Guys, i'm seriously considering going for a GPS device... Which are the recommended models for someone on a shoestring budget (i.e. below RM2k)?

Also, i know there is a shop selling only GPS products at Digital Mall... If i'm not wrong, it's located on the GF (outside the building, near KFC) and opposite that kopitiam place... Any1 bought their stuff there before or not?

Get Garmin Nuvi 200.

Entry level GPS device at around RM 1,200 only. smile.gif
*
Where is it sold? I went to the Garmin dealer in Digital Mall (Geopac Sdn. Bhd.) and they showed me the Nuvi 200W which is going for around M$1900... It is much more expensive when compared with the entry-level Nuvi 200, thats for sure...

However, the device functions quite well when i did the simulation in Penang (i'm going there for hols next month actually!)... It managed to give a reasonably accurate guide on how to get to Gurney Plaza from, say, the Bridge... Still, i plan to check out the 200 mainly due to price difference... Where to get it ya? KLCC / Lowyat / Digital / etc.?

Yups, but due to budget constraints, i did not really go about my pursuit for the GPS... Now, its a different story... I've been travelling out of town more often (mainly for holidays! biggrin.gif) and seems to me that a GPS will really come in handy for this...

Well, bro stimix, that unit u mentioned is really affordable... But where can i check it out for a "test-drive"?

U can check wth the GPS shop that I recommended mths bck at Digital Mall S14. They hv expanded and having another bigger shop just beside the entrance. Look for Kelvin.

That means it;s the same one i mentioned earlier... Is it GeoPac Sdn. Bhd., btw? I was speaking to a chap by the name of Edmond Hee the other day actually... Where is the "parent" outlet, the original one, located?

If u dun like them, u can also check from others such as the one in Seremban (The cheapest)or lelong.com or ucan check more in malsingmaps' vendors corner...I also noted that the sole distributor of Garmin product in M'sia hv changed.. hmm.gif

Yups, i have to agree that the dealer in Seremban is indeed cheap (what's the name, btw?)... Too bad they're in S'ban, which is not too convenient though... Any1 here in LowYat selling GPS at the Garage Sales corner, btw?

i just went to test drive NUVI200 in my friend's shop he quoted me around rm1100. very nice. maybe we can round up a few more people to squeeze more discount out of him.
*
Bro, where's your friend's shop? That's quite a nice price for that entry-level GPS device... I'm hoping to get it before early November (if things go right), as i'll be leaving for a 3-day break in Penang during the 2nd-weekend of that month actually... biggrin.gif

No no no... I didn't mean that the POI's were incomplete. But I used it mostly to find petrol stations. All the makan places, my gf knows by heart ady wan.

How to tell if ur a gadget freak? Ur gf complains that she should be ur one and only GPS.  wacko.gif

mine really does. biggrin.gif
*
Hahaha, u are exactly the opposite of me... My gf depends on me as a GPS when we're traveling, whether overseas or domestic! laugh.gif

Which is why i want to get that GPS, as it's far more dependable than ol' me... And yeah, it'll definitely be an excellent help in locating gasoline stations or even R&R areas (for toilet mah! biggrin.gif)...

Cool, then i guess the Nuvi 200 is the best one for an entry-level beginner like myself then... Since its the most affordable and (hopefully) easiest to use... biggrin.gif

Not beginner lah... The only thing nuvi series don't have tracking capabilities.

Bro, tracking in what sense? Meaning real-time updates? Now a bit blur here... blush.gif

Wah, if some of those GPS-enabled cellphones sux, then might as well get the stand-alone devices... There are many dealers selling, for instance, Garmin products nowadays, which brings about a wider variety of GPS devices in the market...

hello all the sifu's here.. i wanna ask how much the nuvi200 cost and where to get the best deal in kl and klang valley? and one more question... previous reply i read you all say we use US satellite to find our location using GPSr or device like nuvi200 free of charge at the moment rite? is there any possibility that the US government gonna charge us for using their satellite in the near future?
*
Bro, u asked exactly the same question i've been trying to find out all this while! biggrin.gif

And yes, i guess the Nuvi 200 is the cheapest GPS device in the market today... Its very suitable for newbies into the GPS world, like myself... Also, speaking of the satellite, i thought we don't just use the American ones... The European satellites are also connected to the network ya?

Well, i've officially joined the GPS Club with the purchase of the Nuvi 310 yesterday... Its very user-friendly and the response time is accurate... Helps a lot in my travels, whether around town or outstatin...

Btw, what do u guys think of the 310, from experience? I was initially considering the 200 but after testing both units (200 and 310) together with the seller while driving, the 200 was unable to detect the satellites (due to vCool in the car)... However, the 310 could receive the signals clearly, mainly due to the external antenna...

Thats y i ended up going for the slightly higher=end version... biggrin.gif

Haha..u really too long under the coconut hell  biggrin.gif  Sure GPS works well in Malaysia infact since early 2000 but the maps at the point of time really sxxks..Rigt now, the maps both commercial & hobbyist's malsingmaps site (as per my siggy) are very detail even if u are at remote areas or even up to Gunung Berinchang in Cameron Highland or navigating to a hotel in Pantai Cenang in Langkawi!  biggrin.gif

Yeah, that i have to agree with u, fellow GPS bro... I can even drive to the Hotel River Garden in Kemaman, Terengganu (mum's hometown actually smile.gif) from SS2 and following the instructions of my nuvi 310... GPS in Malaysia has certainly grown by leaps and bounds since the infant-days in early 2000...

And bro, when will they introduce the FM Traffic Update service here in Bolehland? Those lucky Yanks and Brits, as well as French, have this service already... Its about time someone comes up with this handy tool for GPS users in MY and SG! thumbup.gif

soooo basically this RM300++ thingy helps u find directions only??? no other advantages besides dat???? @_@ i thought can detect speed traps pula....

*edited* ohhh n wanna ask how often r the maps updated??? u know lar... M'sia roads alwaz changing... sooo ma fan...
*
Well, it helps when you're in somewhere unfamiliar and want to do things like, say, getting food, searching for accommodation, or even withdrawing money... My nuvi 310 has an extensive database for these things and other stuff like car parks, community facilities, or a specific road, courtesy of the numero uno Malsingmaps.com!

As for speed trap detection, this one should require an FM service subscription, if i'm not wrong... Unfortunately, such a service is not (yet) available here in MY or SG but it's common in parts of Europe, the UK, and USofA...

Yups, like what SoloNg said, u need to get your unit locked on to a minimum number of satellites before the SatNav is able to detect your current location...

I'm not sure about O2 but for a Garmin Nuvi 310, the optimal number is four satellites for reasonable locality detection...

Speaking of accuracy, even the vKool (or whatever other tinting) plays a part... It's much harder to connect to satellites when the SatNav is inside my car, as compared with outdoors, as the signals are "filtered" when trying to reach the GPS in the car...

There is some GPS use put their BT GPS outside their car to get better signal. Or you can hook ot out with the external antenna
*
Hmmm, how is this done?

Mine is actually enabled with BT, but the antenna is a short and stumpy block on top of the unit (its a Garmin nuvi 310, btw)... Like i mentioned in my earlier post, i have to wait outside the car for the SatNav to track the satellites and acquire at least five, before placing the unit on the vehicle mount... Very ma-fan, especially when it's raining heavily or in a basement parking garage!
