Hei! Just happened come through this post. Although is old post. But I have to say... Just ignore those has limited knowledge in IT and not into digital things but likes to watch digital created films, ironman, star track, Harry Potter... Haha.

Light - Smart control CAN DO some much more then just On or Off the light. Can those people change their light build colour? No. U can't. Haha. I can use phone change my lightbulk colour anytime when change mood from reading to watch Tv, after dinner then drink at balcony. Change or dim the colour to Yellow, blue, white, rainbow Just to match the mood. And also a basic function - auto lights on timer. When Long go or before night fall.

Plugs - if they think smart control only Can do lighting then Wrong again. You can control power on or off on switch. Don't worry forget to turn off the iron or don't need to wait or heat up. Can on before u go to downstairs. Also I set everyday 8am my coffee machine auto boil. My Aircon is on, before I arrived home.

Audio - play music on my ceiling speaker from phone. smile.gif I don't have to turn on my computer before I go shower or shit. phone always follow us. Come back home from work, Just put the phone on table and music auto play. People... Pls don't ask Why? Still need touch the screen? NO, there is a chips call NFC. (Apple call Apple Pay) the function can do so many things. Like our IC can also use like touchNgo, like a USB pen drive in flat paper shape. Just use app to store function in the sticker then stick in car or meeting room or home. When a phone put on top, it wil tells the phone auto silent mode. Or auto turn to speaker mode in car. Or auto show map traffic. Or auto play music.

Doorlock - can't believe still have people say. Worry no battery. Want to ask them, ur phone no battery then how ah? Worry ur car no battery then don't drive? Is not something to worry. Because it alway gives you warning before it totally gone. Otherwise do you think Hotel still use key?! I also using the Samsung doorlock you have smile.gif. I don't worry my family forget to bring key. (For sure everyone kena this before) because it can use password to key in. Or, call anyone in the family, we can unlock the door for him. Especially new year time. My aunt arrive time always different from promised time. So always open the door for them first. And some friend come to party also. (True-I can work with it for remote control. But I have ODC, need everything same brand or same colour. So I still planing to get a smarthing hub. Malaysia not sure can use or not if want to remote control, just worry IP block , although shouldn't be a problem it using Amazon's gate.)

TV - nothing to say. May be those non-technology dude still using USB plug in Hardisk watch something. I don't understand why they have a smart phone, smart LED tv But doing those non-smart action? Perhaps they only "half-smart" or lazy to understand what they can do more. Like driving a F1 car in 40kmhz road. Wasted. They can use phone mirror play things to the tv. Or they can connect the tv to a network drive. I can use phone click what things I want to download, let the network drive download when I go work and no one is home. When I come back. I can sit and play the video on tv.

Wow really impressive automation you guys are doing here. Forgive me for being a giant noob...
May I know if most ppl DIY or is there a contractor who specializes in all these including doing plaster ceiling, normal reno works.

Which brand of ceiling speaker do you recommend? What system & NFC chip are you using to manage it?

I want to do most of what you have done for my new home, hopefully can get some tips from you.
Thanks in advance josqi!!!

Recently I bought few home automation "things" from US and China, having fun with it for a week, and I felt it is pretty powerful and can do almost any automation that you want

Things that I bought are

Samsung Smartthings hub V2 - z-wave and zigbee controller, it is open platform, compatible with many z-wave and zigbee devices, even the device is not in the support list, you can add custom device handlers to manage it. there are many developers out there to publish 3rd party z-wave device handlers, such as custom yamaha receiver device handler, custom smartapps integration to kodi to control kudled color bulb.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Kudled Color bulb (Taobao) - Zigbee color bulb, similar to Philips Hue, it is much much cheaper, only one quarter of Philips Hue price! thanks for the smartthings community, I'm able to pair this with smartthings hub directly and able to control the bulb from smartthings app
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Monoprice z-wave in wall on/off switch - the cheaper z-wave on/off switch, you can use it as a relay or light switch, I use it as light switch and also a relay act as momentary switch to open/close autogate, the momentary switch connected to my autogate panel, the blue and red wires are connected to a z-wave switch relay, so I wired these two to the autogate door trigger, and it works perfectly, I set up a routine that when I'm arriving home, the gate will automatically open, and turn on the kudled lights installed at the gate.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

GoControl Z-wave motion sensor and door/windows sensor - these security things can be used for wireless alarm, I use it for my second alarm system, the door sensor has external input that I connect it to the magnet contact installed on the autogate, this enables to monitor the autogate status to see whether or not it is close (I often forgot to close it). With the motion sensor installed, it is able to detect any intruder and take actions such as turn on all Kudled lights and set color to RED, since I have two Kudled color bulbs installed as the gate light, it is easier for outsider to notice my house is in the alarm state!
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Below is the low quality video to demonstrate the smartthings integration with kudled color bulb

Hey Kiding,

I've been reading your post around the forum and see that you have used home automation products from US. I am currently planning to move back to MY from US and would like to bring back some HA products. I was wondering do you know if the Philips Hue light bulbs bought from US would work in 220v? And are there any problems using the sensors?

