but cannot handle all the cargo that was supposed to be shipped there (Tianjin preferentially handled non-container cargo, it was "only" the 9th largest container port in the world, but the 4th in tonnage)
there will likely be specific product bottlenecks, where other ports wont be able to pick up the slack due to lack of specialized facilities for bulk cargo (apparently coke, coal, oil, grain, fertilizer (!), chemicals, lubricants, ...; not all of these, but some)

Disclaimer: My company's name is not in the pictures.

It's a tragic for sure but its nowhere near nuke.

The second explosion is roughly the force of a MOAB though.

QUOTE
The China Earthquake Networks Center reported that the first explosion had a 2.3 degree magnitude, and the second had a 2.9 degree magnitude.

The magnitude of the first explosion was the equivalent of detonating three tonnes of TNT, the China Earthquake Networks Centre said, while the second was the equivalent of detonating 21 tons of the explosive.

if its explosive shipments by the military, i doubt we will be hearing about it in the news. They will put the blame on something else. Knowing how china gov works, they will surely try their best to wash their hands off this.

insurance don't cover all.

Most importantly, insurance companies also can bangkrap to save their bosses properties from being confiscated to repay the debts and from paying compensations.

After the earthquake in Indon last time, I heard several companies close down because the locals can't read the fine print that they don't cover natural disasters and keep demanding like gangsters for compensation.

one big parent company ABC corp, got anak syarikat DEF logistic services, and also one insurance company GHI Insurance. So buy back inside their group lah.

for local example, AirAsia punya insurance bought with Tune Insurance. Maybank punya buy back from Etiqa. Ambank punya from AmAssurance.

Its because of people like you that cause this fire . Want fast and cheap goods and delivery , so end up they have to work fast to reduce cost and neglect safety precautions.

Singapore knows if they put on main island the whole island can become mushroom soup at least they put on island.

Malaysia ones are close to resident areas, yea it was once far from resident areas but as land becomes expensive housing developers start building house close to industrial area, also convenient for people working there, but, convenience comes at a risk.

If groups or organization wants to cause damage, they can easily infiltrate these facilities (which are lowly guarded compared to say a small Bank?) and set up a detonation, no need fancy warships or fighter jets.

Massive blasts rock Chinese city of Tianjin, killing 17 and injuring over 300

user posted image

By Steven Jiang and Dana Ford, CNN
Updated 0407 GMT (1107 HKT) August 13, 2015

Tianjin, China (CNN)A series of huge explosions shook the northern Chinese city of Tianjin late Wednesday, killing 17 people and injuring more than 300, according to officials and state media.

The cause was not immediately clear.

Liu Yue, a 25-year-old Tianjin resident, said she felt the first blast but didn't think too much of it.

"The second explosion was so powerful that I felt the entire 16-floor-building was shaking," said Liu, who lives about 4 kilometers (2½ miles) from the site of the blasts. "I thought it was an earthquake! I was extremely scared. I was afraid my family was in danger."

The initial explosion erupted at a warehouse for a logistics company in an industrial area of the port city, according to Tianjin police. The company was identified as Tianjin Dongjiang Port Rui Hai International Logistics Co. Ltd.

The state-run news agency Xinhua reported that the explosion tore through a warehouse storing "dangerous and chemical goods" in Binhai, an area of the city by the water.

Video from the scene showed a blinding blast of light and smoke that sent fireballs shooting across the night sky. That was followed by an even bigger explosion, the force of which appeared to knock over the video camera.

The shock waves were felt kilometers away, Xinhua reported, and some residents said windows and fish tanks had been shattered.

The state-run China Earthquake Networks Center said in an official post on social media that two of the explosions had carried the force of small earthquakes. The first was measured at magnitude of 2.3, the second at 2.9, it said.

As day broke Thursday, the extent of the damage was beginning to become clear. State media carried images of damaged buildings and parking lots full of rows of burned-out cars.

The People's Daily and CCTV, China's state-owned broadcaster, reported that 17 people were killed. CCTV and Xinhua said that more than 400 people were injured, while the People's Daily said some 315 were hurt, 32 of them critically.Xinhua had reported earlier that most of the injuries were from stones or broken glass.

The injured were taken to different hospitals in the city, and people gathered outside, waiting for news of loved ones.

Many roads were blocked off around the city, which has a population of more than 13 million.

The firefighting division of the Chinese Public Security Ministry said firefighters were first called to the scene about a fire. An explosion happened after they arrived and it damaged buildings and infrastructure. Four firefighters were injured and two more have lost contact, according to the ministry.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang have called for "all-out efforts" to save the injured and minimize casualties, Xinhua reported. Li also promised a full investigation of the incident.

Steven Jiang reported from Tianjin. Jethro Mullen reported and wrote from Hong Kong, and Dana Ford reported and wrote from Atlanta. CNN's Will Ripley, Shen Lu, Kevin Wang, Elizabeth Joseph and Don Melvin contributed to this report.

So, overall, being in a lead-lined fridge you're somewhere around 51 points (~percent) safer than standing randomly in your home or office. However, you could still get 46 of those points just being in some other well-protected interior room away from any sort of glass or other likely flying debris (removing the fridge escape penalty of course).

As it happens, duck an cover made a lot more sense than we give it credit for today; it's almost as effective as Indiana Jones' brilliant lead-lined fridge idea.

