Uh? If you set up the uefi installation environments properly (bios, w8.x installer, gpt disk) this screen will never appear.

Wait are you using w7 installer? w7 needs additional file tweaks on your usb, and it must be w7 sp1 or above for uefi install.

all working properly now, thanks alot to you bro! 1 question though, right now still on stock win 8, now downloading the win 8.1 update from the windows store, when i'll upgrade to win 10 should be just fine right? or need to redo the whole ssd caching thing?

i'm using bootable usb, created the same way for all my desktop and laptop computers that run uefi bios. never had any issue hehe (assuming the bios is set up correctly, that dialog is mainly due to incompatibility between the installer and disk type. if the usb is formatted with fat32 and it was booted as EFI entry in boot selection menu, then it's the disk that is incompatible (still mbr disk type; which should have been taken care of with diskpart > clean before install).

well as long as it worked for you with stock os dvd then great smile.gif

it should be ok without ssd caching when performing upgrades. actually you can create w8.1 install media and use that instead to do a fresh w8.1 install. (skipping w8 to 8.1 upgrade) you can download the correct windows version from ms, http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows...t-refresh-media (make an iso when you are given the option, so that you can keep a copy in storage) i think the correct windows version is windows 8.1 core x64. use slmgr /dlv at administrative prompt to confirm.

ssd caching is sofware-based, so you can set it up anytime you want.

If you have chance to reformat, try to "die die also use USB". Coz format using DVD really very very slow.
USB is a lot more faster. Hehe...

If you able to format using USB, you are consider a "level up" rclxms.gif

The SSD caching is done by the Intel software. is not related to windows.

lol! ya, die die also use usb. w10 retail packs also have usb version dy haha

right, there are plenty of advantages and things you can do with bootable usb. it has better speed, never had disk error issues, and you can make changes on the fly to fit your needs. if you're like me who integrate windows updates into install.wim before install (to save time for downloading updates every time i do fresh installs), you can replace stock install.wim with new ones. if install.wim is too large to fit (fat32 has 4gb file size limit), you still can split it into 4gb per piece and combine them when you do the install, using dism. (normally for the same windows version, i just format the os partition, use dism to dump windows files from .wim into it. that's how windows is installed anyway)

as long as the current os is activated and connected to internet before and during upgrade, yes.

the first thing to do after upgrade is to install compatible intel chipset, rst, me, and gpu drivers. that solved a number of incompatible drivers downloaded from windows updates.

990m is like a mobile version of GTX980.
TDP is 165watt which is higher than MXM card can support.
I think it will only come out with BGA version.

yeah. maybe it's time to move on. however, it will be a hot card. (i need to play with the fan profiles for my desktop 980 sli previously to get a good temperature) i wonder how laptops with this monster handle the heat.

well, as along as i can still swap my cpu in my laptop, i'm good. gpu is not my priority anymore for laptops. i will either go for a sli setup for my current desktop card, or maybe just get the next best thing in near future if necessary.

Dota 2 still the most famous game by now although I didn't play it. biggrin.gif

you still need one if you wanna have just a laptop for everything, including gaming, with settings at high or above. if you're ok with gaming at 1080p, it's great. at 3k it's still ok, depending on games and settings. if you go beyond that, then no.

dota 2 is not demanding in terms of gpu power.

Yup, that's why I said we might not need that kind of power in future...
Game developer will focus more on game play instead. tongue.gif

Yes. It's not near future but it's coming. There will be one day when all we need is a a display, keyboard, mouse, controller, and a good internet connection. Everything else is processed in cloud and dump to the display.

haha maybe 980m is the last of its kind (mxm), considering 990m's power requirement is much higher than what mxm slot can supply, based on its specification.

ALERT!
Windows 10 + Official 353.62 Drivers are Killing Samsung and LG Notebook LCD Display Panels

http://en.community.dell.com/owners-club/a...3746/t/19645191
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/86...g-lcd-displays/
http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/wi...-owners.779449/

maybe this was the real reason behind why many of us still failed to get a pass on w10 upgrade validation. Sony has issued a warning to its users to wait for confirmed driver support from them first (expected to be available in September or October 2015)

edit: i think i am lucky. i run w10 uefi mode in aw18; and i don't use geforce experience.

oh my

not jumping to conclusions but I'm having similar issue (no display after Win10 upgrade) but my case is different;
- I have a X51, not Alienware laptops
- I'm running on Radeon R9 270, not GeForce
- My display is a Dell, not Samsung or LG
- it was running fine for a few days (not in a matter of hours) before the issue occurred

coincidence? hmm.gif

I've posted regarding the issue I'm having in the previous page of this thread and as far as my troubleshooting effort goes, I still couldn't figure out what's wrong. at first I thought my display gone kaput but recently I've plugged it to the HDMI port of a Astro decoder and it somehow works. now I'm left with the "my GPU is dead" option but due to current life schedule and very limited resource I couldn't do much to check

now I'm considering to test out the DVI port (in any case the HDMI port was faulty) or buy/borrow a cheap used PCIe graphics card to check out if my rig is still ok :'(

first thing first, when you connected your monitor to your computer, did you play with the display-out button on your monitor to check if the correct output was selected? because previously when i switched cables (from hdmi to minidp), the monitor (i use dell monitor too; forgot which model hehe) didn't switch output mode automatically iinm, so i had to set it up with one of the buttons on it.

when you tested with intel igpu, did you check if the onboard graphics was enabled in bios? (or selected as primary i don't remember sorry)

we need to have this confirmed first, because for the rest of it, we need a working monitor to do stuff.

1. if you can see a mouse cursor when you move your mouse - http://www.tenforums.com/general-discussio...ack-screen.html
2. driver issue - http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/windows-10-how-fi...upgrade-1514481 , https://community.amd.com/thread/184727

edit: btw for alienware systems it's better to check out and use w10 drivers released at dell's support page.