Thanks!

I don't think Philips Hue sold in US can be used in Malaysia as it is 110V, if you plug in to 220V socket, it could burst!

You can bring back those battery powered smartthings compatible z-wave or zigbee sensors, it will work in Malaysia.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah the bulbs are rated 110v, but i've read alot of reviews saying it works in 220V lol.

How about connected door locks and ring doorbell? Both are battery powered, so i guess they should work too?

ok at first i wasnt too warm to this home automation thing mainly because its too darn expensive just to turn on/off a light or two.

but lately there are some interesting products popping out that makes me reconsider.

now apple is adding Homekit with Siri voice control to certain devices that is compatible with Homekit. Good example is the Philips Hue. Still it cost about Rm1k just for a three bulb starter pack.

then Amazon is coming out with the second gen Amazon Echo Dot (see video) which is only US$50. Its like a standalone Siri. And it is compatible with many standards. I can add smart plugs from TP-Link Smartplug and D-link Smartplug (about Rm150 each).

Now if I can find a hub/control for my ceiling lights.....that would complete the setup that I need.

I dont need to control temperature (maybe just monitoring), I cant afford to motorize my roller blinds, I dont have an alarm system, I got one IP cam and might add another. I dont need auto make coffee. So basically I just want to control my lights. Thats the biggest thing.

Now Im using mechanical timers to turn on/off lights. If the times and date can be set electronically using Smartplugs with an app, that would be great. Can dim as well. Change colors if you got RGB bulbs

Any more ideas ozak and weikee?

Okay Echo Dot may not work (100%) outside USA or UK. You can still use voice to control your devices but anything to do with location and time/date, it wont work

I still need to sturdy how it going to intergrate into our basic wiring control in the house.

This echo run on wifi. So it is easy to setup. But the device that going to be control is not easy to setup. Specially already in your home. How to going to integrate into it.

Not the price that turn me off from buying such call "home automation". What turn off me is, it is not Automation at all. It is just some fancy gadget that make you feel cool. It even can't replace us to switch ON/OFF the light in easy way. (Not this echo la)

So what's problem you're facing to turn on/off the light ? biggrin.gif

Don't tell me you going to rewiring your room/hall light, pull the wire out from the switch, put a 3pin plug and plug into this smartplug and plug into the wall socket ?

How many kind of light in your home that run on wall socket ? Table lamp?

But I still cannot figure it out what I can do with this smartplug.

Than this TP-link and dlink plug doesn't state any power consumption that it run. Later makan my energy more than my light. sweat.gif

There are many light wall switches can be installed directly without changing your home electrical wiring. Previously most of the smart switch need neutral wiring. The problem is these product might not support homekit

Echo + smartplug probably RM300+ ?

Have you often use SIRI ? Easy use or not?

Actually I m not against Automation or whatever automation. Even you see me like negative post here.

I would be weird to myself if I against it. Macam "sot sot day" person. biggrin.gif

So does it need neutral wire or not now?

How you going to put a wifi inside the wall switch without the neutral wire?

I use Siri but not for Homekit cause I got nothing home automation
Easy to use, just simply ask

Dont worry Im also dont feel anything special about all these home automation thing. Basically just to control the lights. I am using mechanical timers now. If electronic, it can skip turning on my bedroom lights on weekends etc. Right now I set it to 5:30am and it turns on everyday at that time.

Not worry about you. tongue.gif

My job involve automation. And I design it. So I m weird if I against it. "Sot sot day" person. biggrin.gif

My only automation light is the car porch run on timer. biggrin.gif But the timer already spoil for a yrs and still haven't replace it back. Don't feel it necessary.

I have 2 more light run on wall socket. But run 7/11. So no need timer or automation.

So now you want to turn ON/OFF your bedroom light by timer and best in schedule ON/OFF ?