FYI - This is not an exhaustive list of nuclear effects and the actual nuclear attack you're subjected to could change the weighting substantially. Your mileage may vary.

depends on which port and method of transportation they used.
Shenzhen is just an industrial zone.

If your goods are expensive and shipped through air freight, then no issue.
If those goods are common stuff that used the shipping lanes, then high probability of kena kan tiao by this.

explosion happens at 1130pm, so that first batch i think got caught at the middle of explosion already

1030 catch fire, first batch of 12 cars go to rescue, that time no explosion
explosion happens at 1130pm, so that first batch i think got caught at the middle of explosion already

I think the same also. How BOMBA handle if such explosion happens?

44 died including 12 firefighters. China style is always bomba/police comes first and followed by army. They can control things very fast.

their bomba is part of the army or armed police(武警) division, they are called 消防兵 and are governed under much stricter army rules.

yes, theire firefighter is park under armed police group, but management using army style, rule and regulation.
so as "army" have go in first.
is very true, so many firefighter dead in china every year due to this culture.
there firefighter mostly very young and luck experience due to Term service like using Army. each firefighter serve 1 term (2 year) , first year is traning, than serve other 1 year than retire liao, than 30-40% only select go to 2nd term. than must retire, very little will serve 3 term. so a lot lack experience. mostly other country firefighter have 10-20 even hole life experience。

above reason, there /leader/commander/领导 alot give wrong order,or even city leader can override Fire officer order, like going to danger area like factory, shopping mall, oil plant ASAP without analyst than thing Collapse and explosion。 their fire official also need serve term so many also lack experiance.
This is firefighter problem now in china.

Expert: Cyanide may have been present in Tianjin blast

The possibility of there being cyanide at the accident site in Tianjin cannot be ruled out, the China Youth Daily reported on Thursday morning, following the series of huge explosions late Wednesday at a warehouse for dangerous materials in the city.

The newspaper quoted Doctor Wu Chunping's saying that the commodities stored at the explosive warehouse include hazardous chemicals such as sodium cyanide and toluene diisocyanate which can penetrate into human bodies through the skin and cause poisoning.

Dr. Wu suggested preventive measures be taken. People should better wear gas masks so as not to expose their mouths and skin, he said.

Wu explained that a single hazardous chemical explosion can be relatively easily targeted, while the situation in the Tianjin accident on Wednesday is different and more difficult to handle because it involved many varieties of hazardous chemicals.

In addition, a variety of hazardous chemicals will interact after the explosion to form more stable and more complex compounds and produce other toxic substances that fill the air and are difficult to dispel. Therefore, the follow-up work must include physical protection, Dr. Wu said.

Those plants got higher safety design & managed by bigger companies because O&G got higher standard. Equipment are all well maintained & personel are better trained & better paid, coz O&G got big budget and reputation to keep.

But those small chemical plants, storage facilities dunno how their standard & personel training. Don't think it's that high, but problem is usually these plants are near resident areas.

Gutter will reduce the chance of getting hit by flying objects by high percentage, but chance of object falling onto you is still there.

I'm not sure if fire from explosion works like in the movies where fire blast tru above your cover, but from what i know if the gutter doesn't have highly flammable object the gutter might be safe, but the flame can still enter the gutter if the blast is strong. The heat might kill yo though unless the gutter is full of water.

If you hide in the fridge, the fridge probably gonna get blasted into the sky, so you might survive the blast but not the impact, the door will probably flung open and you too.

that is why in Western countries such facilities, including water treatment plant are closely guarded, some have army patrolling & guarding. because these are the easiest & most effective way to sabotage a country. and they have strong counter-intelligence as preemtive measure.

but in developing country, doesn't matter. aeroplane missing also dunno until too late.

that is why in Western countries such facilities, including water treatment plant are closely guarded, some have army patrolling & guarding. because these are the easiest & most effective way to sabotage a country. and they have strong counter-intelligence as preemtive measure.

but in developing country, doesn't matter. aeroplane missing also dunno until too late.

So Western is a synonym for developed now ?

Conspiracy Time

So a day before this, the safety inspectors or something like that went there.

I knew it, I bet it's because they refuse to bribe the inspectors so the inspectors probably think "FUCK IT, WE'LL DESTROY YOU" etc. etc.

Tian jin Blast is equivalent to about 21 tonnes of TNT

truth is many people is injured and killed

covering up the damage makes it seem not as bad as it really is

people need to know that this is a terrible industrial accident

someone has to be responsible for the explosion

Those plants got higher safety design & managed by bigger companies because O&G got higher standard. Equipment are all well maintained & personel are better trained & better paid, coz O&G got big budget and reputation to keep.

But those small chemical plants, storage facilities dunno how their standard & personel training. Don't think it's that high, but problem is usually these plants are near resident areas.

The truth is O & G in Malaysia really have the high standard on HSE.
Even minor accident or near misses need to be reported, especially Shell & Exxon

I'd love to believe just that..

I'd love to go through all the hse act procedures n standards and audit accordingly.

I'd love to have turn around as scheduled every time without delay.

I'd love to quickly repair any faulty as soon as it identified..

I would really love to know that

Youd probrably die, if not from the heatwave, the amount of flying debris which is as hot as volcanic ash would fry you alive or suffocate u, if not die from radiation.

Safezone would be 300km away.
