Hi everyone. I am new in Lowyat forum (I forgot my account username and password in 2009).

Would anyone be interested in forming a EFFECTIVE STUDY GROUP for CFA? I would be registering for CFA (LEVEL 1) December 2012 exam. And I will be having weekend lessons with Kasturi-Sunway for their May 2012 intake.

Waiting for your replies!!

i completely agree with what fino has said.

The text books actually tells alot of stuffs not required to PASS the exam.. but they train the way you think and not to see things on surface level, and also how to become an unbiased analyst. Some personally enjoy the things in the text books. I find it quite difficult to remember stuffs from the text books although the concept is simple.

I find schweser notes quite effective. I gave up the text books after reading 2 of them simply because I'm the type that will read and try to understand every line. It is practically impossible to finish it on my pace. I will read the books to improve my knowledge after the exam (now i'm just concentrating on passing) and by that time I should already understand the basics and the reading materials from the text books should come easy and I don't have to memorize the concept.

I bet you one Starbucks Venti drink that you won't read your L1 textbooks anymore after your exam.

Hahahaha... Make sure all of you have your passport and it is still valid on the exam day

anyway.. My name have small capital letters as i've mentioned earlier and i've written to CFA and ask. They said it would not impact as long as the name matches the one in my passport. Capital letters or small letters does not matter.

I'm gonna print that email out in case they don't let me in

After exams, once you've read THE WHOLE stack of books, you let me know and we'll meet at KLCC or Pavilion. Starbucks on me.

Regarding your name, solve it before you qualify for the chartership, else the name printed on your certificate will also be in small caps.

To win the war, know thy examiner. His train of thoughts is all peppered in his questions over the years. The key my dear padawan, is to create a database of past years questions (minimally going back most recent 5yrs.. best is 10yrs to have statistical validity) to identify topics which has higher weight. MS Excel will do fine. Collaborative efforts may shorten time.. but by doing this yourself, you will have a better feel of the questions as there may be some questions which the division of points between subjects is arguable.

Colums lay all the topisc in the syllabus. Rows lay the time series. Data is the marks allocated. Then is up to you to sort high/low or create a pivot table. I find this exercise quite helpful even when I want to just target a topic, I can goto each questions in multiple years.. and see how has the questions been permutated or linked to other areas.. after all.. long questions is "ROJAK" you gotta pull bits and pieces from diverse subjects.

Input alone (read and store in grey matter) is not sufficient to aid speed of recall. I prefer Output-input method. At least I can take a first stab with "what I know" and go assess what is the recommended solution. Therefore I may assess my gap. Note that it is important to be totally and brutally honest to yourself, if you missed/error, just admit that you need to improve.

Is hackable.. but takes effort and time and honesty smile.gif Can you "brain" IT?

your method seems to yield great results. however, the time cost of collecting data and putting it into excel seems to be too much. using the same amount of time,

1) I might be able to finish studying.
2) also, past data does not reflect future data. the examiner might change his questions, or the examiner itself might change.

but if u would teach me how to do it, I am willing to learn. YEAH!!! just learning something new!

Getting all subjects above 70% is easy. Just be discipline and study as early as possible with the final 1 month or 2 weeks focusing on practice exam.

And also focus more on Alternative Investments. Why? Because it have the least questions. Just a few wrong questions and you can kissed your 70% goodbye.

I'm preparing for Lvl1 June 2012 exams... Its so near. Any tips to improve my knowledge?

Before this I've studied the textbooks (but skipped those parts that I remember studying from my degree). I've been practising questions from the schweser question bank for the past month. Besides from practising the questions, any more suggestions?

You seem to be doing quite ok at the moment. One more thing you can do is try out the mock exam from the CFA Institute. It's free and you can see where you stand in the exam.

I've a question.

In interest rate parity, a domestic currency will depreciate relative to the foreign currency when the domestic interest rate is higher.

But in macroeconomics terms, a currency will actually appreciate when it raises its interest rate.

Can anyone help me to explain this contradiction? Thanks.

Really? But I seems to have problem memorizing those small details like SEC Filing stuff and those regulation stuff. That's my main concern.

Yeah. I'm going to do mock exams after I finish some more of the question bank.

Thanks anyway biggrin.gif

I just wonder something.

A person can get CFA after completing a bachelor. After the person get CFA qualification, can that person straight away get DBA or PhD without getting any masters or MBA?
