Some people harp on having 1 Gbps port for streaming boxes which I can't understand the actual need for it... Hope to get the answers đŸ˜’

Some streaming box do have built-in smb server or allow certain app to run as smb server. Just attach any usb storage device to the usb port, you'll get simple network attached storage (NAS).

For example, nvidia shield do have built-in smbv3 server, that allow any usb external storage that is connected to the usb port, to be accessible by any device within the same local network via wired/wireless. So in this case 1Gbps lan is really useful to speed up the transfer time compare to 100Mbps, especially when you're transfering huge files from it and vice-versa.

However, if you just use the streaming box only for streaming purposes, 100Mbps is more than enough even to stream 4k video. Infact, netflix only recommend 25Mbps for their UHD content smile.gif

Just use your router as a DLNA, UPnP and HTTP/S Media Server through Samba or NFS (Merlin FW have options for NFS). Many ASUS routers have higher speed USB 3.0 or 3.1. Also can use router as a torrent client.

Yeah agree, this will work too as long as your router have usb port and the firmware support the feature

Ok, why would one want to transfer such big files via the streaming boxes instead of directly connecting the external device to the NAS?

I do understand one may want to access certain media in NAS but for media files, would the quality be affected if the LAN port is Mbps?

Don't get me wrong, streaming offline media content from NAS via 100Mbps lan should be fine and the quality shouldn't be affected.

My scenario was, my 8TB drive(with external enclosure) was originally empty and I plan to use it to backup my media (movies, tv show, music, etc) from my pc, as well as to set it up as backup destination for my pc, laptop and phone's important files.

So to make it easy, I just plug the external drive to the streaming box and set it up as a NAS and transfer all of my terabytes of files to it, here the 1Gbps lan is helpful to speed up the transfer.

I see. I guessed this most people that doesn't not do what you. Instead the streaming box will access dedicated NAS to access in particular streaming media

Hi all Mi Box users..

Wanna ask, is it worth to buy Mi Box if I only use ZTE 4G/LTE router at my home? I mean the internet used is Maxis mobile 60gb / month.

Tried to do the speedtest average speed is 7mbps DL & 5mbps UP.

Need advise from experts.. Thank you in advance, cheers!

That download speed is not the problem under normal uses. Can stream hi res no issue.

Your quota might be though. Once quota finish I don't know how bad it will be throttled

Thank you for the responses..

Ya I thought so too about the quota.. once finished, have to wait for a full month cycle for the data to get refreshed wacko.gif

Maybe I can borrow/rent the box from my friend first to test for a month & see how it goes.

Anyway, thanks for feedback guys.

You might wanna look into some of those unlimited vpn service for once your quota full.
Either you’re using netflix/amazon prime or kodi with venom addons. The hd streams are gonna suck your quota a lot

Anyone using Mi Stick instead?

1. I believe it does not require HDMI cable as the stick is plug to HDMI port direct

2. How about the power source? USB C? And is the power plug included or only cable and need to source the 'charger' ourselves?

3. And how was it compared to Mi Box? I need one for Youtube and I saw it supports media casting as well which is a plus
