Thailand to Upgrade Fleet, Chooses Chinese to Provide Three Submarines

user posted image

Three Chinese-made submarines worth 355 million dollars each may be purchased by Thailand for its Royal Navy, the newspaper Bangkok Post reported on Friday, citing a source in the country's procurement committee.

The decision was made on Thursday, when the majority of the 17-strong committee said "yes" to the Chinese submarines, saying that it was the "best value for money". Other committee members remained split between offers from South Korea and Germany.

According to the source, the committee voted to buy the Chinese submarines because they are "equipped with superior weaponry and technology and are also able to stay underwater longer."

In July 2014, the Royal Thai Navy inaugurated a state-of-the-art submarine squadron headquarters and training center for this squadron, even though the navy has had no submarines in its fleet since 1951.

The squadron's facilities, which include a German submarine simulator, were established at an existing naval base in Sattahip, east of Bangkok in the Gulf of Thailand.

The submarine project has been repeatedly supported by Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Prawit Wongsuwon, who pointed to the country's ever-increasing territorial challenges and maritime missions.

Earlier, the Thai government allocated almost 6 million dollars for the navy dealing with the feasibility of purchasing submarines from Germany, South Korea or China.

China Builds Top Secret Midget Submarine

user posted image

The space snapshots captured by DigitalGlobe show the vessel berthed at the shipyard pier used for fitting out submarines. The midget submarine had left the pontoon by late November and by mid-January 2015, another submarine, probably a Type 041 Yuan-class boat, occupied the pier.

According to imagery measurements, the midget submarine has an approximate length of 35 meters and beam of 4 meters, which suggests a surface displacement around 400-500 tons.

The 127th Ordinance Institute, of the Central Northern University, China, handed over a new 125mm cannon to People's Liberation Army officers at a June 10, 2015 ceremony.

Midget submarines – sometimes called mini or coastal subs – typically weigh below 150 tons and are operated by small teams. Their small size limits their endurance, often forcing them to operate alongside a mother ship.

In the past, the vessels been used for harbour penetration, concealed attacks on individual ships, or for reconnaissance purposes. Most of today's midget subs – from North Korea and Iran – are regularly armed with torpedoes and mines.

As Chris Biggers points out at open-source intelligence website Bellingcat, media outlets have reported on China fielding midget submarines, but no reports exist suggesting China is currently building such a vessel. The boat could be for a foreign customer, Biggers notes.

The Wuchang shipyard is at the forefront of conventional submarine production in China. It is best known for building China's novel Type 032 Qing class vessels, which is the world's largest conventional submarine.

Butterworth base is already been planned for a land-swap redevelopment, new air base is planned at Ara kuda

The journalist probably never heard of planespotters, any pictures taken outside the base looking into the base or the planes in it is not against the law (more like there's no law for it) and these guys can literally camp just outside the security fence

The problem with butterworth is that its an old legacy ww2 british airbase and any expansion is out of the question, so the air force have planned it to move to new location in few years time
*
hard to said Ara kuda, the Kedah proposal Kulim International Airport (KIA) location very near to Ara Kuda 5-6km airspace direct, if both built easy disturb each other operation.
i always think Twin runway KIA can design combine dual propose Military/civilian airport. and move abit closer to Penang.

For lumut base,BNS already take 50% of base space, look like both share the base. if me i will move BNS to opposite place (Tanjung Batu), make more bigger close shipyard capability to construction 6000 tons class navy ship. after move out BNS, not problem to park 2-3 unit 13k-20k tons LPD and other
well if navy/Airforce base close to or in city this kind of think will happen, we can't stop/restrict city development which bring economy, means budget military development too, one day it will come, also hard for local/state/fed Gov stop city development. it also happen in many country。
only way to do is move base out from city and restrict development at new area。

Actually very ridiculous that private homes are right at the doorstep of a military base.

There should have been a safety buffer radius for the airbase.

do you think local gov will take initiative to not approval those house project neaby Airbase?
They/property already think to kick out airbase and take the land。
still Butterworth AB already too close to City。offcouse 50 years ago,no house here。

South Korea is expected to announce the winner of their tanker competition Tuesday at a session of the National Defense Acquisition Program Committee meeting. The competition is to acquire four tanker aircraft and is between the KC-46, A330MRTT, and the B767MMTT.

It's believed to be a neck and neck competition between the KC-46 and A330.

S.Korea picks Airbus to supply 4 in-flight refuelling tankers rclxms.gif rclxms.gif
SEOUL, JUNE 30

South Korea said on Tuesday it chose Airbus Group SE to supply four in-flight refuelling tankers, which two people with knowledge of the matter said was for a tender worth around 1.2 trillion won ($1.07 billion).

Airbus' A330 MRTT beat Boeing Co's KC-46A and Israel Aerospace Industries' MMTT for the tender, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration said in a statement.

The people declined to be identified as they were not authorised to discuss terms with media.

i hope military plane not use too old, 40 year max, de TNI C130 crash already 51 year use....
same to RMAF C130 already 45 year.
altough getting 4 unit A400M, still no enough to replace all C130. should get 2-4 more. than combine with more few CN235. than retire all C130H
i think TNI or Indo Gov will get new Airlift ASAP after this accident to get back the image.

Yes if we are only looking for only a tactical airlift replacement of the C130s then will be the C-130J also C-27J, C-295, now add new model KC-390, AN-178

However over the year ATM can't move our some strategic hardware or large item during logistic requirement or operation , also long and far place on UN mission, so we need to add some strategic airlifters capability and long range, so only have A400M and C17 in market, Russia IL76 is out off question.
also we already bough CN235, getting new C130J look like redundant.

instead of that we should be looking for longer range tanker compared to our current KC130

like 2 330 MRTT

agree .....
a lease no need to rent MAS/AA plane already.
but just no hope on that...
anyway our A400M will fit refueling module later. which able to provide 3-4 time refuelling for Su-30 or 5-6 time for F18.

Test Pilot Admits the F-35 Can’t Dogfight: New Stealth Fighter Is Dead Meat In An Air Battle
(Source: War is Boring blog; posted June 29, 2015)
A test pilot has some very, very bad news about the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The pricey new stealth jet can’t turn or climb fast enough to hit an enemy plane during a dogfight or to dodge the enemy’s own gunfire, the pilot reported following a day of mock air battles back in January.

“The F-35 was at a distinct energy disadvantage,” the unnamed pilot wrote in a scathing five-page brief that War Is Boring has obtained. The brief is unclassified but is labeled “for official use only.”

The test pilot’s report is the latest evidence of fundamental problems with the design
of the F-35 — which, at a total program cost of more than a trillion dollars, is history’s most expensive weapon.

The U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps — not to mention the air forces and navies of more than a dozen U.S. allies — are counting on the Lockheed Martin-made JSF to replace many if not most of their current fighter jets.

And that means that, within a few decades, American and allied aviators will fly into battle in an inferior fighter — one that could get them killed … and cost the United States control of the air.

The fateful test took place on Jan. 14, 2015, apparently within the Sea Test Range over the Pacific Ocean near Edwards Air Force Base in California. The single-seat F-35A with the designation “AF-02” — one of the older JSFs in the Air Force — took off alongside a two-seat F-16D Block 40, one of the types of planes the F-35 is supposed to replace. (end of excerpt)

base on my recent study, surprising cost marine diesel one of major cost for RMN getting LPD, a 10,000 tons ship usually have 1000 tons marine diesel oil. it cost about usd 620,000 (usd 600 per-ton) , about RM2 million to refuel. if 10 month operation refuel once a month, it will cost 20 million marine diesel. not include other like hydraulic oil and other. hmm.gif
