what is the possible reason that being charged for data roaming but phone MOBILE DATA and DATA ROAMING turned off? only using phone calls, sms and wifi. furthermore, to subscribe to data, we need to dial *123# which is RM38/day.

happens on all malaysia telcos.

happened to my hotlink when i was transiting in hk. mobile data and data roaming were off. my phone scanned and registered at a host carrier. then immediately my credit disappeared!

my iphone's data counter registered 0 byte. i believe during the process of negotiating and registering with a carrier, some data packets were exchanged.

this is easy money for telcos. this is why all malaysian telcos are forcing auto data roaming upon us with no option to turn it off at the operator end. i have sim cards from hk, indonesia and vietnam and data roaming is not turned on by default.

i suggest we all complain to mcmc to have our telcos stop this auto data roam practice.

very sad case... i was being charged for that amount.. after reported to ocs.. and now waiting approval from celcom to get it waived.. now expecting a call from celcom on this..

while waiting for that.. i outstation again and received the same sms of the amount of being charged.. nothing can do till the statement is out then only can make report again.. really wasting time!

Actually if the telcos really did not thought of anything to gain from the customers, they can always set an allowance of say first 5-10KB of roaming data used will be waived.

I believe some phones might still be pinging a certain server before it realizes that data roaming setting is off which is why there will be several hundred bytes of data used which is really very small and it is obvious the customer did not use the data. What activity uses less than 1KB these days? hmm.gif

nowadays, everytime i go abroad to move my sim into a 2g dummy phone. this has proven to reliably prevent data roaming and at the same time retain voice and sms functionality.

good luck!

Despite Maxis' revised plans, still loving the FIRST Basic 38. Low commitment at RM38 monthly for 3GB and when needed can Max Up 5GB for RM50 making it RM88 for 8GB of data. Highly flexible plan. biggrin.gif
